ReBoot Time

Yes I can. Problem is in the shutdown. Startup is more likely normal (atleast I think my comp startups pretty fast). When I press the 'shutdown' button it takes like 40-120sec before it goes to the screen which says 'logging out; vista is shutting down'. Before that it just stays on the desktop and it seems nothing is happening. Is there a possibility to check which program is the one that causes these problems?

Yeeeeeesss!
Can you determine whether the greatest lag is in the shutdown or startup part of the test?
Shutdowns can be made quicker with a registry tweak and Quick Shutdown icon on your desktop. But boot times can take a bit more work. That requires that you decrease the number of things loading, starting and running at boot.

Yup............300 is definitely a bit long.:o

Well, you have a choice.......
You can spend your time trying to determine which program is causing your shutdown delay or you can just 'Kill them all' and be done with it.

Before doing the "KILL" routine, it might be helpful to minimize (eliminate) what you've got running in the background.

Almost all of the PC's that are already installed and running for a while, that I have to work on, are loaded with 'Updaters', 'Schedulers', and 'Reminders' that my customer doesn't even need.
In most cases they don't even know where they came from.
The Microsoft Messenger is a good example of things that start and run even though the user doesn't even know what it is, nor do they ever use it.

In "MSCONFIG" (under the Startup tab) most of those little resource suckers can be DE-Selected, so they don't start and run every time the PC is booted up.
This step is critical in making any PC start, run and shutdown more efficiently.

Then I use a two-fold approach to a quicker shutdown.
First I tweak the registry to quicken the shutdown time.
Then I make a Quick Shutdown Icon for the desktop.

This has all been discussed before in other threads.

Yes well that is the funny part.. I have already killed many of the 'useless' services and programmes from startup. I didn't notice any difference. So there have to be one program which is causing this.. :/ And I also have tried this one but nothing noticable did happen.

I also tried this one with this setting 2 seconds (2000). And again I didn't notice any difference.

My comp hasn't always been this slowly at boot. It started a month or two ago.

Best regards,
T

Hi, Mr GRiM.

I went through many of the steps. I skipped the steps that I thought was meaningless for my problem. Like I said my boot-problems start accidentally and not because my comp can't handle vista's features and services.

The Virtual Memory Paging was already disabled (0) and I assume that's what it should be?

I'm really really desperate about this thing.. ;_;

Best regards,
T

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me! I just solved the problem. It wasn't that nasty as I thought.. :o

I don't know why or how but my comp had deleted all the nvidia drives (ex. display drivers) and that was causing high bootup times. My reboot time decreased from 300s to 79 seconds!

Sincerely,
Eksotik

Excellent script and tool.

Mine took 222 seconds to boot.

Forgot to take a screenie.... soz.

And that's after a clean install.

But, I've noticed that one of my external hdd's causes a hang, is there anything that can be done with that?

Apart from unplugging and plugging it back in constantly of course! :D

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

We must have been thinking the same thing at the same time, as that is exactly what I done after writing this.

Still not much difference though, it's still around 200 secs.. I will fiddle around and see what's what.

Thanks again.

Hello everyone, first of all I have run into this great site by chance during my excessive search to reduce vista boot time. I have vista pre-installed on my machine when I bought it about 5 months ago. At first everything was normal no problems with startup performance and general responsiveness of Vista. I use Vista Business 32 bit edition have SP1 installed. I have used the program written to measure how long it takes to reboot and got 106 seconds. However, after this time windows explorer crashes a couple of times and it takes another minute or two until Kaspersky AV 6.0 and ATI CCC start. I have done a lot of tweaking IMO and don't want to reinstall Vista. How can I overcome the crashes I experience at startup and the very long boot time. My Vista also shows a great deal of lag sometimes when doing non system intensive tasks such as browsing the Net. I have installed system maintenance utilities but they showed little to no effect. Can this problem is cause of installing uninstalling a lot of programs? :(
My System Specifications:
CPU: Intel C2D E 8400 3 GHZ
MOBO:Asus Rampage Formula
RAM: DDR 2 Corsair 4GB Dual Kit 800Mhz
GPU: Powercolor Radeon HD 4870x2 2GB (Driver ATI Catalyst 8.12)
HD:500 GB X2 RAID 0

Thanks for help.

Hello TMM,

Since this happens at startup, I would see if you could boot into Safe Mode witout any problems. If you can, then temporarily disable all of the startup programs and enable one one of them at a time and restart the computer until you find out which one or more is the culprit. Then uninstall the culprit and continue testing the rest of them. If it's a driver responsible, then see if there is a newer version to install instead.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Afterwards, you can try the items in this tutorial to help improve your computer's performance some more.

Hello TMM,

I would say that it seems Kaspersky may be at issue here since it is the one loading slowly.

As a test uninstall it completely, and use the free program Avast antivirus for now, to see how you run afterwards. Other than that, you will need to go through your startup programs as described in my post above.
