Can you play sound through your Mic?

Think about it - you *record* sound through your mic (input) - not play (output) sound through the mic.

Think about it - There are two things going on here, one recording/input, you need a control for the input level and a mute and for stereo a balance control.
And # two, what do you hear? Is your mic live? do you hear it when you speek into it? If you can then there needs to be a volume control and a mute. The place for that control is in the Speaker properties, levels. Microsoft has a picture of this dialog box on their Vista support pages.
The line in/mic has always been hot. I've been plugging into it since the first sound cards. It's always been plug and play up to this point.

Hello guys. I'm hoping someone will have a solution to my problem..

I have been installing every the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver released since I built my system around a Gigabyte x38-dq6 mobo but hit a problem when I went to set up a 5.1 speaker system.

As you all know a 5.1 speaker system is made up of two front and rear speakers, together with a centre speaker and subwoofer. However, the Realtek Audio Manager setup has two side, rather than rear speakers, and there's no way the back speakers can be activated under this set-up.

Also just to clarify, I have used both Realtek and Gigabyte drivers both with the same problem. The problem doesn't occur with the drivers installed with Vista, however they have no control panel and none of the features of the Realtek/Gigabyte offer so I hope I can find a fix or I will have to continue waiting on future drivers to improve support.

Hello AntiHeroUK,

In the Realtek HD Audio Manager, look to the right side under the ANALOG Back Panel inputs image. Double click on the input used for the Rear pair speakers showing as Side pair and check the Rear Speaker Out box instead option and click OK. It will usually be one of the bottom two on the left that has Side Speaker Out checked when you double click on it.

The speakers are selected correctly over on the Analog back panel, yet at the speaker configuration area refuses to allow my rear speakers be set as rear. Here is a screenshot of what I mean.

Ummm, I thought that having front *and* rear makes your system *7.1* as opposed to 5.1...are you saying you don't have surround speakers but you do have rear speakers?

As far as I am aware having front and rear speakers makes your system 5.1, having side speakers in addition to these makes it 7.1. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers and instead of the control panel picking them up as rear speakers it think's they are side even though I have selected 5.1 speaker configuration.

In the screenshot I posted above, the audio panel recognises them as rear speakers which is fine, however to the left on speaker configuration you can see they are selected as side and the rear speakers is greyed out.

It is more than likely a driver issue which will hopefully be resolved, however I was posting to see if anyone knew of a fix.

Both speakers in the 7.1 and 5.1 are designated as surround speakers. The 7.1 makes additional use of a surround channel as side speakers, but older receivers also had a *main channel* front and rear set of speakers - that is what is disabled, rear speakers on the main channel as opposed to on the surround channel.

Under Optional Speakers on the left side, uncheck Side pair and see if it will let you afterwards. If not, while the computer is on, unplug the rear speakers from the back of the computer and plug it back in. This should give you that pop-up where you can select what the speakers should be used for.

As I understand it, will the rear out make them surround output to rear speakers or just add a second rear set of speakers on the Main sound channel?

It adds it to the surround sound output. It does not add another set of rear speakers when you select the Side output to act as the Rear output instead. It just rearranges what the output plug on the back of the computer is used for.

OK, thanks for that - then it makes more sense.

I have a very old STAV (Dolby Pro Logic!) and as it is an amp as well it has outputs for 2 sets of main channel speakers, 1 surround and 1 center.

I supposed that the soundcards work it differently then.

Brink Thank-you for taking the time to reply, however I have tried both suggestions you have made before, and I tried them again just to be sure. Still no luck.

I think my best bet is to try each new driver version and if it comes down to it I will purchase a PCI soundcard.

Your welcome AntiHeroUK. See if plugging the speakers in the Side speaker jack on the back of your computer will show as Rear since it is showing as Side when plugged into the Rear jack. It may have the setting reversed.

Tried it there now and it shows as side speakers. I've never had a problem with 5.1 on any other board, just this one and I'm hoping Realtek will have it fixed in the near future. I don't mind shelling out money on a soundcard but the audio quality of the onboard is good enough for me.

OK. For the heck of it, try the 7.1 setting and see if you can get it to work properly under that instead for the Rear speakers. Do not worry about not having the other speakers. Just leave the set you do not have (Side pair) unchecked. You may need to make the output adjustment from the posts above to.

I tried that and it works giving me the option to select rear speakers, and I deselected the side speakers. I ran the test and I receive sound from all speakers. Will I hear things like I would if the 5.1 was working correctly or will there be some difference?

I notice that speaker fill is still missing for some reason.

At least I can use all my speakers this way until the drivers are fixed. Thanks again for taking the time to help

Hello All. I am new and I was hoping to jump in here as I am having a similar issue.

I have a dell inspiron 531 with windows vista home premium. i have a realtek high def audio sound card.

recently, the audio when i play music has been malfunctioning, and the bass suddenly cuts out, leaving only a tinny, muted sound playing. i tried a different player, to no avail. this happened 4 months ago, and dell resolved the situation, although i forgot how.

we (dell and I) reinstalled the driver, and that did not work. we then system restored to yesterday before i installed the latest quicktime, but this did not work.

any suggestions? should i try reinstalling the driver again, since the system restore might have negated that?

I'm happy to hear that they are working now. Yes, they will sound just like they would in 5.1. With the Side pair speakers unchecked, the 7.1 will just skip it and act like the 5.1 instead.

Some models do not have the Speaker Fill option. My old one did, but my newer ALC889A model does not. However, it has more options than the old one did.

Mine is also the ALC889A. It seems like a decent audio chip, I just wish driver support for it on my board was slightly improved. I can't complain too much though as its working the way you suggested.
