Hi Jobe,

I have the same ALC 889A model as you, but I do not have 5.1 speakers though. See if selecting 5.1 Speaker under Speaker Configuration, then check the Option Speakers that you have connected. On the speakers that you have, does it have inputs for each 5.1 channel, or does it just have a 2.1 input that outputs as 5.1 to simulate surround sound?

Im not sure how to answer your question. I have Logitech X530 5.1 speakers. Each speaker runs a cable to the subwoofer, and the subwoofer runs a cable to the computer. That cable has 3 coloured jacks on it, yellow, black and pink. I checked them and they match with the coloured inputs to the motherboard. The box the speakers came in claims they are 5.1 surround sound speakers.

Just to be complete, I'll descibe what im looking at with the audio manager.

My audio manager looks just like the picture on the previous page (from ionoeng).
Speaker configuration is 5.1 speakers.
Under optional speakers I have all 3 ticked - centre, subwoofer, side pair.
Under full range speakers I have both ticked - front left and right, and surround speakers.
I do not have ticked the two lowest options-swap centre/subwoofer and enable bass management is unchecked.
The advanced settings have both upper options checked, and the small yellow folder under advanced settings, both options in there are checked.

When I click on the blue triangle to the right of the speaker configuration, it tests the 6 separate speakers.
When the 2 speakers to the side of the monitor are tested, I hear a muffled bass sound from the subwoofer, and nothing from my side speakers.
When the speaker on top of the monitor is tested, the correct speaker makes the chime sound but the sound is moderately distorted.
When the subwoofer is tested, it gives off a distorted and low pitch chime.
When I test the 2 rear speakers, my actual 2 rear speakers remain silent, and my side speakers make the same distorted chime sound.

When I play music, the music is recogniseable but very quiet or crackly. With nothing from the rear 2 speakers.

Jobe,

It sounds like it is using a 2.1 (Stereo) type of speaker connection to your sound chip/card, and only going 5.1 from the subwoofer instead. I would plug the connectors in the appropriate Front Line Out (Green), Rear (black), Center/Sub (orange) output connections on the back of the computer to the same woofer inputs, then setup the Realtek HD Audio Manager with Stereo for the speaker configuration to see how it works afterwards.

I tried a few different things with the jacks, as you suggested, and eventually got all 5 speakers to work, which was good, thanks.

Unfortunately the sound quality was poor, with the woofer overriding the sounds on the regular speakers, with some distortion. So I dug up some old 6.1 logitech speakers, and put them onto 7.1 speaker configuration and they work well.

The problem must have been with the newer 5.1 speakers, not being exactly as they promised. I might have to send them back.

Strange, did you connect it described above from the back of the computer to the same woofer inputs?

Yea I tried those jack placements, with the configuration as 5.1, and got sounds from the 5 speakers, although distorted.

When I tried the configuration as 'stereo' only 2 speakers made any sounds.

I have to admit im fairly confused by the process. In the past it seemed easier.

Anyway, all good now.

ROTFLMFAO - I just installed Vista x64 over again because of repeated BSODs that I *thought* were caused by an infection leaking out of one of my VMs and corrupting my system (turns out it was a BIOS setting I had enabled for testing purposes and forgotten about and left on).

I just checked 12 hours ago here, and since there was no update, I decided to go ahead and 'upgrade' from the standard Microsoft drivers to the R2.00.

I can't win for losing.

That's ok John. It seems Realtek is overwhelmed right now anyways. The new version downloads are listed at the site but are not downloading yet.

If I had just waited a couple of more hours.....

Although, with the frequency of releases *and* with so many people having issues (even here) I suppose I should roll back to the default M$ drivers and be happy.... :P

Hi,
I have installed the vista ultimate 32 bit version and updated the sound driver
which is realtek R2.00 but not getting the 5.1 effect, I checked in every website people say that check the option speaker fill and u'll get the sound but i dont have tht option available for me although i have selected the options for 5.1 i have checked everypart of the software but couldn't find it. So checked few websites and got the info tht its under enhancement tab but when i checked mine its not there but bass management is listed, and also noticed one thing if i select the windows sound as default and keed the input as digital input my speakers gives 5.1 if i test the windows sounds but wont work for games or movies, also if digital input is default and digital output is default then no sound at all the test sounds will work but not while playing media i think the speaker fill could be the option to solve it, but dont have the option

Can anyone please help me with this problem

Its just driving me nuts!!!

They're the same, ZIP is just archived to take up a bit less space (and thus, take less time to download).

Since neither has error recovery, a corrupted ZIP is no good to you anymore than the corrupted executable, so it's your call.

I really need to start reading the release notes to see what all has changed. I keep seeing folks with the same errors after 6 revisions....so what exactly *are* they fixing?
