Anyone can explain why Larry D scores higher on memory than I?

Hi,

Have you got 4x1gb, or 2x2 gb?

You might check in Bios to see if it's running at the correct speed.

I get 5.9 with 2x1gb - according to siv, it's running at 665mhz

It'll be the memory Dell put in to their XPS. It's just some crappy value RAM they use. My friend has an XPS 720 with 3GB of Hyundai RAM 800MHz and he only gets 5.0. It's single channel, but even my 667MHz RAM in single channel scores higher than that.

And unfortunateley, he can't upgrade. He tried buying 2x2GB of Corsair XMS2 with the DHX cooling and it didn't work because his voltage was too low, and because Dell lock the voltages, he had to send it back.

Hi Submarine,

Yes that could be it - the mobo might not be dual channel enabled.

You could check the manual to see.

Everlong - that's interesting, I get WEI 4.9 with 1x2gb 667 mhz in one slot, and 5.9 with 2x1gb 667mhz in 2 slots.

Iirc, it was around 5.3 or 5.4 at stock. I had it overclocked to 720MHz and it was at 5.6. That was with 3x1GB sticks as well. Then at stock it was 5.9 with 4x1GB of the same RAM.

Though with Submarine's problem, my best bet is that it's just the hardware he's using. From helping my friend fix his Dell 720 (which is what Submarine has, too) Dell haven't use any special motherboard or memory, just some bog standard stuff, and with my friend using 3x1GB and only reaching a rating of 5.0 for RAM.

Though what type of RAM are you using as well SIW2?

Hello all,
I am new to this and I have a question about the memory score. I just built my rig and installed all the necessary updates. I run my WEI and score 5.9 on everything except for Memory, which is 5.8. First question, I have 8GB (4x2GB) RAM of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 6400, with latencies of 5-5-5-18. How can speed this up in the bios to attain that .1 and improve my overall gaming experience???
Specs:

Hi dhoward8,

What Ram score do you get if take 2 sticks out, so you have 2x2gb in dual channel mode - probably 5.9 ?

You may need to check your mobo manual to make sure dual channel is enabled.

I get 5.9 with 2x1gb running at 667mhz.

Hope it helps

BIOS and specs say I have 800 Mhz and Dual channel. I would think BIOS would not say that if the MB could not handle it. I cannot say type of RAM, may very well be cheap, but how cheap can it be? Anything else to look for?

Hi submarine,

You might to get the free program SIV from here

SIV - System Information Viewer

It runs as an .exe, just right click and run as admin. - the first window that pops up will show you the current RAM speed and timings - and a lot more.

It seems overwhelming at first - best way to handle it is to right click the Wizard in the notification area and look thru. the options - amazing what it does.

Another favorite of mine is of course SIW , free version available from here

SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala

Hope you find them fun and informative

800 MHz will normally not give you a 5.9 score (not without aggressive timings) - I have to bump mine form 800 to the specs it was made for, 1000, in order to see a 5.9 on my system.

The problem is that there was not a JEDEC specification for RAM speeds at over 400 (which is 800 in dual channel mode) so the motherboard defaults it to that speed regardless of what it is rated to.

It could - and it could also be related to the fact that the two of you may not have identical motherboards....or power consumption....or any of a number of different things....
