Free Software List for Vista

MRO has been added.

Brink you may want to check this out. One of the things I felt
was a bit awkward about MRO utility was right clicking the
tray icon and then selecting a folder... to open just one folder.

So I added "MRO Buttons" to both Faves and FavesSA launchers.
The idea being set MRO to start at Windows startup. Then if
you are running either of the Faves launcher apps, you can
import a list of all the folders in the MRO list by pressing the
button with the MRO tray icon image. That makes it easier
to open several recent folders at the same time.

The external programs just send MRO a Windows Message to execute
one of the Export commands in the popup menu. Works kind of like
a text editor. A 2nd instance of the application comes up through
the file type association mechanism, and passes the name of the
file to the first instance.. which loads it. But to the naked eye,
unless you are on a really really slow computer, it just looks like
the list pops into the ListBox.

Anyway, currently the button fails silently. Meaning if MRO is not
running(it doesn't find the MRO window) it just exits without an
error message. No big deal to add an error dialog in though.

I took the more direct approach. If the MRO Window is found the button
is enabled. Disabled otherwise.

while we're on the subject, some great free MP3 rippers that work great on vista64:

- winLAME - This has to be one of the best and most user friendly mp3 converters
- Exact Audio Copy - for converting to various formats
- CDex - another good one

An oldie but a goodie!!

works at least in my 32 bit Vista. It's very cool for doing stuff like taking a
4x3 video that has letterboxing and cropping and converting to anamorphic.
You load the file in, check your options, and an AviSynth script is produced.
This script can be used with many encoders such as QuEnc or TMPGEnc Plus.

What would some of you experts recommend for the best DVD burning program? I'd like to be able to burn some video to DVD and be able to play it in my DVD player with as little trouble as possible. So many good looking options, but hard to know which one is best. I have x64 (just found out from clicking on the "my system specs", lol)

check out ImgBurn

It claims both 32 and 64 bit Windows support plus Linux using Wine.

To do the actual conversion esp. avi to dvd check out FAVC
It has 32 and 64 bit versions. It's very cool if you have a multicore
system. You can set it to spawn a video encoder instance for each core.

Vista (or, at the very least, some versions) have built in DVD maker software - poor in terms of bells and whistles, but it works.

Hey shawn. This isnt so much a program but it is a website that offers a free program every day. Fully licensed. I dont know how they do it(they must make deals with the software companies.
All you have to do is go to the site. See what the program is for the day. If you like it, download it. Extract the setup file and others and run the setup. Once installed, open the program
On some of the programs, when you open them, they will need to be activated by you. the website will have a certificate that will pop up the the activation name(if nessecary) and the key.
Others will just license themselves.
