Solved DVD reading error

I assume you have a SATA -SCSI converter since you are using sata drives- Have you tried using another optical drive to see if you have the same issue? could be something as simple as a bad optical drive.

problem, i haven't got another optical drive. Only one, and thats the TSST driver.
And if SATA -SCSI is a cord (or whatever you spell it) then yes, my drivers work, its just the optical driver that doesn't read Games for Windows games

well that could be a Microsoft Visual C++ issue, as all my Games for Windows both updated to 2005 Redistributable before they loaded.

sorry to go over old ground but have you changed the drive in question or tried to re seat the existing one..??

im not sure what conclusion you two have reached.?? is there a problem with the HDD also..??

He was under the impression his raptor hdd drive was his optical drive, and apparently his samsung optical drive will not see or run certain game dvds. He has no other optical drives to switch it with, and we were trying to reinstall device drivers for his SATA-SCSI optical to see if that resolved the issue.
It is peculiar that only Games for Windows cannot be seen or run by his dvd optical drive.

the problem is that my computer just can't autorun them, it can't read them at all, so far its just my "Games for Windows" games that isn't read, All my other games seems to work fine.

can't be that, just updated it first to 2005, no change on neither DVDs, and then to 2008. that didn't work either.

ok...... so if i understand this you have had some games working through this drive, but others wont work..??

this is probably a really silly question but your sure your drive is a DVD-ROM & not a CD-ROM, this would explain not being able to read the newer discs...

have you checked the device manager, is the drive there, is the driver for the component functional..??, if not can you roll it back..??

i used to have a similar problem with MOH Airborne, the disc made the clicking sound & would not be detected by autorun, i found it was infact the disc itself causing the problem, i have never found a cure for it....... this may also be what your suffering from, if other DVD's run without issue its a strong possibility.

pics would help us see what you see (or what you don't see) ;) but as rive0108 has stated you shouldn't touch the inside of this machine if you have some kind of technical support package, just let them deal with it...

Thats a good point.
Look close at your game disks- Are some CD's and other DVDs? Are only the dvds not being read? If that is the case your optical drive is either not able to read dvds, or due to some falure with software/hardware prevented from reading dvds if it is a DVD-RW.
(look under "Computer" is the drive listed as CD-+R/CD-+RW or DVD-+R/DVD-+RW?)

Try this as apparently the samsung SH-S223Q optical drive is a DVD rewritable, and should be able to read the dvds:
You may have a defective drive, If this firmware doesnt work, I would definitely call tech support. Your drive may need replacement.

Yes it is DVD compitable, it runs Call Of duty 4 and Battlefield 2.
its DVD RW so it should run the games, but why is only Games for Windows games the ones that won't work? that beats me...

Try cleaning the dvd lense, download and install the firware update I linked above, and if all fails to resolve your problem replace the drive under warranty, chances are it is failing.

One other thing, check performance monitor, check for errors/failures.

MANY errors but most of them gta_sa.exe and explorer.exe. GTA crashes because of mods, explorer on the other hand I don't know.

I think its a corrupted file somewhere, every time I boot, my internet security block a Trojan even when internet is off,Windows Live Messenger or explorer.exe crashes and stop working, (I have to start MSN myslef again) and I get a RunDLL error

Maybe you should just do a fresh reformat/reinstall of Vista, reload all your drivers, download all Windows updates, and see if you still have the dvd read problem. At that point itll either fix the issue, or determine that your optical drive needs replacement due to hardware failure.
We are spending alot of time on this, and by now you could already have finished a fresh install, and determined whether your drive or scsi card is bad and contacted tech support for repair/replacement.
With the Trojan, and Windows component failures, and probable Windows file corruption, nothing short of a destructive reformat/reinstall is required to fix your issues. Invest in a good Antivirus- I use and recommend NOD32 3.0
Good luck.

With the info regarding your program crashes, trojan infection, and dvd read issue I have come to the conclusion that your issue is probably not hardware related.
Your Vista installation is severely compromised with viruses, malware, and file corruption.
If you cannot boot into the Vista O/S disk, then thats a serious problem that goes far beyond just games for windows dvds, and can be a result of malware.
Have you tried placing the dvd in the drive, restarting, and seeing if It tries to boot off disk? (you will have to hit any key at prompt to boot into disk).
If you do boot into disk, DELETE existing partition and reinstall. Follow the Prompts for installation. Or take your system to a friend, or store and let them reformat/reinstall for you.

test this...
if you can boot of your vista dvd then its not hardware related... [as windows needs to read files from the DVD to boot into the Vista install PE (Pre-installation Environment) ]

if you have all you files saved then reformat your HDD during the setup (like again you have to boot from the dvd...)

check if you have the lasest firmware
have you checked rive's post on the firmware link?

I don't think booting of the DVD worked, but it was a change, none of the stuff came up, first a screen, then an empty prompt then Vista suddenly popped up,

yes, I downloaded and installed the firmware from the link.

You need to reinstall. Try system restore from the furthest restore point available so that you can boot from the disk, then do a destructive reformat and reinstallation.
If you want, I will remote you, and try to get your system cleaned up to the point you can reinstall, but you need to change your language to English.
