For a mid-size Lenovo laptop it really isn't horrible.

Here's mine after replacing my generic Western Digital hard drives with Western Digital's Caviar Black Series (32meg) hard drives. Before that the "Primary Hard Disk" was 5.6

Edited because I finally found my snipping tool. Don't turn off "Tablet PC Optional Components" or you'll lose your snipping tool. ;)

w.e.i. score goes down
G' Day, this is not really a problem but i just bought a acer aspire 6930-733g50mn laptop, so after getting rid of all the software that was pre-loaded, i started to update drivers, before i down loaded the latest intel driver update for the graphics card which is, a mobile intel 4 series express chipset family, media accelerator 4500mhd, the W.E.I. Score was 3.7, after installing the updated driver the score went down to 3.2. just curious as to why.

Hi Jim,

Most laptop manufacturers (LMs) use modified versions of drivers. Intel, Realtek and other hardware manufacturers supply LMs with the basic versions of their drivers. The LMs then take the drivers and tweak/modify them to better work on their systems. Hence the sort of warning that you sometimes see on the manufacturer's website:
Realtek said:
Audio drivers available for download from the Realtek website are general drivers for our audio ICs, and may not offer the customizations made by your system/motherboard manufacturer. To be sure you obtain the full features/customizations provided in your original audio product, please download the latest drivers from your system/motherboard manufacturer's website.
Incidentally, anything above 3.0 is pretty reasonable for a laptop.

Incidentally, anything above 3.0 is pretty reasonable for a laptop.

Why is that?

I was wondering about how to improve my WEI 3.1 score. Been that since I bought this system.

Incidentally, will soon install a new 320GB HDD into the Laptop, but recent upgrade and installation of 2 x 2GB RAM boards had very little, if any effect on the WEI score.

Hi Tony,

With laptops, the important thing for manufacturers is to reduce power consumption, thus minimising heat generation and prolonging the battery life. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost. Many laptops contain mobile versions of the graphic processors (GPUs) that are present on graphic cards. However, although they are basically the same chip (with some modifications), that is where the similarity ends. Unlike the cards, where there is upto 1GB of dedicated memory, the mobile version typically has to use a portion of the main system memory. In addition, these versions are usually clocked slower than the desktop equivalent. Because of the dense arrangement of internal components in a laptop, and the fact that there is very little, if any, internal airflow, this means that heat generation must be kept to an absolute minimum. Reducing the speed (and therefore the power consumption) of internal components helps to achieve this.

Hi Tony,

With laptops, the important thing for manufacturers is to reduce power consumption, thus minimising heat generation and prolonging the battery life. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost. Many laptops contain mobile versions of the graphic processors (GPUs) that are present on graphic cards. .

Thanks Dwarf,
So in essence, Laptops will always give lower WEI scores.

Because of the heat factor and of where I live, my Laptop is propped up at the rear, where the unit fan is also located, with a 30mm timber moulding under the rear foot pads, leaving a good air-flow gap. It seems to work just fine, and is a trick I learned in the Army when operating US AN-PRC 47 Set and AN-PRC 160 Set, Radio Comms Systems, in tropical field conditions.

I shouldn't hit any problems with installing a new 320GB HDD that is specified at 5400rpm then?

Cheers Mate.
