Sully, were you local, state, or federal LEO?

Worked with the feds...DOC, front line stuff...and contracted for BATFE...
Know lots of tha' 3 including a few others....

Also was southwestern (USA) district LE distributor for major firearms manufacturer and dealt with destructives too....Don't wanna' wander to close to TOS line though...:o

I have nothing against these people who protect us (though I think I can do a pretty good job myself and better if not for the weaponry laws in Maryland)

Amen brother, and Maryland..well nuff said there!:sarc:

And while these parents may not have been as strict as you'd like (or maybe as was needed), at least they were trying to do something and that's more than way too many others these days.

Again, Amen bro...:) young'ins today are master social engineers as well as manipulators of the laws. I really do have faith in our next generation, We'll be good if we don't leave 'em with debt up to thier eyeballs....

Between you and me, I'm a push-over....Ask my students..:o

In my own youth, I only remember being punished once - I was actually a pretty good kid and easy to control (possibly too easy as I made up for lost time once i got to college).

Only once!!!!! Me, I was a complete party animal....... my poor ma' and pa' !....:o

And I've said it before, asullivan, you are a true madman - and it's great.

Awwww Shucks.....

Again, flattery will get ya' everywhere's....

I just hope no one took what I said to indicate I'm a hard nosed old coot thats mean and nasty, again I'm a complete creampuff.:)

I mean really Lorien, look at my mug......friendly as a bed bug....:p

Rich, You are so right on when you said "the best way to learn is to teach"....Man O' Man....I have learned so much from my students it is absolutely incredible. Learning is definitely a two way street, no doubt about it, no doubt...:)

I also mention to my students that traveling is a real trip (pardon da' pun) and learning experence...

Many years ago after grad. skool, I took a pencil, closed ma' eyes, spun da' globe, and said to myself...."where this pencil goes Grasshopper shall go.:D....It landed smack dab in tha' NE part of the south china sea.....right between China and the R.O.C....

Bought a one way ticket, hopped on Trigger and away we flew, Found a great job, a dream job....2 years later we came back to tha' good ole' U.S.of A.

I bent down a kissed the tarmac, sure was good to be back home....Been travel'in ever since. In fact, I got tha' itch again or trigger gave me da' fleas!!

Trigger!!!!!

Many, but not all of the regulars I expected showed up yesteday - but I found it to be a rather slow day (with a couple of fairly active threads and BSOD seemed to be hopping). Thanks to everyone who helped - and to those who didn't show (as was right and proper), I hope you had a very Marry X-Mas indeed.

We had a great home-cooked (my wife's a wonderful cook when she wants to be) corned beef and cabbage dinner (and the cats just loved the very minor fat trimmings). Now we get to look forward to corned beef hash over the next day or two (which I like even better).

Well, it's now 3:30AM here (got up at 3AM) and I expect a busier day as people install software and hardware gifts and have trouble with them. Plus I have a few unresolved threads that need some attention. I expect to be here mostly while alert (which may be less than usual as I had a tough night sleeping and I'm already/still having trouble breathing and have used the emergency inhaler twice in 30 minutes when it's meant for every 4 hours - but I'll do what I can).

Have a good one everyone.

BTW, I recommend to everyone that you at least subscribe to the GiveawayoftheDay thread in this forum http://www.vistax64.com/chillout-room/285824-giveaway-day.html. You only have 1 day to take advantage of it when I post one (which isn't often) and that way if you use alerts you're more likely to see it in time (as it gets buried by the more active threads quite quickly). To subscribe without posting, just click on Thread Tools near the top and click on Subscribe to thread and that'll do it.

Besides being clumsy being so small, aren't internet access minutes very limited unless you pay a fortune for an upgraded plan? Is it really going to take that long for a connection? Is it DSL or cable or something else? I know DSL would be only a couple of days and cable about the same (assuming the lines are already mostly run - at least to the property if not to the house). No idea on other sources. I'll bet if you contact customer support and keep asking for supervisors and managers until you reach someone who will not let you go further, you'll find someone along the way who can speed things up for you.

Sorry about the hangover, but you knew it would happen last night (and it was probably worth it especially now that it's pretty much over). I find that drinking about 3-4 large glasses of water and 3-4 aspirin just before bed sometimes helps (and sometimes doesn't).

Thanks for the suggestion - I've edited the post.

In regard to Giveaway of the Day, for whatever it's worth, I used to check Giveaway of the Day every day for a very long time, and frequently tried their giveaways. I found that most of them were mediocre at best, and very poor at worst. I ended up uninstalling most of the ones I tried. Then I discovered that if you click their link to the manufacturer's page, and scroll down to the bottom, there are users/posters' comments which are very helpful, and a great guide to exactly how good (or not good) each of the apps are. It helped me to be much more discriminating in what I chose to download, and there were a number of hints and suggestions as to how to solve problems with the apps that were offered.

Yes, it's that link that I try to post in the thread noted above when I see something I think is worthwhile (which is not very often). I noticed it being done in SF and decided to start it here, but I'm a lot pickier than they are (I post less than half of what they do) and actually visit the product's website before I recommend something (despite whatever the comments say) - and sometimes even installl and try it myself first. I now get an e-mail with a link to the section with the info you're talking about every day and check it out. If I find a freeware product that's just as good (or better), I don't post it - but sometimes add it elsewhere in the forums. I'd say at best one a week may be worthwhile (but often it's specialized for people who like audio or video products or things like that - but if it's a good product I'll add it anyway and note that it's for people with that interest). I hope it helps some people - I found one in particular that I'm really happy I was able to get, but so far that's about it for me.

I have found that on these websites there are often a single program than may help users. For this reason I am agreeing with Lorien.

There are quite often programs that have no use at all, but on the odd time something comes along. It is this that you want to be interested in.

No scheduled chores - tomorrow either. Breathing is better than normal (for a change). Plan to spend most of the day on VF (though I do have some computer maintenance to do). I'm pretty much caught up on older threads finally - or they are so old they have obviously been forgotten or resolved or are no longer of concern to the OP and I'll respond if refreshed or get a PM.

I still need to figure out how to uninstall some of the old (especially those listed as insecure) programs Secunia PSI found on my system that aren't in Programs & Features and can't be found by Revo either (like the 2003 version of Powerpoint Viewer and Apple Quicktime 7.0x which I certainly don't need as I have Office Enterprise 2007 and the latest version of iTunes/Quicktime installed and while I can see the Powerpoint folder in the Office folders (but can't find Quicktime 7.0x for the life of me), I'm not sure deleting the folder is the way to go as uninstalling that way is never a good idea as there could be other files elsewhere as well as registry entries). Some that are beyond "end of life" I may or may not uninstall - some because I still use them and others because they cost a lot to upgrade and I may still want to use them. I'm not sure about the safety of keeping these programs, but there's a limit to how far I'm going to go if I see no real dangers other than that they are old (especially for programs that don't access the internet at all). I guess I may have to bite the bullet and delete that folder and then I'm going to have to go on a registry search expedition as I suspect that's where some of this is coming from. Others have been updated but are still showing the older versions (but not the newer version) - possibly because I haven't rebooted since the upgrades (it's just been working or sleeping and I haven't rebooted in a few days). I guess I'll have to take some time to reboot just to see if it helps refresh the entries - and I suppose it can't hurt on just general principles either (what a PITA)! BTW, there were only 12 and just a little less than half I think will resolve with a reboot and I think I can get rid of a few others likw the two above (at least partially or enough so they no longer appear). Those few after that I'll either be keeping or will find some way to find and delete them and, if needed, find a free replacement - none can be upgraded for free.

Oh, and we have new health insurance next year (Aetna to CVS) but no cards yet (or account numbers or contact information or squat). I guess my wife needs to look into that before we run out of meds or have doctor visits (both of which are, as always, coming up soon).

BTW, I got my first orange pip to go with the two medals - but just barely. Still, it's nice to see there though I suspect it'll be a while before the next one given the speed of significant rep in the recent past.

Hope everyone has a good week - especially since it ends early again.

Take care everyone and I hope to see you out there in the threads. Don't forget, if you run into any problems, I'm just a PM away and will do my best to help if I can.

I got given an old laptop today that I repaired for a friend, they went and bought a netbook. It was infected with more viruses than you can shake a stick at. It was owned by one of my mates that is in the same trade as me so this is the norm for people who have less experiance in computers. I was thinking about giving it to my wife as my backup computer, (laptop) is quite heavy (HP Pavilion) about 5 years old. I installed linux on the computer given to me (we all love free OS) plus it will give me experiance with a new OS. If I do go into computer repair it will help to play with a new OS.

Lorien, I often find that after deleting programs, I too have to go and delete folders and files and also registry entries that are left behind. It is a chore, but one worth doing.

today i went to work and waited all day for a mechanic to call me and say my car was done, buti knew better...since he told me one price, then called me back and jacked it up another 150.00 because, "he got in a hurry and messed up the first time". Yeah, gotcha buddy. Original price only.

What a lame excuse to jack the price up, no imagination.
