Hi Korki,

Check your BIOS settings. Some BIOSes have the ability to disable all but one of the cores in the processor for diagnostic and compatibility reasons.

I have to say that my little lappy compares extremely favourably to some of the rigs posted on here. I do not have any major graphics card, only an nVidia Geforce 8600M GS and 4gb ram and my index score is not that bad!

Thanks Dwarf, I am running The Xtreem Dark DDR2-800 which " uses choice die from original manufacturers and is equipped with the Aluminum heat-sink printed with the Xtreem logo like its brother in the same series. Besides ventilation, the heat-sink brings a special tone to make the product both reliable and attractive. In terms of performance, besides a data transfer bandwidth at 6.4Gpbs, the timing configuration of the Xtreem Dark DDR2-800 is 4(CL)-4(tRCD)-4(tRP)-12(tRAS). From the viewpoint of CAS latency (CL), the factor affecting performance most, as the CL of most DDR2-800 modules is 5, the Xtreem Dark DDR2-800 can display the uniqueness of the DDR400+ specification." The spec are a little higher than your Corsair, yet you get a 5.9 compared to my 5.7?

The FSB has quite a bit to do with memory throughput. I switched out a Q6600 with a Q9450 (and changed absolutely nothing else) and memory went from a 5.4 to a 5.8. After a new BIOS and some memory settings tweaking, I was finally able to get it to 5.9.

I fixed my memory. Now 5.9. Bios was recognizing it as 677mhz, 5,5,5,15. Changed it in Bios to manufacturers settings - 800mhz, 4,4,4,12 and voila. Thanks for the advice fellas. Take a pat on the back and a brownie point each from me. Now, how do I fix my 5.7 exp on the Hard Drives, Ha, ha

Here’s what mine looked like:

Close the window. Time to create an extra XML file. You need to Update your score, to do so use the steps outlined here. Once it has completed you are ready to start the process:
To access the XML file, follow these steps:

1. Open the Windows Explorer and navigate to the Windows directory.
2. Open the Performance directory, followed by the WinSAT directory.
3. Open the DataStore folder.
4. You will see two or more XML files, we want to work with the most recent one (the one you just created).
5. Right-click the file and select Properties.
6. Click the Security tab.
7. Click the Edit button.
8. When the UAC prompt appears, click Continue.
9. Click the Add button.
10. Input your username and click OK.
11. Select the username and then click the Full Control checkbox in the Allow column.
12. Click OK.
13. When the Security prompt appears, click Yes.
14. We can now modify the file. Right-click the XML file, click Open With and select WordPad.
15. Look for the information within the WinSPR tags.
16. Modify the scores. Remember, your base score will be the lowest value of the 5 subscores. Make it realistic, nobody is going to be fooled with a massive increase in your score.
17. Save the file.

Now go back to the Performance Information and Tools window and check your modified score. Here’s my modification:

A RAID would probably do it. A boost in FSB might give you enough. Buying a new WD Raptor or Velociraptor would do it. But 5.7 is nothing to look down on. That is a fast system, no doubts.

My RAID 0 array gives me 5.9.

It could also be because i'm using SATA II drives with 32Mb of cache. Not sure how Vista determines the difference in scores.

I'm only using 7200RPM drives FYI

Thanks Guys, Dinesh, I am not sure thats the type of imorovement I wanted. I think Raid might be the option. I looked at FSB but until I get better CPU and Northbridge cooling I don't want to do any overclocking. Just a question though, how would an FSB boost cause an increase in hard drive performance?

Can't beat it NormCameron, Vista Home Basic sucks cause of no aero.

Yeah. Of course I had to tweak my system. I boosted the FSB, finurgled the RAM and bamboozled the PCI. Oh, and the best thing, the one that gave me the biggest boost in my Windows Experience Score was installing Adobe Photoshop.

Also I have OEM crap motherboard so I can't tweak anything only upgraded ram and installed a graphics card cause onboard sucks.

Since most of the data transfers from disk are actually from cache memory through the disk controller and the disk controller runs at bus frequency, adjusting the FSB could improve transfer rates. It could also jack up your disk, too. In most cases, read/write speed of a drive cannot be adjusted. But with the increased usage of cache in drives today, it's possible. I don't overclock my systems, so I could not tell you if it does.
