Thank you Imacri! I'm inclined to think that the simplest solution is the best, i.e. pre-installing only KB3191203 and letting Windows Update check for all the other updates. I'll go ahead and post links here for those who have difficulty finding it:

I'm not really concerned about the October MSRT, and I had already installed Update for Windows Vista (KB3182203, time zone change for Novosibirsk) on September 20 - however that still leaves Security Update for Windows Vista (KB3190847). Why didn't I get that update? It is listed in the Security Bulletin for October under "Security Update for Microsoft Video Control" (see https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-122). I have checked for Windows updates again, but it only offered me MSRT and a definition update. I then tried to manually install KB3190847, but got the message "the update does not apply to your system." Could pre-installing KB3183431 be the reason why I'm not able to install KB3190847? On the other hand, Vista1972 pre-installed both KB3183431 and KB3191203, but did not mention any difficulty manually installing KB3190847 (see post #364). Another possible explanation might be that I have TV Pack 2008 installed, along with its associated security updates, which most people running Vista do not have. Could be that KB3190847 is incompatible with TV Pack? Who knows? I'm considering attempting a system restore to a point before KB3183431 was pre-installed.

Hello JudyJetson! I didn't mean to ignore your post, but there has been some lingering uncertainty regarding the simplest and best solution for getting October updates for Vista. I see you haven't posted here since August. Assuming your have previously installed the updates that were released on September 13, it should only be necessary to pre-install the one update linked in the post just above. However if you have not installed your September updates either, then you should first install this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53714.

I wouldn't be too concerned about this if your Windows Update Agent and the standalone .msu installer for KB3190847 both agree that you don't need this update. You could double-check your installed updates at Control Panel | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates - it's always possible that KB3190847 was delivered during a previous Windows Update session.

I checked the supersedence chains for both KB3190847 and KB3183431 in the Microsoft Update Catalog and don't see any common dependencies between the two updates. According to the file manifests, KB3190847 (MS16-122: Description of the security update for Microsoft video control: October 11, 2016) updates MSVidctl.dll while KB3183431 (MS16-123: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: October 11, 2016) updates Dfsc.sys and Mrxdav.sys.

I have a 32-bit Vista OS and it looks like today's KB3190847 delivered v6.5.6002.19689 of the C:\Windows\System32\MSVidctl.dll (ActiveX control for streaming video) (created 12-Oct-2016; last modified 03-Sep-2016).

Thanks again Imacri for your attention to my concerns regarding KB3190847. My MSVidCtl.dll was created on the same day I installed TV Pack, so I consider that mystery solved. (Fortunately, an attacker would have to convince me to open a specially crafted file...)

I had successfully restored my system by the time I saw your post. This time I pre-installed only KB3191203 as we have discussed. My subsequent check for updates took 35 minutes, so it would appear that KB3183431 has no appreciable effect in terms of speed. Again the October MSRT was offered but found to be "not needed" (a novelty possibly related to my use of MSE 4.9):

hello guys new to the forum followed the information provided and it solved the issue which I've been having for a while, the only problem is that when I installed the kernel mode driver listed in dalai's webpage I had to disconnect from the internet in order for it to work , if I do not it will not configure and gets stuck on stage 3 of 3, So when I boot computer up I have to wait 6-10 minutes so that the internet icon shows up and doesn't show a red x which in turn will not show windows updates,does that make any sense to anyone

Welcome to Vista Forums germanjam. Is this on a laptop? Others have reported that disconnecting from the internet was a necessary step for them, and at least one wondered if it was because they were using a laptop. I definitely do not have to disconnect my desktop from the internet in order to run standalone installers, and it doesn't really make sense to me. I wonder what Imacri currently thinks about this?

sorry quick fingers :D. let me finish the sentence I stayed connected to the internet and It configured stage 2 of 3 when the computer restarted it said stage 3 of 3 which took 3 hours to configure/log on, and 2.5 hours to log off/shut down( I'm not kidding!!), so what I did was a force shut down and boot up in safe mode and deleted the update, which solved the problem. I try to download updates individually so that I know if one causes a problem. I'm wondering if it may be a conflict with my anti - virus?

If I understand correctly, you have recently installed Vista SP2, and like everyone else you find that Windows Update seems to run endlessly without finding any updates. I'm glad that you already know how to manually install updates, because you need to manually install the Vista x86 versions of the following updates in the order they are listed. First you should set Windows Update to "never check for updates" and restart the PC. Some say it is also necessary to disconnect from the internet before running standalone installers, but I have never found that to be necessary myself. If you have already installed one of these it the wrong order, then I suggest that you remove it before proceeding. Restart when requested after each installer has run:

1. KB3078601 (August 2015)
2. KB3109094 (December 2015)
3. KB3145739 (April 2016) Edit: No longer necessary according to Imacri's post immediately below.
4. KB3164033 (June 2016)
5. KB3185911 (September 13)
6. KB3191203 (October 11)

Note: There will probably be a new addition to this list on November 8. After manually installing these updates, Windows Update should be able to check for and download other updates in a reasonable length of time, but it will still be much slower than the good old days. Good luck!

If you run into any problems installing the Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32K.sys) speed up patches recommended by Vistaar you can refer to the step-by-step instructions posted 16-Jun-2016 (revised for October 2016) on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours in the MS Answers forum. I post in that forum as user Great White North.

Recent feedback by Shoganator (page 18), mihr- and davidsona303 (page 19) in m#l's thread confirms that the five Windows kernel-mode driver updates KB3078601 (rel. 18-Aug-2015); KB3109094 (rel. 07-Dec-2015); KB3164033 (rel. 14-Jun-2016); KB3185911 (rel. 13-Sep-2016); KB3191203 (rel. 11-Oct-2016) should speed up Windows Update on a Vista SP2 machine after a clean re-install of the operating system. As Vistaar noted, that list of Win32K.sys speed up patches will be valid until Microsoft releases their next batch of Patch Tuesday security updates on 08-Nov-2016.

The footnote at the bottom of those instructions (Note 1) states that "KB3145739 and KB3168965 have been removed from the previous list for September 2016 because they have been replaced (superseded) by the latest KB3191203."

For future reference, the supersedence chain for every Windows update can be found in the Microsoft Update Catalog (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx). If you search for the string "KB3191203 Vista" (without the quote marks) in the Catalog and click the link for Security Update for Windows Vista (KB3191203) in the search results, the Package Details tab will show that KB3145739 and KB3168965 both appear in the list of 32-bit Vista SP2 updates that have been replaced (superseded) by Dalai's latest recommended speed up patch KB3191203 (released 11-Oct-2016).

I had to roll back my vista to June 2014 due to HDD Crash. Windows Update for Vista SP2 Home Premium X86 was impossible before these updates @ 05/11/2016:
1. KB3078601 (August 2015)
2. KB3109094 (December 2015)
3. KB3164033 (June 2016)
4. KB3185911 (September 13)
5. KB3191203 (October 11)
I was download them from WU catalog and update my system step by step in the above order. After every update installation i was restart my computer.
After these procedures searching updates takes a while, i was stay calmly.
1st search takes a ~6 hours, 119 updates found, i installed 07/2014 to 12/2014 (with office 2007/SP3) [~ 20 updates]
2nd search takes a ~4 hours, i installed 01/2015 to 06/2015 (with office 2007/SP3) [~ 30 updates]
3rd search takes a ~3 hours i installed 06/2015 to 12/2015 (with office 2007/SP3) [~ 25 updates]

I found w7_Sp1_Pro DVD version at local store . It's restiricted (only use in Turkey and other middle east - african countries) and priced 90 USD. Is there any activation problem after installign w7 at this time? Do you hear any problem?
