I'm running Vista 64-Bit, this update got hung up upon reboot and login.

After ten+ mins. & hardly any disk activity, decided to perform a system restore.

Could not find any information about this update, no change-log and no information why the update is "Important".

Try uninstalling and reinstalling MSE.

I need to first figure out what the update is and what improvements there are over the previous version.

Welcome to Vista Forums albertz. Your post last night was the first I heard of this program update for MSE. As you have found, Microsoft does not post documentation for MSE updates. On the one hand, it is generally a good idea to keep security software up to date. On the other hand, the previous version 4.8.204.0 (KB3063917, May 2015) was recognized as a tremendous improvement (see http://www.vistax64.com/vista-news/304320-windows-defender-improves-new-antivirus-test.html).

I have found that Windows Defender for 8 and 10 - which by all accounts is almost identical to MSE - received an update 4.9.10586.0 at least 3 months ago. Interestingly, the Engine Version (1.1.12400.0) and Network Inspection Engine Version (2.1.11804.0) are exactly the same as MSE 4.8, which seems to suggest that 4.9 is not a major advance. As far as I know, no independent lab has conducted tests featuring Windows Defender 4.9 yet.

Since you have experienced difficulty with the update, I have decided to delay installing it for now. I have checked Seven Forums, but so far there are no reports similar to yours. If I decide to install 4.9, I will post here about any changes in the GUI. The previous version can be downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=5201. [Edit] Link leads to MSE 4.9 as of April 15, 2016.

Hi
I have Vista Business 32 bit and I have had exactly the same problem after installing MSE 4.9.218.0 (KB3140527). I eventually had to do a system restore and then everything has worked fine. I am concerned about what I might be "missing" if I just ignore this update.

Have just switched my computer back on and had the same problem - had to system restore again.
I tried running Microsoft Fixit and this has been unable to correct the following:
1. Windows Update error 0x8024402c(2016-02-25-T-05_12_46P
2. Problems installing recent updates.

Not sure where to go with this now.

You can try the System Update Readiness tool https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821 which is essentially a standalone Windows update installer that verifies your current Windows Update installation, when having Windows Update errors.

My Windows update does not produce any errors. All the past Window Vista 64-Bit updates have been successful.

My problem after installing KB3140527, Windows Desktop would not load after login. The login screen eventually turned black and the login was not successful.

As soon as there is some sort of KB3140527 update description I may attempt another installation either by re-installing MSE or using the System Update Readiness tool.

Other options include running chkdsk on your Windows Vista installtion drive and/or using Windows System File Checker (SFC /scannow) from the command line.

Thanks for your reply Albertz.

All my previous Windows Vista 32-bit updates had been successful. It's only been since I installed the KB3140527 that I've had the problem of Windows desktop not loading and the screen turning black.

I will try what you suggest and see what happens.

Grateful for all help as I can't keep using System Restore every time I turn the computer on!

REMOVE MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS V4.9.218.0 IMMEDIATELY!
This new version is causing major problems on Windows Vista & Windows 7 computers, possibly making the MSE program unusable.

On the "standalone" Microsoft Security Essentials downloads page, they are still offering
version 4.8.204.0 and NOT the newer version.

So remove v4.9.218.0 of MSE and revert back to using v4.8.204.0.

That's even a better idea ... I would just ignore the update as suggested. If a previously working Windows Update isn't able install an update then just don't try installing an update until more update information is available.

Well I have hidden the update, but the number of problem reports still seems fairly small for an update released two days ago.

A question for those who have actually seem this problem: Did you also install the optional KB3118401 (published February 15)?

No.

I remember thinking about installing a Windows 10 Universal CRT, some time ago, not certain if it's the same one. After reading various programming and developer related discussions decided not to, since it's an optional update.

If a requirement for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.9.218.0 then it should be listed along with the MSE update, or a notice that's it's prerequisite to be installed prior to MSE 4.9.218.0, which should be provided with a detailed description.

(KB3118401 description)
The Windows 10 Universal CRT is a Windows operating system component that enables CRT functionality on the Windows operating system. This update allows Windows desktop applications that depend on the Windows 10 Universal CRT release to run on earlier Windows operating systems.

I am running Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium 32-bit Version 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002.18005 and I have had the same problem. After entering my log in password the desktop fails to load. I have restored three times from a rescue disc. I have MSE 4.8.204.0 as follows:

Antimalware Client Version: 4.8.204.0
Engine Version: 1.1.12400.0
Antivirus definition: 1.213.7264.0
Antispyware definition: 1.213.7264.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 2.1.11804.0
Network Inspection System Definition Version: 115.35.0.0

I had previously installed KB3118401.
