Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Build 16489

Microsoft has begun testing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and intends to ship this release in the second quarter of 2009. Note that there are no new features in SP2; this is a more typical service pack that aggregates previously-released fixes. Worked great in XP with zero problems. In fact, that was the recommended way of doing it. You're saying that's not the case with Vista?

I was an XP SP2 beta tester and never used Safe Mode for installation, although I see from a Google Search that some people were recommending it at that time. It's been so long I've almost forgotten those days.
I certainly didn't see anyone recommending it for XP SP3.

I don't think I've seen anyone recommending it for Vista, not sure it would even work.

Where is it stated, especially by Microsoft, to install service packs in safe mode? This is the first i've heard of it as well, and i've instaled a few service packs myself, including SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista, neither of which was done in "safe mode"!

I've been fixing and installing windows since Win1.0 and never even heard of installing anything in safe mode. Sounds like a noob tale.

But 2008 SP2 couldn't complete!

Vista SP2 RTM hasn't even been released. Only the RC (Release Candidate) is available right now. Sure you aren't confusing it with Office 2007 SP2 or Office Servers SP2 which were released today?

For SP's generally it's a good idea to disable anti-virus first.

Forgeries. They have to be if Microsoft Technet doesn't even have anything but the RC.

Sorry but I would be extremely leery of anything you find on a torrent. Even if it is genuine the best it can be is the"Release Candidate" i.e. RC build, not the RTM build.

I refuse to trust bit torrents. I have missed out on a few free MMOs as they distribute their executable that way. But so be it.

The Seven Forums have already reported a trojan hitting several people who downloaded the Win 7 RC torrent.

There were times when XP SP3 gave me trouble installing. Said there was a problem and had to stop. So it deleted all the files it had installed and rolled back. Happened to me three or four times. I downloaded the full .exe file, went into safe mode, and it installed like a champ with no issues whatsoever. Works just fine.

Just because you haven't tried it, doesn't make it "noob". If it works and works well, I really couldn't care less. The drivers and processes that would usually conflict with it weren't active which is probably why it solved the issue. My question is, why would anyone want all that extra "fluff" working when it's trying to install and update the majority of it? Isn't that the point of restarting the computer afterward? So it can update what it can't update because it's currently active?
