Yet Another Quicktime / Itunes....Windows Installer Package Problem!

OK,
Have downloaded QT as suggested.
Ran the program as administrator and it has accepted it.

On clicking the iTunes desktop icon it starts to configure iTunes and seems to get further than before, then the "missing files" message re-appears.

I've now tried running Q/T independently.
A left click produces a "windows cannot access..." message.

To try and rectify this I went into: c>prog files>QuickTime and adjusted permissions to everyone.

Another run of Q/T by right clicking and running as Admin, still produces the "windows cannot access...".
Also when right clicking the Q/T desktop icon, the mouse icon (blue circle) freezes and the menu bar takes appx 20sec to appear.

(The "error applying security" appeared whilst trying to adjust permissions).

Hi,

I have included a little program that will remove all permissions from a folder or drive. DO NOT misuse this program. ( << No offence, I have to include this) What you need to do is:

  • Download the small program and put it on your desktop.

  • Start Command Prompt.

  • Navigate to your desktop ("cd C:\Users\{Account Name}\Desktop" and press enter)

  • Type "Takeown.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime" and press enter. There is a space after takeown.exe.

  • Right click on your "C:\Program Files\QuickTime" directory and give full access to EVEYONE. If this does not work, you can try it from Safe Mode.
Richard

NB: The .exe and the .exe in the .zip file is the same.

Hi Richard,
First off thanks very much for your efforts so far in trying to resolve my problem!

Please see attached screenprint of the cmd page. As you can see, I've tried a few permutations, but it doesn't seem to like any of them! (I have downloaded the takeown.exe and placed it on my desktop).

Am I misunderstanding your instructions?

Hello,

I am so sorry. There are two commands to use to go to your Desktop:

cd %userprofile%\Desktop
cd C:\Users\Kev\Desktop

Sorry that I confused you with {Account Name}

Also, it looks like Command Prompt/takeown.exe is interpreting the space as an escape character, so use this:

cd %userprofile%\Desktop
Takeown.exe C:\"Program Files"\QuickTime\*

The * symbolises everything in that directory. Sorry again,

Richard

Hi Richard,
No need for apologies!

This is what I've done thus far:
Downloaded both the files you posted, extracted the zip and put it on the desktop, and also put the other downloaded file on the desktop.

I using the cmd prompt then keyed in what I thought were the right scripts (pls see attached) !

Hello,

I have just tried using takeown.exe on the QuickTime folder and failed (with a very different error ) Anyway, for now we will store this knowledge and continue on. Can you please run and repair your iTunes install using the iTunes + QuickTime installer? Since iTunes says that it is missing components, and QuickTime is fine, we will have to reinstall and see what the next error message is.

I am really sorry that this is dragging on and on. I have dealt with these issues before, but nothing half as bad as this.

Hi Richard,
I've downloaded the iTunes / QTime package and run as a repair.

The iTunes successfully installed message appears so I clicked on finish.

I then clicked on the desktop iTunes icon, and the configuring program initiates.
Interestingly I never see any mention of Quicktime in the above processes.

After about a minute or so the missing files message re-appears!

I then went to the Quicktime installer setup and ran that as a repair, it to installed successsfully.

I tried the iTunes icon again but still the "missing files appeared"!

Hello,

Sorry for my late reply. I have been thinking about this, and I am currently trying to work out where all the iTunes files are stored. Anyway, I cannot see why deleting them would fix it, but you have got nothing to lose.

If you don't know Apple, they make a new release, such as 9.1, and then they quietly make a second 9.1 release in a few days to fix all the bugs they had "forgotten about". I imagine that this install issue was a bug, and they were quietly telling people to get the next version of that same release, and delete the old, bugging installers! But it is worth a try.

I also do not think you need a more powerful machine. It sounds very much like a corruption, and I am racking my brains as to where it is. Will respond soon.

Richard

Hello Richard,

I used CCleaner to remove safari/iTunes/QuickTime.

(As an aside I was going to use windows installer clean up, I ran the program as Admin which seemingly installed & configured correctly, but on completion of install the program did not open?! No error messages etc. Hence I went on to use CCleaner).

With these deleted I then went on to download anew, iTunes/Quicktime from the apple site. The first sign of a problem was when the old friend “there is a problem with the windows installer package” re-appeared.

The install rolled back and continued to install Q/T.

Although having both icons on the desktop, clicking on itunes produces a privilege error, this is (not surprisingly!), swiftly followed by the fatal error message.

Tried adjusting priviliges as previous, but on re-running iTunes the same "installer has.." appears!

Hello,

What happens when you try to run "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe directly, rather than using the shortcut? Also, can you send me the size (not size on disk) of these folders:

"C:\Program Files\iTunes"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple"

Thanks!

OK,
I ran C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe direct (as a repair) and get the same response as above with the "ack" error message.

Folder sizes attached......

Just out of interest I ran QT direct as Admin and it produced the error below.

Hello,

My sizes will be slightly different from yours, but my iTunes works fine, and your sizes are excessively low. I am less worried by the Apple folder. Your iTunes folder looks OK, but is far too small.

Thought I'd try again to uninstall apple contents using CCleaner.
Removed apple application support & apple mobile device & bonjour & itunes.

Rebooted and reinstalled itunes.

When it came to installing iTunes this time, the "windows installer package" error appeared, and at the Q/T installation "the installer has insufficient priviliges blah blah for ack.rtf" stated its case!

Should the towel be taken off the stool in readiness to throw into the ring I ask myself?!!

Hello,

Very sorry for my late reply, and you always have permission to send me a PM. I somehow accidentally dropped this thread from my to-do list. I think a reinstall would fix the problem, as this is very much a corrupt operating system/iTunes-QuickTime issue. There is no point in me accessing your computer, because you are very tech minded and so I am holding nothing back. I do not really know what to do at this point either. You could try nagging Apple, but I doubt a customer support person would get you much further.

If you are willing to take this leap, you could try a non-destructive repair install, though the chances are this will not fix your issue. Also, you need to have an SP2 disk, or slipstream your disk to SP2. This is a very fiddly and complicated process and takes hours and hours as it is. I can continue to try and fix it, but I will tell you now, I am out of ideas and it is only if I think of something in the meantime. However, a clean install/factory restore would almost certainly fix the issue. You would however have to back up all of your data. If you tell me your computer manufacturer, I will give you instructions for a factory recover. The only advantage of a factory recover over a CD install is speed and some drivers are reinstalled, nothing else.

I am really sorry that I have not managed to solve your issue. It is now down to you on what you want to do. I am really sorry. :(

Hi again!

I'm seriously thinking about running the system recovery disks. However, before I do, I'd like to run a couple of things by you as I've not had to do this before.

The computer is an Acer Aspire 8930 T5800 Duo Processor. When I first bought it I compiled the recovery disks. A few days later a few pixels blackened so I took it back and it was replaced. I didn't redo the recovery disks with it being an exact same laptop. So can I still use them?

Secondly, other than some photos, a couple of docs, and a game (all of which I gather I can just put onto my external hard drive as an interim measure and then transfer over later?), I can't immediately think of anything crucial I'd need, is there anything else I should consider saving?

I also run McAfee, which I gather I'll need to reinstall from the McAfee site as well.
Thanks,
Kev.

Hello,

To use the Recovery partition on Acer Aspire computers (no DVD required):

Hard Disk Recovery should be enabled by default. If it is not, you may need to go into your system’s BIOS by hitting F2 at boot and enable it under the Advanced tab.
Once Hard Disk Recovery is enabled, restart the system and hit ALT+F10. This will begin the Aspire system recovery process. You will be prompted to type six zeros as a security step. Type 000000 to proceed.
Sometimes it is Ctrl-F10. This is the recommended method. The Recovery Disks should work fine, however, if you have any problems with activation online (in theory you should have no problems), active by freephone. Sometimes there are problems with OEM activation, but if you make the effort to phone up, Microsoft assume you are legitimate and activate anyway, so activate by phone if online isn't working.

The docs and photos can be put on your external hard disk just fine (check some random few to make sure they are copied properly, make sure you copy them and don't create shortcuts, unplug the hard disk before recovering your computer, that way nothing can go wrong.

However, the game and McAfee will need to be reinstalled (do not just copy them back) They contain many registry entries and files in other places, and so cannot just be copied. Make sure you have the license codes for both before recovery. If you don't know your product codes, try the free Magical Jellybean Keyfinder. The product code shown by McAfee IS NOT your product key. Magical Jelly Bean Software - Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1

Good luck!

Richard

Hi Richard,
A couple more questions!
"Hard Disk Recovery should be enabled by default." How do I access this? Is it via control panel?

Also, I've noted the cd key for the game! And also the details to re-install McAfee.

With regards microsoft, I do have the OEM product code, but I do not seem to have a disc for vista - is this right? Or should I be busy looking for it?! And if I have problems, is this the correct microsoft number I should ring to activate it,0800-096 0137? Or do you know another one that I should be using?

Sorry to be a pain but having never done one, I'm a little jumpy about the system recovery! And am trying to be prepared with correct discs & contact details/websites before the event! (Which will probably be over the next few days I reckon!).
Thanks,
Kev.
Hello,

No problem asking questions. It is better to ask questions than make a mistake! BTW: Congratulations on your new badge! :) Hard Disk Recovery should already be enabled, and since you don't know how to access it, you probably haven't disabled it! Only try to enable it if hard disk recovery is failing. So that you know, you switch off the computer, turn it on, and on the very first BIOS screen, you repeatedly press F2 to open the BIOS settings. You then navigate using the keyboard only to Advanced Settings, and then you change the setting from Disabled to Enabled. You then Exit and Save and restart. All done!

To recover an OS, there are three methods: insert your Windows CD, insert your Recovery CD, use a Recovery partition.

If you bought a retail OS (which you haven't in this case) you insert the CD that your just bought and install Windows using it. Sometimes manufacturers supply you with an OEM CD when you buy your computer, but this is nice and rare.

However, there is always an option to make your own Windows CD. That is the Recovery CD you made. Your home made Recovery CD is a Windows CD, just without the pretty, swirling patterns! To test this if you are still worried, put it in your computer, shut down your computer, boot from the CD, and you should get the option to enter keyboard and language then install Vista or repair your computer. Don't worry, there are many, many setup steps and confirms to make, there is not the slightest chance of accidentally reinstalling Vista!

Recovery Partition: All modern computers come with something called a Recovery Partition. This is often D:\ or does not show up at all. If you look in Disk Management, it will show up as the EISA Configuration. Do not worry about this 9and do not ever delete it!) If you want, you boot into this partition using a special key combination given by your manufacturer and this will return your computer to what it was the day your bought it. This will reinstall most drivers and your OS, and because Read/Write is much faster to your hard disk than DVD drive, it will sometimes install 2-3 times faster. This is the best method. I have explained earlier on how to do this for your machine:

Hard Disk Recovery should be enabled by default. If it is not, you may need to go into your system’s BIOS by hitting F2 at boot and enable it under the Advanced tab.
Once Hard Disk Recovery is enabled, restart the system and hit ALT+F10. This will begin the Aspire system recovery process. You will be prompted to type six zeros as a security step. Type 000000 to proceed.
Sometimes it is Ctrl+F10.

Sorry, I do not know the activation phone number off hand, but do not worry. When reinstalling an OEM Vista, the product key and Activation is often kept and not required, but if not, AND online activation is failing once Vista has been installed, then choose the Activate by phone method and you will be told the current number. Do not worry about keeping a copy of this number, you usually have 30 days until activation, which is usually not required, and can be extended to 90 days legally, but the number does ring a vague bell.

Basically, back up your files, unplug external hard disk, press Alt+F10 immediately at boot up, follow on screen instructions, do not worry about activation.

Richard

At this moment in time the reinstall is underway......

Prior to commencing I clicked on F2 on booting up and navigated to D2d Recovery, I couldn't see H/D recovery but gathered it was one of the same.
As you rightly said, by default it was set as enabled!

Restarted- pressed Alt F10 and it is now installing updates 35/45.....

I somehow doubt this will be my last posting! But when everything is up and running, I gather it will be ok to go straight for the jugular and download iTunes & QT as one from the apple site?
Kev

ps. Within the last few minutes, a few auto restarts, and mucho holdo breatho later, the re-install completed itself, and I am now back online! (The earlier part of this post was from the iTouch).
