Today [2]

Today I don't plan on doing much, still feeling ill :/

Does anyone remember that thread called "Teens, parental controls and bios" or something like that, the OP's name was Dee. Was that ever solved? Was thinking about it last night, really been bugging me actually

I remember. I think MamaDee sort of gave in. Something along the lines of "Why do I have to be a computer guru and coder just to stop my children accessing certain websites and programs!?".

We had helped her configure blocking on the router, set up passwords, etc. etc. It was a half solution.

Daniel, I just searched, and there are no threads or posts by username Dee (though Dee exists) - it looks like a "banned" situation but since we can't search for user profiles or members here I can't tell.

I am really being hosed by the new medication - I'm this close to stopping it. I'm sleeping or too groggy to do anything but lie down WAY too much of the time - and in intervals as well. I'm going to spread out the interval I take it and perhaps cut back on the dosage to see if that helps.

Plan on being here while I'm alert today - I have a few threads I'm a little behind on because they need some serious research and are tough hardware questions where device drivers and System Restore didn't do the trick. I even got another reminder "bump" post on one just a little while ago. BTW, special thanks to Richard, Josh, Richard, derekimo, and Jacee for help on the thread I was having trouble with yesterday - unfortunately, it still isn't solved though we ruled out quite a few things (I'm still not sure what to suggest but a clean install - per Jacee - but I KNOW the OP isn't going to go for that).

I like this new skin a lot. It seems more like EF and not as plain as the regular one. Thanks again, John - and thanks for the tutorial on skins and how to change them - I had no idea.

And I've said it before, but asullivan, you are a true madman - and it's great. I loved your recent shots of warplanes.

Well, back to it after a bit more time in Chillum threads.

Well, back to it after a bit more time in Chillum threads.

I know! I got some warplanes dedicated to me! Good luck with your medication. I hope it goes alright.

I am actually getting a little fed up with that thread. She wanted to fix it, to learn from it. We already know that the root cause is such deep registry damage that it cannot be fixed. By the time we are creating new user accounts, we are not learning anything. She may well be infected. Her registry is seriously corrupted, she has another thread over at TSF (although that is actually helping not hindering at the moment. Don't mention it at the moment. I need to discuss this with her, as they said her bcdedit was fine. I have less experience, so they might have just saved here. IMO, just rebuild it)

We are now contending with BSoDs, and various other issues. She PMs me like once every two days. I feel like blocking here. She always sends me two PMs, exactly the same each time.

I just want her to reinstall, as I suggested when I first saw her registry.

Ah well!

The amazing thing about being an admin is that you could upgrade others to admin! [quickly goes and checks VF friendship status with Smurffy] (possibly before getting banned yourself!)

And here's the proof below. I'm still trying to figure out what the site is all about. In the forums, there seem to be more threads about banning and unbanning and reporting than about real topics. I had a hard time understanding many of the rules - probably because I haven't played the game - and all the different levels of being dinged (1, 2, or 3) are hard to figure out and understand the ramifications of each. It seems like there must be some sort of game you can play, but I haven't figured out how to get there yet (and I'm really bad with online games - unless, of course, you dare to try me at Chess or Pente!). Seems like a lot of Admins for 889 members (including me who doesn't count). Do you have Supermods and mods too? I'll check it out more later when I have time.

I've never been an Admin, but I was a Super Mod for New Line Cinema's Blade forums (all 3 of them - now all closed) and it was fun, but to do it right was a lot of work - especially being alone and the Admins didn't participate unless I had a site problem. I eventually promoted a few regulars to Mods to assist me (actually only 2 at any one time) so we could split the duty of reviewing posts (but I still pretty much looked at everything anyway just to be sure). No compensation, but they did send me about a dozen DVD movies for free and I got an official poster signed by J. Michael Straczynski (which is still in the delivery container) and got to talk to Wesley Snipes - so that was cool.

********************************

Changing the timing of the medication REALLY helped - by taking the doses closer together but all near bedtime, I solved the daytime grogginess and actually slept reasonably well (though I just awoke at 12:30AM for a few hours here before hopefully catching a few more hours of sleep before starting the day - hoping the day hasn't already started since that's probably not enough sleep and I'll burn out in the mid-afternoon).

*********************************

I was able to catch up on a lot of threads yesterday (and add to existing threads in a few forums) since it seems like we didn't get very many new posts (I doubt it was more than a half dozen but I don't check every single forum - but based on last post timing that seemed accurate). I don't have access to identify how many new members join on any particular day (though I suppose if I looked at the totals I could calculate it if I wanted), but I'll bet there weren't many yesterday. I hope this is mostly due to the holiday season. On the other hand, many people will get new computers for Christmas and that probably means more people moving from Vista to W7 - but hopefully volumes wlll still pick up after the holidays when people have more time to deal with such things (and of course some will have upgrades they got as gifts (software and/or hardware) they'll need help with.

I was pleased to see a lot of friends and most of the regulars online yesterday - even if some of them didn't post very much (but some did for a change, giving me an opportunity to finally acknowledge their contributions - at least a couple of them) or did so primarily if only in Chillum. Most (but not all) of my friends are Gurus, so I know the skill is there - and even the most thorough replies are sometimes missing something that might be useful or valuable (or peripherally related but possibily useful to the OP and overlooked by the responder who may be focusing only on the issue and miss an opportunity to provide helpful information that is related even if it doesn't directly answer the question). Adding a post with this may assist the OP if not with the question but in general.

For example, if an OP is having an installation problem and mentions a low amount of available space, the original responder may address the installation problem but only skim over the space problem. Providing space-saving information may be useful even if it has nothing to do with resolving the installation problem. I just did that recently on one post and was thanked by the OP (which made me happy even if I got no rep possibly since it didn't address the question).

Also, you may see an unresolved thread where it's clear that the primary responder is having trouble or struggling or trying a variety of options (which often means struggling) - or maybe there hasn't been a response in a while because the thread got forgotten or the responder had nothing more to add and was stuck (these will almost always have the last post coming from the OP). These are opportunities to reply with a fresh set of eyes and a new perspective and perhaps something suggested or asked will either help resolve the problem or assist the original responder with a fresh approach and get the thread active again so we can resolve the OP's problem/question (this time as a team where the chances of success are increased).

With the low volumes we're having at the moment, these are ways to still post and be active in the forum and assist the OPs. I know the skills are there. Working in teams is almost always better for the OP and solves the problem quicker (or at least provides the OP with more options). Just because a good answer is already posted doesn't mean something else can't be added to assist the OP even more (though sometimes, it's best to wait until the OP responds to that answer before becoming involved as some do cover the issue rather completely - both short answers (maybe just a link) or long ones (perhaps a set of procedures to try and then reply with results)). I sometimes subscribe to such threads even though they aren't "mine" to see the replies and if I can add anything at that
point.

Well, I'm off to see what I can contribute today - after a few more stops in Chillum to add a new song and perhaps post elsewhere. It's usually my first stop after checking alerts and before hitting the other forums.

Yupp, that's me!
It should be changing soon to [CH]McFlurry.
The game is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with the MultiPlayer mod. *SA:MP*
When I join the server, I have to log on as admin, then I get access to godmode, admin weapons, admin vehicles, loads of stuff. I can also see what commands players are using, /v faggio or /nitro for example. I can also watch players that I think are cheating and can ban if they are.
If a user is banned, they can make a ban appeal to try and get unbanned, if it was hacks and there's evidence, then they will not get unbanned.
It might seem alot of admins, but there's that amount so there can always be an admin on the game to stop the cheaters/hackers.

It's really cool! Last night there was a massive stunt night, everyone was asked to spawn to a set position by the admins and then spawn a vehicle, it was a laugh actually.
I had to leave part way through, Just looking through some pics now.

Glad you're feeling better too, I'm still feeling bad lol, I've got 2 days to get rid of this cough/cold/sore throat before I got to my grandparents for Xmas Day, It'd be cool if I could...

I have two monitors! I play Call of Duty: Black Ops & Modern Warfare II - Both on PC. Contact me through my website: ChaseKurry.com

Ahaa, right, thanks ;)

Well, I just finished skimming over the 15 or so pages about a little rascal doing the no, no one his home computer....

Mom asked why should one have to be a computer genius to control her youngster.....:sarc:

You see gents I come from a far off place, a forum such as this....But this forum I come from is for law enforcement professionals.....

Ya'll show extreme patience and help, with mom, with me, with everybody who cares to listen. I like that but again computers are your forte...:)....

I'll be quite frank, Where I came from there would have been a total different reaction if a parent generically speaking came on and asked "what can I do as a parent from keeping little Johnny from outwitting me and surfing, downloading things that are not good or downright illegal " Little Johnny is not doing as I say", "I cannot trust him"..., What should I do??

Was your advice and suggestions helpful and positive? Yes indeed totally, quite appropriate, indeed, for this environment (read Vista forms)....

Now, To put a spin on the solution, or to look at this from another angle of attack on this type of misbehavior or recidivism of a no, no....the reply would have been something of this nature from the other forum.....

"One more warning, the next time little Johnny would be spitting out IC's for a month, no T.V, no friends over, double duty chores, No nothing until proven otherwise"...:D
Then it would probably ended something like this....
"looks like Mommy, daddy or whomever has the same lack of judgement and understanding of responsibility and consequences for ones actions, as the child".

Now I will say this, when little Johnny becomes of age and hasn't thought about these things we call consequences, thats when he will meet people like me...Where "pull the wool over ones eyes" stops in it's tracks, and reality sets in fast.....Do the above words seems harsh?.. Of course they do, but gentlemen that is the real deal, reality....It's a very unfortunate landscape...Where another languge is spoken and inappropriate actions are used that are considered appropriate....

I commend ya'll greatly on your help with her, and consequently Lil Johnny, its a tough road sometimes.....but again real. I'd put good money on a bet that it will be of benefit to whom it matters the most.;)

I read something in there that Sire Smurfyy had said... He mentioned he was 15 years of age....It was not his age, but what he said that caught my attention. If all the young people showed the maturity and intel of Smurfyy our world would be a whole lot better than its is going to be, I'm afraid....:(

Please understand, I do understand what adults are facing in these days, but if we are intellecually honest with ourselfs, things have not changed that much at all, really. These challenges are just different thats all, IMHO...

Instead of worring about little johnny getting lockjaw or getting run over by a farm tractor we worry about his computer getting infected or getting mugged in front of his school...

In closing, please believe me when I say I am not pointing my finger at anybody in paticular, no one at all , I would be a complete hyprocrite if I did!,:o it is just the way it is now....but us as adult are and should be the light at there feet....:)

One thing is for sure, you guys have patience of saints...Particular if ya' can put up with trigger and I...:p

As it's really just my wife and I (and our two cats) as normal - family is far away and we don't see each other often (but will call) - and neither of us care much for Christmas shows on TV, I expect it to be a fairly normal day here (except for even more unusually low volumes and participation in VF).

Richard, you may have a valid reason to show up for that BSOD, but we both know you would have checked in at some point anyway - I simply can't imagine otherwise.

But still, Merry Christmas to everyone and all your family and friends. If I don't see you here tomorrow (or do so only for a short time), then I'll most certainly understand why. If anything comes up on any of your threads, I'll try to reply if I can (and understand the situation enough not to mess things up - LOL!!).

Sully, were you local, state, or federal LEO? I've never really known one (and never met one in anything other than a speeding ticket or one for failing to wear my seatbelt). Nothing personal, I have nothing against these people who protect us (though I think I can do a pretty good job myself and better if not for the weaponry laws in Maryland), but getting involved means being involved in some type of incident (even if only as a witness) and I'd just a soon not have to face any of those. And while these parents may not have been as strict as you'd like (or maybe as was needed), at least they were trying to do something and that's more than way too many others these days. In my own youth, I only remember being punished once - I was actually a pretty good kid and easy to control (possibly too easy as I made up for lost time once i got to college).
