Today (Monday) I got a nasty letter from the TV Licensing people threatening me with court action because I don’t have a TV Licence. I don’t watch TV and therefore I don’t need a TV licence.

Anyone else feeling intimidated by these people?

Not being in the UK, please forgive my ignorance, but what in heaven's name is a TV license that people who don't watch TV need one? I mean, do you have a TV and could watch it but just don't (so it would be like America where you could have and pay for cable TV and never turn it on but still need to pay because you have the service)? Is this license from a private company or is it something from the government? What criteria must you meet to require a TV license - I mean, who do they say needs one and who do they say doesn't? What does this license grant you the rights to do? How much does it cost? Other than taking you to court to pay the bill, can they do anything else that affects you (say cut off your ability to watch TV if you ever decided to do so)? Is there a website that explains this licensing thing?

Thanks!

P.S. Oh, and welcome to Vista Forums! I didn't do so properly in your other thread or before here and apologize for taking so long to do so. Today I joined the forum in an attempt to conquer my initial annoyance with Vista. I tried it once before but gave in too easily and reinstalled Windows XP. Now I’m told that Windows XP will soon become obsolete and I really should get used to Vista or give Windows 7 a try. I’ll stick with Vista for now.

Vista is great now, enough time has passed to sort out most of the problems people had at the start. You will like it once you start using it daily.:D

Are these like Final exams for your classes or more like what we in the States would call AP (Advanced Placement) exams Learn About Advanced Placement Program AP Exams and Courses to give you credits before you even begin college and/or allow you to skip the introductory and "required" courses because you've proven you already have the knowledge? And how can you take 1/4 of the exam - are they divided into 4 parts that you can take on different days (or need to take on different days because they are so long)? Do you get to choose which you take or do you have to take them all or do you need to take them for the subjects in which you took courses? Can you take them over if you don't like the scores and does the better or most recent score apply or are all reported anyway? Is there some website that explains this testing process and what it means and how the scores are used and what the different levels mean and such?

When I was in high school, there weren't AP classes per se, just the exams. You got a score of 1-5. 5 meant you knew the subject cold and 1 meant you shouldn't have wasted time taking the exam. I took them in Calculus, French, Chemistry, and Physics. When I started at Johns Hopkins, I got 8 credits in Calculus and was able to start with Advanced Calculus and 6 credits in French and was able to start with Intermediate French. Although I did well in Chemistry and Physics (both 4's though and not 5's like the other two), Hopkins didn't allow AP exams to apply to those courses and everyone had to start with the introductory courses anyway (but not every college I applied to had that rule - it's just that the AP exams were of no value at Hopkins - and that was probably correct because those classes were dramatically harder than anything I'd learned before and I would not have been prepared for the more advanced classes without having taken their introductory courses).

This was completely different than the SAT exams which were required by pretty much every college and which were a major factor (with GPA) in whether or not the college/university admitted you at all. I did very well on these and was accepted in all but one college to which I applied (I did so with 6 and only Harvard said no) but got into the university that was my first choice anyway.

None of these tests had the slightest impact on jobs or careers - they weren't included in resumes and nobody cared. Pretty much all that counted was GPA and, if you went to a university, which one it was and its reputation.

Anyway, it seems like things are quite a bit different there and I am curious.

Hello Lorien!

In England, exams are slightly different. Boys either change school at 11/13, girls can do either, but it is far more common for them to change at 11. SATS are just exams. These are not really entrance exams, but more of a serious end of year 2, 6, and 9 exam. They are taken into consideration.

More importantly, GCSEs are taken in year 11 (16 year olds) and are serious exams, taken in a choice of about 12 subjects. Normally, you would do maths, sciences, French, classical Greek, Latin, History etc. etc. although the choice is huge (programming, PE, games, photography, cooking, food tech etc. etc. My school would never allow me to do any of these subjects) Although A Levels are more important for university, when you apply to university, you haven't got your A level results back, and it all falls back onto GCSEs. They are becoming easier and easier, with less and less material, to such an extent that you still struggle to get into Uni with straight A*s. Vast numbers of students from accross the country now get straight A*s. GCSEs are important.

AS Levels are taken the next year. They are taken in about 5 subjects, what you will specialise in. For me, Double maths, and all three sciences. Again, these are important.

A Levels, are taken the next year again. You usually drop a subject, three or four. For me, double maths, chemistry, and physics. These results don't come back until your university place has been provisionally accepted, falling back on GCSEs, AS levels, interviews, and extra exams.

You can then take a gap year if you wish. I wouldn't. It is just a wasted, unproductive year, and makes you worse in maths/sciences, and better in things like English, where more maturity is better. Then how do you support yourself, etc. If you wish to go to a posh university such as Oxford/Cambridge (shortened to Oxbridge) then you need additional exams and practice.

University starts at a high level. There is no revision. The plough/plow on with very advances topics, unlike American universities. If you haven't got the A Levels, university is either out of the question, or next to out of the question.

You then do your degree, with master's or doctorate as well, possibly.

My father is a visiting professor at a university :) Some people don't like him very much either. I cannot go into details, but he is a doctor, and went back to university to do another degree. His thesis proved that some ethnic backgrounds are more susceptable to frostbite and cold injuries. Now with that proven, can companies use those ethnic people in cold places. What if they get frostbite, and call a layer, and show this thesis as mistreatment when they knew the risks. He wasn't very sensible to write it, actually.

Anyway!

Thanks, Richard. That was very interesting and educational. It seems like y'all take a lot of different exams over the years - too many IMHO. I'm glad it's so much simpler here (or rather, that there are fewer such exams and they are generally optional except for the SAT - and that's only really required if you do plan to go to college). Things may have changed in 40 years - I haven't really checked into it recently (actually, at all since then). For all I know, it could be almost as bad here these days.

As far as universities in America go, they are quite different from each other. Some are as you stated (in fact, I'd say that was true of most). But there are some that are every bit as difficult and advanced and challenging as anything offered anywhere (e.g., Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Yale, MIT, CalTech, and a few others). Like everywhere though, the true issue is what you do in school - how many classes you take, which classes you take, how well you do in those classes, and so forth. These advanced universities offer options not available elsewhere and proceed at a pace matched by few others (e.g., Organic Chemistry completed the entire top-of-the-line text at Hopkins whereas I know other schools that actually used the same text, but in a year did less than have of it - or used a much easier and simpler text altogether).

If you do well at one of these advanced universities, admission to graduate school, law school, medical school, dental school, veterinary school, or whatever is virtually guaranteed - and if you do very well it's pretty much the school of your choice (with a few exceptions where competition is fierce and you need something else - a "political" in, a "financial" in, some type of very special achievement, an IQ very much above the norm, or sometimes just dumb luck). Then your career is either defined by the choice or you will be able to start much higher in corporate America (or probably anywhere in the world).

Most in my class now have some sort of doctorate (I'd say over 90% - perhaps even higher). I simply couldn't afford it at the time (and my family was too rich to allow me to get scholarships but not so rich as to give me the support to do so without the financial aid) and then got caught up in my career when I should have balanced both and gotten the doctorate part-time while working full-time. Instead, I worked harder and advanced faster than most others - but eventually not having the doctorate made things harder than they otherwise could have been (I think). In the end, I did a mid-life career change (I never really liked taking orders from other people and having a doctorate would have minimized that aspect of things earlier) and started my own business a little over 20 years ago (where none of that really mattered very much given the type of business - which may have been different had I been a doctor). I suspect I'd be wealthier today had I gotten a doctorate, but I'm not sure I'd be happier (and will never really know for sure) - but I would not have met my wife and THAT would have been an incomparable loss and is for me enough to outweigh all the rest.

Anyway, take care and best of luck to you no matter where life takes you. The truth is that being happy is more important than any of the rest of it (and I mean long-term happy as opposed to just happy for the moment and then live in regret from then on).

Have a good one!

You are more than welcome! It is fascinating!

In my mother's day she went to a dreadful stateschool school (knife fights sort), she did 11+ all by herself, amazingly passed, got into a Grammar school, it got turned into a dreadful secondary modern, wasting all of her hard work, yet she persevered, attempted O(dinary), A(dvanced), and then an S level and failed, being taught only a third of the physics syllabus. Tried for a university place, where she had no hope of getting in, but eventually was taken in by one man in Medical School as a chance case - he saw somethng in her inteview. She was the first person to go to university from her school, did a bit of basic medical training, and then got packed off to Germany by people who saw nothing of her, to crash and burn. Then came an exam which people so rarely passed first time, the idea being to keep retaking until success. Nobody had ever passed from Germany. Under a horrible and detrimental consultant, who kept having a go at her for being a woman in a man's field, she was spurred on, and under her own volition passed first time, the first time anybody from Germany ever had. Bullied and almost abused for beating some men from Germany, she had a rough few years, but eventually qualified. After many years, she became a consultant aneathitist, with one of the best reputations in the country. She is my inspiration.

Is there a website that explains this licensing thing?

It's complicated to explain but you can get some idea of what we are dealing with if you check out these links.

Hello all!

Sorry I haven't been around very much recently. This was not deliberate, but after just a week of term, I feel absolutely burnt out. I am just so tired, permanent headache, stiff joints, I struggle to focus my eyes. I am just doing a little bit to much. Do you mind if I just take a short brake until the weekend, to try to catch up on a little sleep, and generally get a bit better? I have already put everything else electronic (online and programming) on hold, and I will be back properly as soon as possible, but I just feel really aweful. I will be vaguely around. If you see something you want me to see, just stick a link on my profile, and I will have a look.

Thanks so much!

Richard

Well I hope you are feeling better soon :)

Thanks Tom!

I am sure I will be better soon :)

P.S. Nice (obvious) signature!

Take a break mate, Overworking is not good for you, after the break you will be able to get more done than if you struggled through.

Thanks for the heads up, Roy! I have made some cuts, and hopefully that will reduce the deficit :)

Haven't felt very good over the last few days....laid on the couch most of the day. Feel somewhat normal now, went and put gas in my truck since it's going to get really cold tonight, took the garbage out, and just plan on sitting around on the laptop keeping warm all night.

Good gosh! It seems like an awful lot of us (myself included) have suffered health or overworking or such problems recently. I wonder if this is contagious from the site (like a virus)? LOL!

Here's to a quick and full recovery for everyone afflicted with anything or just simply needing a break (or at least a solid remission for those where a recovery is not a consideration). And I hope nobody else joins in - i assure you it's not a group to which you want to belong.

I just awoke from a long nap (10:30PM my time) and expect to be up for 3-4 hours before crashing again until whatever morning turns out to be tomorrow. I have 8 replies first, and then I can look at new threads.

One of my toughest threads broke today and got resolved - and I'm really happy about that. Don't forget that one option to consider is posting yourself in another forum (instead of just suggesting it to the OP - then you can choose the correct forum, provide all the right information, and be sure the question is properly asked) - in this case, the response I received and recommended resulted in the OP fixing the problem (and I learned something as well).

Have a good one everyone!
