If you're like me and have gotten into the habit of converting DVDs to DivX or XVid for use with Media Center, and have been struggling to find a good free utility to enable the task, then you might want to have a look at HandBrake.
It's available in both GUI (Graphical User Interface) and CLI (Command Line Interface) versions, and has some really advanced facilities. The most important of which (for me anyay) is the ability to specify the target file size so that 2-pass encoding can give the best quality video.
And if you want to learn how to use the CLI version, the GUI version has a one-button click option to generate the command line parameters according to your current settings.
Version 0.9.3 can also do format conversions.
