Now what what are you going to unwrap on chrissie day? :p

Enjoy your new toy SK :)

PS Thx for the unintentional heads up on a newer GPU-Z version. (It's at 0.3.0 btw)

This is on recommended test, never thought about a basic one either.

It's just a shame 3dmark06 doesn't seem to work with SLI. Can't seem to get it working with mine. SLI works fine with 3dmark Vantage as the score just about doubles in the performance settings.

Good for you mate. They are a lovely card. I wish I could get one, but "She Who Pays The BIlls" wants a new car and thinks, erroneously, that my computer is a toy.

bear in mind this is not totally stable, i can play COD4 all day long at these settings but vantage crashes after 6mins..... always in the same spot, but no artifacts....

the fact it will game tells me im close, i recon with a little tweaking i will get it stable just below this...(if im lucky)

Hi Mitch,

They are great cards but why do you want to overclock that high when your card already has a great factory overclock, my card was factory overclocked as well but not as good as yours.

I changed my overclock to the same as your default overclock and I am very happy with it and its rock solid. I can play most of my games in native resulotion with full details on the highest settings and I still get great FPS so I couldn't ask for more.

I'm currently trying to overclock my CPU a little further, find what is the limit of my hardware. I managed to find stable setting at 3.92 GHz, but that is achieved @ 1.45 Vcore, and a multiplier lowered to 7.5 (as my RAM didn't pass the 1160MHz margin, it currently runs on close to its specifications setting - 1040MHz). I also upped the voltage of NB and also SB a little, FSB Termination voltage to 1.36 and CPU PLL voltage to 1.56. What do you think about those ? All of that is achieved at the cost of additional 4 degrees C temperature at full load, but what concerns me is that high Vcore...

HI Majkel.....;)

that vcore is concerning with a 45nm chip, as im sure your aware temps will not warn you if your chip is about to fry.....

i know many ppl who's chip simply gave up with no warning at all while pushing the threshold of their MAX vcore..:(

45nm chips affliction to a high voltage seems to be improving of late though, maybe intel is getting annoyed with constant RMA's & are putting out higher binned chips in newer batches..??

if i were you i would live with the knowledge that it will do 3.9ghz & back it off to 3.5ghz

some E8000s will happily sit @ 4ghz all day long with 1.25v (after droop) & some wont, its not worth burning it out for that magical 4ghz with that sort of voltage.. IMO

EDIT:
your NB is fine, MAX safe voltage on this is believed to be 1.65v.

that's why I wanted to know an opinion of a more experienced person, like you ;)

45nm chips affliction to a high voltage seems to be improving of late though, maybe intel is getting annoyed with constant RMA's & are putting out higher binned chips in newer batches..??

how to check from which week/batch is my CPU (preferably without having to unmount CPU cooler, as I had a hard time with mounting it...)

if i were you i would live with the knowledge that it will do 3.9ghz & back it off to 3.5ghz

yeah, it did 3.9ghz but even though orthos check didn't result in any errors the system doesn't appear to be 100% stable - my games started to crash (maybe it's because of high FSB - as to run at 3.9ghz I had to bump it up to 520mhz and lower the multiplier from 8 to 7.5 to keep the RAM speed above 1000mhz...) so I think I'll go back to where I was before. 3.73ghz was a 100% stable setting for me, though at 1.39Vcore...

some E8000s will happily sit @ 4ghz all day long with 1.25v (after droop) & some wont, its not worth burning it out for that magical 4ghz with that sort of voltage.. IMO

so my CPU is definitely not one of those which would do 4ghz @ 1.25Vcore :p but remember it's just E8200, not E8400 or E8500 ;)

your NB is fine, MAX safe voltage on this is believed to be 1.65v.

good to know, 'cause I had troubles with finding that info for my mobo :D my NB is currently running @ 1.37v :)

so, back to where I was - 3.73ghz :p in the not-so-far future I plan to buy a new CPU - another Core 2 unit, but this time I think I'll go for quad core :p maybe even for an extreme edition, as I don't want to migrate to i7 system... yet :p the prices are just to damn sky-high... for an entire system (mobo, new decent DDR3 kit, and the CPU itself)

Im also going for a quad in the not so distant future, C2D can still easily hold its own against its 4 core brothers, but as S/W advances more cores will be a real benefit...

but the E8200 is a great chip with a huge cache & runs pretty cool, my E6750 has been sitting @ 3.6ghz for 5 or 6 months, & its starting to deteriorate...

idle = 38c
load = 65c  thats right on the limit for my chip...

your batch number will be located on the retail box next to the bar code.....
when did you buy your chip, recently..??

i've seen 45nm chips holding 1.5v+ on water, so it is possible your chip still has some leg room but its not a hardy 65nm that will take a serious beating...

i know the feeling though mate......so close to 4ghz .... i know my C2D will do 4ghz but my RAM wont allow it...:( believe me though, if i was rocking pc8500s mine would be @ 4ghz all day long, & when it died i would drop a quad in....

im ready for my H/W to die, its the nature of OCing, as a result i've been through 3 RAM kits & 2 processors in about 8 - 9 months!!!

i wouldn't buy an Extreme Edition chip though, you get the EXACT same performance from a well clocked standard C2Q, the only difference is the EE will perform great at stock speeds & last a damn site longer than an OCed quad.

yes, I know that this chip is nice :p compared to the cash I gave for it and the result I got with it after OCing, it was worth it  bought it at the beggining of march this year, and since then I've been torturing it :p firstly I did a mild OC to 3.4ghz, then I went up to 3.6, and eventually ended up on 3.73ghz :p thanks to the new cooler, and also new case, I've been able to beat down the CPU load temp by over 10 degrees C per core ! speedfan shows the whole CPU idle temp is 33 degrees, but I know I should be more concerned on the core temps itself, so those ones are 41C at idle and 54C fully stressed (using my old cooler load temps flew sometimes over 66C).

I know it should be able to go higher than 3.73ghz. I wouldn't be able to go for this result without the new bios from ASUS ('cause the earlier one didn't run well with my Kingston HyperX RAM - I contacted ASUS tech support with that issue and got a sh*tty reply that this board just won't run well with that memory - if I knew that before I'd buy other motherboard, but the ASUS board SUPPOSED to run the PC8500 flawlessly, according to it's specification... finally they released a bios that allowed my memory to spread it's wings :p).

I suppose that the thing what is holding me back is the board or the CPU itself, 'cause the RAM should easily go a little above 1200mhz with voltage bumped up. currently the highest speed I got with it on memtest86+ without any errors was 1157mhz. above this value errors start to pop out like mushrooms after the rain :p before bios upgrade errors started even before I reached 1000mhz...

as for the batch/week... well, I got 6 bar codes on the retail box :p but maybe you mean the pack date (which is 02/29/08) or the BX80xxxxxx code ?

as for the CPU upgrade in the near future, I opt for the Q9550 or its faster brother Q9650 - both have 12MB cache and both should go near the 4ghz border :p

BTW, I'd like to know what exactly is the CPU PLL Voltage, and what impact it has on overclocking when bumped up above the default value. Anyone knows this ? :) And also can someone tell me what is the highest possible safe value for E8xxx C2 chip series of this option ? :)

All setups are going to react differently and no setups are the same, the only way you can find the limits of your hardware is to slowly increase your Frequencies and Voltages.

Test for Stability at each step once you find it becomes unstable try adjusting voltages a little higher and see if you can then raise your frequencies again once you found the max you should then back off a little to maintain stability. Also make sure you read this. http://www.vistax64.com/overclocking-cooling/177835-intel-overclocking-guide.html

not bad there cal.. for the VID being 1.325 on your CPU.. thats about as high as you'll get without pushing to hard.

Also the new 45nm Quads should not go above 1.3625v thats the recommended settings from intel.

I'd personally get a Q9550 E0 if anyone wants a new CPU. they WILL perform just as good as any Quad Extreme CPU and they are amazing chips. I was lucky enough to be able to get the Q9650 and I LOVE it.

BTW, I'd like to know what exactly is the CPU PLL Voltage, and what impact it has on overclocking when bumped up above the default value. Anyone knows this ? :) And also can someone tell me what is the highest possible safe value for E8xxx C2 chip series of this option ? :)

the Intel spec sheet for the E8xxx series lists the PLL Vcc default voltage as 1.50 +/- 5% (min. 1.425, max. 1.575). Normally the next available option in the BIOS is between 1.7 and 1.75v for the PLL Vcc, which is considerably over spec. <!-- / message -->

I just installed my new PCP&C 750w Silencer Quad PSU today. I've had it forever but just installed.

basically my old PSU wasn't enough for my powerful system. and at the voltage I used to fail prime95 at. this new PSU holds up and I'm now passing.

I currently have done about 30 mins of prime at 4.0 Ghz on CPU with 1.304v and 1.288v on full load. and my temps are 45 40 40 41.. not bad for air cooling at 4.0 ghz. :)

best is 4.205 Ghz as my sig says, and there is for sure MORE to come now I have better ram, and a better PSU. so you'll all be seeing results here soon.

So how are you xguntherc, nice to see you are back and still keen to overclock but I have to say that I am surprised that you still haven't beaten my 4.5Ghz not that it was ever 100% stale for me but at least you have got a good stable clock at 4.2Ghz and you have great temps for air cooling, well done mate, look forward to seeing some more results soon.

oh well you must remember that your OC is on a dual Core.. it's a little harder with a Quad my friend. but don't worry, with the new ram, and the new PSU. I'll be sure to try... even more now you challenged me to do it. I'll get er done soon.

I actually haven't went any further than I did when I first got this and hit 4.205 Ghz. I haven't even tried. was waiting for my new PSU. so now I'm ready to go. I'll post some results probably the first of next week as I have a busy week this week watching College Football bowl games. then Pro on Sunday. :)

and yea, sorry. I've been gone awhile. I've had a lot going on in life. but I'm back now. My Truck was broken into.. bastards stole everything. right in my driveway the day after Thanksgiving.. so much for giving.. these loosers TOOK.

They got my CD Player, my $400 Sub. my Amp, my 80GB ipod, 2 bluetooth headsets. my Coffee mug.. yea no ****. they stole my coffee mug. they got my sweater. they shattered the window. broke the entire Dash.. and broke the glove box open. wehn could have opened it just with the lever. got all the goods. I had a great steroe system... ALL gone now :(

VERY.... might i say again.. VERY upsetting. I wanted to hurt someone. but I ended up hurting the wall and bloody'n my hand and hurting my knuckle. lol.

Meh oh well. After the $500 deductible I'm getting about $650 from State Farm. I still haven't got the check and this happened the Friday after Turkey day.. Yup. It's taking them this long. It's been over a half a month. Pretty sad. now I'm angry I pay them $200 a month for insurance that SUCKS!.

ok I'm done ranting... Great to hear from you all, and to know I was missed. or noticed that I'm back. hahah.

Keep up on the Overclock'n guys!
