windows update just seems to hang while checking.

Is there a new kernel for September updates. If so could someone kindly link me to the download. Thanks.

Patch Tuesday is always the second Tuesday of the month, and will fall on September 13 this month. Try again then.

So I'm back and the updates were finally found.
But now I'm stuck at "Downloading, 0% of 0KB." Should I just wait?

EDIT: Oh, never mind. Waiting sorted the problem out. I'll turn auto updates on and check if svchost is going to go nuts again after the updates are installed.
EDIT2: svchost does not eat my CPU now, but TrustedInstaller does... And svchost started to eat memory. Tried the hotfix, but it's not applicable.
EDIT3: Oh, never mind. I just had to wait.

Thank you Vista1972! There was obviously no "Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers" this month, but I was able to duplicate your success by pre-installing KB3185911. (Of course for those who are months behind on Windows updates, this would not be the right place to start.) Before anyone gripes about the Microsoft links, they should work about once every 3 or 4 tries.

Also released today: Apple's latest iOS 10. If you are using iTunes 12.1.3 on Vista to support an iPad or iPhone, today's exciting upgrade will break compatibility and send you shopping for a new platform to support your mobile device.

Hi Vistaar:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS16-106 (Security Update for Microsoft Graphics Component: September 13, 2016) notes that KB3185911 includes a patch for a Win32K Elevation of Privilege vulnerability (CVE-2016-3348) on Vista machines. The file manifest for KB3185911 shows this update includes a patch for the Windows kernel-mode driver Win32K.sys.

Dalai's list of required Win32K.sys updates at Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (http://wu.krelay.de/en/) was revised for today's September 2016 Patch Tuesday updates. KB3185911 has now been added to the list and replaces last month's KB3177725.

As of 13-Sep-2016 the full list of Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32K.sys) updates on Dalai's webpage is: KB3078601 (rel. 18-Aug-2015); KB3109094 (rel. 07-Dec-2015); KB3145739 (rel. 12-Apr-2016); KB3164033 (rel. 14-Jun-2016); KB3168965 (rel. 12-Jul-2016); KB3185911 (rel. 13-Sep-2016).

Thanks Vistaar & VFN! No thanks are necessary-glad it worked!

As Imacri has noted, Dalai has everything documented and tested. Actually, I did check his page first before I followed my usually process but he didn't have anything posted at that time. Unless Microsoft changes Windows Update for Vista, the way I've been checking for the Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability should be the same for October.

Go to the following URL: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms16-sep.aspx

NOTE: On patch Tuesday in October, the URL will be: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms16-oct.aspx
Also, the page won't be live until 1-2 EST (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time US & Canada.

Look thru the available updates. For instance, September had Bulletin ID's MS16-104 thru MS16-117. Click on the link for MS16-106. Scroll down to the table "Affected Software and Vulnerability Severity Ratings" you'll notice this entry:
Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability – CVE-2016-3348

Click the link for either Vista SP2 or Vista SP2 x64 to download the standalone file. You'll also notice in the far right column what previous KB file it replaces along with the bulletin ID.

  • Download the standalone msu
  • Stop Windows Update Service
  • Install the msu
  • Reboot
  • Check Windows Update for updates

My Computer

I had the manual install refused to update with the Windows update service stopped. Changing WU to never check and disconnecting from the internet worked for me.

Just installed a reliability rollup for Microsoft .NET framework 4.5.2 & 4.6 on Vista. Wondering if Vista will follow Windows 7 with security & reliability rollups vs. individual updates in October?

I have hidden the optional rollup, but installed the important time zone change for Novosibirsk and Omsk.

Rollups? We don't need no stinkin' rollups!

Considering that vista is almost out of support I highly doubt it but we can't know for sure what M$ will do and they don't exactly have a track record for being predictable.

Hi Vista1972:

From Nathan Mercer's comment posted 18-Aug-2016 @ 10:04 AM in his MS TechNet blog entry Further simplifying servicing models for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

"we don’t currently have plans to extend the Rollup servicing model to Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. We continue to consider changes to Vista/2008 but technically there are complications that will make any changes on those platforms more challenging."

Nathan's original May 2016 blog entry Simplifying updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 also notes that Microsoft has started the process of removing individual Windows updates off the Microsoft Download Center (http://download.microsoft.com/) and will only make them available via the Microsoft Update Catalog (http://catalog.update.microsoft.com), but my understanding is that this change will only affect updates for Win 7 and higher - Vista users will be able to continue downloading standalone update packages (.msu files) from the Microsoft Download Center.

Hey Imacri:

Yeah, I remember reading that quote. I think that's why I was shocked to see the .NET framework rollup offered in Vista. I assumed no rollups - OS security/reliability or peripheral service - would be available?

Patch Tuesday has become a nightmare in itself...especially for the last days of Vista. Hopefully it won't get worse!

I guess my my only concern for windows 7 is what happens when one of the updates within the rollup cause an issue? It was so easy to remove a singular update in the past. Anyone who has used the Microsoft community forums seeking an answer to an issue knows how diverse the user experience really is. How would Microsoft react to an issue that only affects 15% of the users? Do they ignore them - like they currently do. Or will they offer an exclusive rollup for the 15%? I guess those answers will be issued in due time!
