I need to update my graphics card. However, my computer has a smallish case, so I'm limited in which cards will physically fit in the thing. I believe that an Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT would fit in my case. So, I might beef up my PSU and go that route. I'll probably hang on to this destop for another year as I plan on buying a new laptop soon.

I simply host the image elsewhere, on a reliable image host. Then I use the appropriate BBCode tags in order to hotlink the image. Of course, there is a button, in the toolbar above the text window, that will do that automatically.

To capture the image in the first place, I just press the PrtScr button on my keyboard. Then I crop the image with Irfanview and save it (as a jpeg) at the smallest compression that produces a clear image.

Hi,

For those unsure how to post attachments - it is better for the rest of us to view if you post as follows :

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/148532-how-use-snipping-tool-vista.html

If you use your own screen capture tool, instead of snipping tool, just click the Go Advanced button at the bottom of the thread page and follow Step 8 on of the above tutorial.

i use to have a 9500gt in a mini tower but i managed to fit a asus 9800gt in it palce

I believe that a 9500GT w/ 512mb of DDR3 will fit in my computer, and only require the additional purchase of another DVI to HDMI cable. I don't think that a 9800GT would physically fit in my HP Pavilion M9160F. The 8600GT/9500GT are around 7" long. That 9800GT is a long deal longer.

My HP has a lot weird bays for proprietary HP plug in drives (I don't think anyone actually bought those things.) I'd have to rip those out to accommodate the length of a 9800GT. Then there is the power/heat issue. My computer has a rather anemic 350W PSU. Without even looking, I'm sure that it wouldn't push that 9800GT. And, even if I was to rip out the bays and get a new PSU, the combination of a higher Wattage PSU and that 9800GT would heat my little crappy case up like an oven.

I just saw a slightly newer HP Pavalion Elite on for $350. So, rather than waste money on this thing, I'm just going to get the 9500GT (if I can find one for around $100 w/ DDR3) and leave it at that.

From here on out, I'm going to go back to building my own desktops. My next one will be in a tower the size of a laundry hamper.

cb48c4a7a3e7.jpg

I think the slight bump to a 9500GT/ DDR3 will be worth it. With one of my monitors disabled, my video performance jumped from 5.3 to 5.6.

Edit: Wait a minute! Did you fabricate the mount for that hard drive? I just noticed that it's flush against the front of the case.

You can get some 9500GTs with an actual HDMI port on it, so if you have HD monitors, then you can just get an actual HDMI cable instead.

I did not know that. Thanks.
I already have 2 HDMI cables that came with the monitors (as well as one DVI to HDMI cable that I was forced to buy for my present setup.) So, I shouldn't have to buy anything other than the card itself. :D

One that comes to mind is ASUS's 9500GT. Like you've mentioned about your PSU, the 9500, I think, will most likely need a 6 pin connector to power it as well.

Edit: Just looked and the ASUS one doesn't need an additional power connector as far as I know.

Overclocking an Athlon won't igve a great increase. I overclocked my Athlon x2 5200 when I had it and I only got like .1 increase.

Just about all quad cores seem to get 5.9, and possibly high end Core 2 Duos. Not sure that the Phenom x3s get.

Having removed all my overclocking and am now running at stock although still using SLI for video and memory. Under Vista x64 sp2 I get 5.9 accross the board. The good news is that with Win7 the ranges increase to 7.9 and I get the following scores:
Win7 exp scores no-over-clocking.jpg

Oh well ... Let the tuning begin and lets see if we can shake this old bucket of bolts up to warp 5.

upgrading my Ubuntu 8.1.0 to 9.0.4 even as we speak and we will see what that brings to the table. Can't wait for the Win7 pre-release deals. If the are as good as I have read I will be purchasing. Vista is good but win7 is better and my processors run a little bit cooler with win7, I also don't have those old naging network vers 6 to version 4 addressing issues that have plaged vista x64 since the beginning( I am really tired of Vista grabbing 169.xxx.xxx.xxx whenever my home server is offline and then having to use winipconfig to fix the networking (Stupid rabbit, trix is for kids and I aint no kid no more).

Here it is with SLI and PhyX enabled:
