today i went to work and waited all day for a mechanic to call me and say my car was done, buti knew better...since he told me one price, then called me back and jacked it up another 150.00 because, "he got in a hurry and messed up the first time". Yeah, gotcha buddy. Original price only.

What a lame excuse to jack the price up, no imagination.

Tell me about it.

Anyway...today I launched my Indie GoGo campaign for my latest film project. Hoping to raise the necessary funds for the film. Here's our Facebook page: Login | Facebook

I didn't know you were an expert with Ubuntu - it's good to know for future reference. Good luck in that thread (it has been most difficult for for the rest of us - and the OP is pretty good comparatively).

Heh, I wouldn't say I'm an expert ;)
Nah, I used Ubuntu alot, every machine I have had has had a partition for Ubuntu, at the moment I'm posting from Ubuntu Netbook on my netbook.
I'll get to that thread in the afternoon since the OP isn't online. ;)

Welcome back, MWRed. Glad to hear all the wiring is done - but I'll bet you still have a ton of moving-related crap to do. When I last moved about 19-20 years ago, it took weeks before we were settiled. Just getting the library setup and alphabetized took more than a week on its own - and that's just that part. And we even had moving people to help (since it was a paid relocation) and while that certainly helped - even that wasn't enough. I suspect you have quite a bit of work ahead of you. Don't forget to repost your new internet speed results in that thread so we can all see how your new setup is serving you (good or bad - we'd be interested).

I had another relapse but recovered again (*sigh*). I've had one point of rep since 12/29 - not all too surprising given the reduced posting, but still very discouraging on top of everything else (and I have helped some people even during this time and received some thankful posts - but it's obviously not enough and I need to do more). I clearly need to post more and get to new theads faster and get back on track. Saw the pulmonologist yesterday and got new medication, so perhaps that will help (and I've personally cut back on some other medication because I think part of the problem was the side effects and that seems to be helping).

Daniel, I'd say you were an expert on Ubuntu and saw the thread and what you did and acknowledged your contribution accordingly - though not in the thread as the OP seems to have seen nicely to that (and I did notice the nice new orange pip - congrats!). I think the OP could probably have done it on his own (he really does deserve the skilled badge given all the options he did and tried on his own) - but he was apparently using an old copy and that was a big part of the problem. But your instructions were great - in fact, I would suggest you consider writing a tutorial on the topic for both VF and SF as we have nothing that really deals with this and can obviously use one (and I'd say you have the skills to both come up with the procedures and the skills to write it - Shawn will help you when you're done with the formatting and some editing and such things, all you need to do is get it down in final draft form). I wouldn't be surprised if Brink even awarded rep for contributing a tutorial - but there's no guarantee there (still it would make you a bonified author and one of only a few besides Brink who have published Tutorials here). Even if not a tutorial, perhaps they would at least make it a sticky thread in one of the forums - not quite sure where else it belongs (there are many places it would be useful), but certainly somewhere.

BTW Daniel, I don't think I've every owned a partitioned hard drive (at least not for very long until I fixed that problem). I can see the point if you want to dual-boot and there have been times where I wished I'd partitioned to allow that, but I guess I'm stuck in my old ways (and with a laptop I have a space issue - I'm fine, but not if I do a significant partition, whereas with a desktop I'd just add another drive). I know booting Vista from an External USB Drive is a major PITA (if it can even be done given the hardware and BIOS and other factors), but is it the same for Ubuntu? Could a dual boot be setup to boot to the laptop drive for Vista and the External USB Drive for Ubuntu with fewer problems (except the boot files which EasyBCD should handle I think and possibly the BIOS though I'm not sure given it is Ubuntu) - or would it need to be done some other way? Don't waste time researching it for me - just answer if you already know one way or the other. I may want to give it a shot, but that's the only way I'd consider it. I'd also consider it if it could be booted over the network (then I could put an Ubuntu drive in one of my desktops) - but I don't see how that's possible unless done somehow through a disk at least initially.

Well, here's hoping I have a better day today than the prior week and can participate at my previously normal levels and with the same quality. I guess we'll know the answer tomorrow - LOL!

Take care eveyone, and have a great day and let's see what we can do to help some OPs and try to resolve some of these open threads (even some of the older ones) as well as replying to new ones.

Best wishes!

Thankyou!
I will do that tutorial, I've got some exams and stuff to deal with first, but after I'l get right on it thanks for the suggestion, and the rep too ;)

As for dual-booting Ubuntu, at the moment, my netbook is triple-booting Seven Professional, Vista Home Basic and Ubuntu Netbook with no problems. The actual hard drive inside is 250GB and is in 4 partitions, one from each OS, Vista is the biggest since it was pre-installed, Seven is a 50GB partition and Ubuntu is a 10GB partition, then there is the factory install partition for resets and stuff, that is about 10GB too.

I am slowly shrinking the Vista partition and extending the Seven partition to make it the main OS on there.
If you are going to dual-boot Ubuntu, there is a tutorial here made by Brink/Shawn that explains how to shrink and create new partitions, if you need it, I'm sure I can find the link for you ;)

My question is can you dual boot Vista and Ubuntu with Vista installed on the laptop's single-partition hard drive and Ubuntu installed on a single partition external USB hard drive (though I may create two partitions there so I can do Vista image backups on the same drive)? I know how to repartition the internal drive to get it done if I want to go that route - but I'd prefer to use the external USB hard drive for Ubuntu if possible (and that I'm not sure if it can be done - it's almost but not quite impossible with Vista even if you have the right BIOS and hardware).

Yes it is Lorien I have done what you have asked what you need to do is when you install Ubuntu is to Remember to set up a partition for the Swap space ( Pagefile) to reduce crashes and then Remember to Install the Boot Loader that you get with Ubuntu to the HDD otherwise if the HDD is not connected you will not be able to access your Vista Partition on your Internal HDD , this is quite a tricky Process but I am sure you can do it ;)

Please be advised that If you Install Ubuntu on your Internal HDD it will write a GRUB Boot Loader to your HDD and will Write it over Windows Boot Loader , so if you Ever delete the Ubuntu Partition then you will get an error and will not be able to boot into Windows unless you restore the Master Boot Record by the Command:

Code:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

(If this does happen use the Command Prompt in the Recovery Disk or Installation Disk Via - Repair My Computer)

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Yes you can do what I did with this software.

Thanks for all the Ubuntu information everyone - I believe I will partition my external HDD and install it in dual-boot mode.

I appreciate the assistance and the links.

Most of whats left is just to put some smaller stuff away, but today, since i'm home all day, i'm finally taking time to relax after a rough, hectic month or so.

Just a generic test I did. nothing seems different than before, but this is on a laptop/wireless. Seems to be about the same as when I was on my desktop.

Today I joined the forum in an attempt to conquer my initial annoyance with Vista. I tried it once before but gave in too easily and reinstalled Windows XP. Now I’m told that Windows XP will soon become obsolete and I really should get used to Vista or give Windows 7 a try. I’ll stick with Vista for now.
