they are both GDDR3 , the only differance is the clock and memory speed , certain manufacturers wil "cherry pick" the graphics chip (core) and fit high quality memory to their board in order to be able to overclock their cards higher than stock and still remain stable.

the only part of the card thats NVidia is the core , the rest /board design/memory type/capacitor type/cooling is picked and assembled by the card manufacturer

the components cost more so the card costs more (sometimes) but they are faster , how much faster in real terms (gaming) its difficult to say

that said EVGA and XFX are both leading manufacturers so its up to you what you go for (you can always overclock a cheaper one yourself but how much it'll overclock varies board to board and components and cooling also play a major part in an OC) , research the cooling both cards use see which one is better , personally i try and stick with Gainward but thats just me

just make sure the card you choose is a 260/216 (216 processing cores) the older 260's had 192 and were much slower ingame

hope this helps , the reason i pointed you too my earlier post was just to recommend the card overall as i have one , i didnt read your post properly so i didnt realise you wanted an explanation on the memory :)

Ok thanks. I was reading on the XFX card and it has a minimum requirement of 650 watts, and I wanna stick with the ultra power supply. I did find a superclocked version made by evga and it only needs 500 watts, so I think I am going to get that one.

The 260 Core 216 is plenty, even with the 55 nm shrink. if overclocked right, it can reach speeds of a 280.

As for a power supply, you could even run a 260 Core 216 on a 400W. i ran my 9800 GTX on one with an overclocked q6600 at 3.6 ghz and it ran smoothly.

And no, GDDR3 is the same as saying DDR3 for a card. it just means Graphics Dual Data Rate Version 3. They are both the same thing.

if possible grab the 65nm GTX260....... its better than its 55nm couterpart, the die shrink was not worth having b/c of what they actually removed...

theres ppl on tech forums trying to swap 55nm 260's for 65nm ones.....:(

they shrunk the cooler (so in most cases the 55nm is hotter)

they removed the backplate (which used to cool the RAM down)

the changed the PCB from a 12 phase to an 8 phase (further lowering the card potential OCs)

it was a ''budget'' related move from Nvidia, the 65nm cards are actually built better.

i have the Black Edition ''65nm'' GTX260, & its a monster ;), XFX customer support is also excellent, my card barely breaks 300w when fully loaded.

He'll have a tough time finding one because they are replacing bigger die GPU's with the newer and smaller die GPU's. you cant even find a regular 260 or 280 on tigerdirect sometimes.

But, 12 phase to an 8 phase doesnt exactly matter because if you shrink the die as well, it does need as many phases to complete a cycle as the higher die did.

well if your getting it from XFX, then you should check the site first if they even HAVE a black edition 55nm (which im assuming they would). then check the place your buying from if it says anything about it being 55nm.

well, its not that easy to spot.....

here's the 65nm BE GTX260...

& here's the 55nm BE GTX260...

GX-139-XF_400.jpg

b/c it lacks the backplate the VRAM on the 55nm is only @ 2000mhz as apposed to 2300mhz on the 65nm card...

it will possibly list it on the box but if your buying off the net you wont have the ability to check...:(, you will struggle to find one, b/c they cost Nvidia more to produce.

Hmmm, i read on the xfx website that it needs 650 watts.
But The black edition is DDR3, while the superclocked is GDDR3. Is this a problem?

He'll have a tough time finding one because they are replacing bigger die GPU's with the newer and smaller die GPU's. you cant even find a regular 260 or 280 on tigerdirect sometimes.

But, 12 phase to an 8 phase doesnt exactly matter because if you shrink the die as well, it does need as many phases to complete a cycle as the higher die did.

i know, its i bit of a pig finding one......:(

if possible grab the 65nm GTX260....... its better than its 55nm couterpart, the die shrink was not worth having b/c of what they actually removed...

theres ppl on tech forums trying to swap 55nm 260's for 65nm ones.....:(

they shrunk the cooler (so in most cases the 55nm is hotter)

they removed the backplate (which used to cool the RAM down)

the changed the PCB from a 12 phase to an 8 phase (further lowering the card potential OCs)

it was a ''budget'' related move from Nvidia, the 65nm cards are actually built better.

i have the Black Edition ''65nm'' GTX260, & its a monster ;), XFX customer support is also excellent, my card barely breaks 300w when fully loaded.
How do I know if it is 65nm or 55nm?

well, its not that easy to spot.....

here's the 65nm BE GTX260...

b/c it lacks the backplate the VRAM on the 55nm is only @ 2000mhz as apposed to 2300mhz on the 65nm card...

it will possibly list it on the box but if your buying off the net you wont have the ability to check...:(, you will struggle to find one, b/c they cost Nvidia more to produce.

Ah Yeah. they did that 55nm for the 9800 GTX+ as well. Did they do that to every one of their 55nm parts? that cooler is alot cooler-looking than the reference.

its nearly the same, but not quite ;), if you look closely you'll see that card has no back-plate even though the cooler is the same, you can just see the edge of the PCB protruding the cooler.... it also has curved edges up by the stainless grill..

its a 55nm card....
