@ HexManiac,. Thanks for the info. I don't plan to overclock, but it is always worth knowing the how and why.

Hi Dinesh,
THANKS
I get to Step 16...but can not seem to modify my scores. From my WinSPR tags in WordPad I show:
<WinSPR>
<SystemScore>5.8</SystemScore>
<MemoryScore>5.9</MemoryScore>
<CpuScore>5.8</CpuScore>
<CPUSubAggScore>4.2</CPUSubAggScore>
<VideoEncodeScore>4.3</VideoEncodeScore>
<GraphicsScore>5.9</GraphicsScore>
<GamingScore>5.9</GamingScore>
<DiskScore>5.9</DiskScore>
</WinSPR>
So my lowest score is 4.2...yet I still show 5.8.
Thanks Again. John Lak (Korki)

Hi Korki,

Check your BIOS settings. Some BIOSes have the ability to disable all but one of the cores in the processor for diagnostic and compatibility reasons.
Hey Dwarf!
Thank You Very Much for your advice.

Yeah...I'm a NOOB. HOW do I chck /alter BIOS to be certain I'm getting Perfomance I paid for.

Hi John, I am not too familiar with the AMD Quad Core but I think you have got to be getting more than 4.2 exp. If BIOS isn't the culprit have a look at the Tutorial section on speeding things up in Vista.

It seems to me also that we are in danger of missing the point with exp. scores. They don't really mean too much in the scheme of things if your computor does what you want it to. What they are good for is highlighting problem areas, as in the case of my BIOS incorrectly reading my RAM sticks, and in Johns case, where he should get better results. With a 2.4 Quad core I get a 5.9 exp.

John, I just checked the performance scores for your processor at Tomshardware. Results of the multi-threaded processor benchmark from synthetic suite 3DMark06 were Intel Quad Core 6600 - 3507, AMD Phenom 9600 - 3245. That not such a huge difference and your CPU should be giving you better results. Anybody else have any thoughts?

He may have an older BIOS and his processor clock and multiplier may not be set up properly (up to spec).

Hee Hee!
Great responses from All. I learned a lot. Thank YOU!

I have a Gateway GT5676 bought in April '07... It's got a basic OEM MB made by Foxconn (Begal RS780) which they Do Not support. I talked to them.
The BIOS is Am Megatrends 7B3G1804 Ver. 8.00.14 dated 2/18/08... so is not so old, I think.
With the AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-core /ATI HD3870 GPU I think it is a decent gamer entry @ < $1K w/o monitor/pntr.

But will not OC (actually will Not Let me)... at least thru ATI's CCC ver 8.9 Always reverts to the default 300Mhz GPU Clock and 1170 MHz Memory clock.

ATI does have a QUANTUM FORCE HD380 BIOS Editor...which requires Flashing the BIOS but I'm too new (re: Chicken) to try.

So I'll just have to wait to get a 790gx/SB750 MB some day.

Lastly 4 point of reference my Call Of Juarez benchmark FPS scores are:
14 Min
59 Max and
30 AVG

C Ya! Time for a beverage ... a "Caucasian", ala The Dude
John

I had a problem with my RAM and it brought all but my HDD score down. Your memory might be a bottleneck therefore reducing you entire score...

<<When you say 2 HD video cards do you mean an ATI HD something?>>

Then again i might be completely wrong about your score. WEI is not a good measuring system as it only targets some very specific components and functions. For example Quads get better scores in WEI but only really in video conversion and editing do they step above Duals.

Use 3dMark or PCMark to get a more rounded score.

I am not a great person to be talking down the WEI system really as my system is a 5.8 because of Core2Duo (see what i mean about Quads v Duos) and HDD (GPU and RAM are both 5.9).

Hi Tristan,

What is the configuration of your RAM? If your motherboard is capable of dual channel mode and you are using 3 x 1GB sticks then that could explain it. To get the maximum performance from your RAM in this mode, both channels need to be balanced. Any inbalance can cause the memory controller to default to single channel mode. For 3GB you need 2 sticks @ 1GB and 2 @ 512MB. It is also important that, apart from their capacity, the RAM matches in terms of speed and timing. You also need to ensure that the memory slots are correctly populated, i.e. Channel 1 Slot A and Channel 2 Slot A need to be the same as do both slot Bs (these might be colour-coded, in which case you need to ensure that slots of the same colour have identical RAM in them). Check you motherboard manual for any limitations that may exist as regards RAM capacity and also the effect of using all available slots. For example, some older systems had limitations which meant that although they were capable of supporting 4GB of RAM they could only do so with 4 x 1GB sticks, and they could only do so by reducing the memory speed so instead of running at, say, DDR-400 rate it would only be running at DDR-333 rate. This reduces the memory bandwidth.
For best performance, I would either stick with just 2GB or go with 4GB but in the form of 2 x 2GB sticks.

I get a 5.9 on my RAM because i payed $230 AUD and got 1066MHz RAM with 5-5-5-15 timings. You might only have 800MHz @ 5-5-5-18.

I like what Dwarf said. Take a stick out and see if your score gets higher.

+

Dwarf i have 4x1GB sticks and there is no speed reduction however you were talking about older mobos.

EDIT: Tristan-117 i might be wrong but when i looked at your sysytem specs it seems that you are using a laptop. Is this correct? If so i will let you knwo that a laptop will ALWAYS score lower than a desktop. Even with the exact same hardware in a desktop and a laptop the desktop will come out on top.
