windows update just seems to hang while checking.

Just installed a reliability rollup for Microsoft .NET framework 4.5.2 & 4.6 on Vista.

Just saw I have this as an optional update. Do I need it?

Thanks

What a pain...

Pre-installing KB3183431 & KB3191203 (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS16-123) didn't work for me this month. After installing both KB3183431 & KB3191203 (MS16-123), rebooting and running Windows Update for over 35 minutes, it was still checking. I downloaded the remaining individual updates found at: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/mt637763.aspx

After downloading and installing the individual updates I rebooted and launched windows update again. 6 additional updates were listed after 15-20 minutes (MSRT, .Net roll-up, several Word updates, etc.)

If you choose this method, one thing you can do to speed-up the install process of the individual updates is to keep your services window open and manually stop Windows Update after installing each MSU file. Also, don't reboot when prompted. Reboot after installing all of the updates.

Hopefully someone had a much better experience than me!

Well it did work for me. I'm guessing you didn't restart after first installing KB3183431?

It looks like Dalai is throwing in the towel (see Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution), so we're on our own once again. As Vista1972 has found, there are two separate updates listed for "Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers" this month (see https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-123). Of course my Vista PC was fully up to date prior to the release of today's patches. After first installing KB3183431 (because it has the lowest KB number) and restarting, I let Windows Update check for about half an hour without success. Then I installed KB3191203, restarted, and checked for updates again, this time successfully. This month's Rollup for .NET Framework is described as Important, so I installed it (unlike last month's Optional rollup, which I have hidden). Oddly, after installing updates but before restarting, one update was listed as Not Needed. Apparently this was the October MSRT, which is not listed in my Update History. (This could be related to using MSE, but it hasn't happened before.)

Reinstalling Vista just got a lot riskier. If you think your Vista system is worth recovering, then I would suggest a Macrium Reflect CD and a backup image (full discussion of which is obviously beyond the scope of this ridiculously lengthy thread).

I haven't tried to update my Vista VM yet. I'm busy trying to update my fresh install of 7. I decided to put Windows on my mac and I would have loved to put Vista on it however since it is almost out of support and unsupported by Apple I decided to put 7 on instead. That's my recommendation for anyone looking to reinstall Windows or still on Vista if they can get a legit key for 7. It wouldn't be as extreme a change as going from Vista to 8 or 10 and currently it is the most recent version of Windows that I will use on my own systems. I will hold on to Vista as a VM but I likely now won't be using it as much as I was before. I just can't personally see using it as a live system anymore.

Sadly this has not worked for me, at least not so far...

The special updates that fix the problem (as found on this forum - thanks!) have worked like a charm since I began having problems around June or so. It usually takes between 15-25mins after installing and rebooting them, so I'm feeling a little un-optimistic this time as WU has been checking for almost 2hrs now... Doesn't bode well. :/

EDIT- I spoke too soon! Got 10 updates after it spent 2.5hrs checking. That's still better than it would have been without pre-installing the above. :) Thanks.

I installed these two updates the other way round.
Wonder if installing them your way would work better?

I believe you installed them in the correct order (lowest KB number first), which worked for me also. It might not be clear whether or not this actually makes any difference until some month in the future. It worries me that KB3183431 actually has a lower KB number than September's "must have" update KB3185911. I'm not sure what that might mean for those who are months or years behind on Windows updates.

Hi Vistaar:

Thanks for the feedback. Vista1972 noted in post # 364 that he aborted Windows Update after waiting only 35 minutes, so it's also possible that some users will have to wait a bit longer for the initial "Checking for updates..." phase to finish this month. Catscomputer noted in post # 370 that they had to waited 2.5 hours for Windows Update to run to completion.

I haven't tried to install my October 2016 Patch Tuesday updates yet, but I'm also wondering if pre-installing KB3191203 by itself would speed up Windows Update on some Vista SP2 computers.

KB3191203 (MS16-120 and MS16-123: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: October 11, 2016) replaces the old KB3177725 and updates Win32K.sys from 6.0.6002.19668 to 6.0.6002.19693 to patch Win32k Elevation of Privilege vulnerabilities CVE-2016-3376 and CVE-2016-7211. This looks similar to the Win32K.sys updates that I've used in previous months to speed up Windows Update

KB3183431 (MS16-123: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: October 11, 2016) replaces the old KB3124280 and updates mrxdav.sys from 6.0.6002.19576 to 6.0.6002.19691 to patch Win32k Elevation of Privilege vulnerability CVE-2016-7185. The old KB3124280 (MS16-016: Description of the security update for WebDAV: February 9, 2016) was a patch for the Microsoft Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) client. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that KB3183431 isn't really a "speed-up" patch, even though it addresses an important Win32k Elevation of Privilege vulnerability.

Either way, I don't think it would do any harm for users to manually install the standalone update packages (.msu files) for both KB3183431 and KB31911203 to see if this speeds up Windows Update on their Vista SP2 machine.

Hi VFN:

The links to the .msu installers for KB3183431 and KB3191203 are posted on Dalai's webpage at Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (http://wu.krelay.de/en/) - just look for the table with the Vista x64 (for 64-bit Vista) and Vista x86 (for 32-bit Vista) column headers.

Before starting the installs I'd suggest you terminate any automatic Windows Updates running in the background first by disabling automatic Windows Updates [Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended)] and re-booting (the re-boot is critical). Download and save the .msu installers to your desktop and then double-click the .msu file to run each installer. You should be prompted at the end of each installation to restart your computer, so be sure to do so. I don't know if it's necessary to install the update with the lower KB number first, but that worked for Vistaar so try installing KB3183431 before KB3191203.

Hello Imacri:

That thought has crossed my mind also. If anyone has tried pre-installing just KB3191203, hopefully they will post here and let us know the outcome. Otherwise, perhaps you should test that idea yourself? Those who have pre-installed the two updates in reverse order might not have anything to worry about after all.

Hi Vistaar:

SteveBUC's thread Windows Oct 2016 Updates for Vista in the MS Answers forum indicated that pre-installing KB3191203 was enough to speed up Windows Update, so I went ahead and tested myself. I pre-installed KB3191203 (but not KB3183431) today and my Windows Update ran to completion in about 1 hour 15 min on my 32-bit Vista machine and installed 11 important updates (I declined 1 optional update for Silverlight). Those 11 important updates included this month's KB3188744 Monthly Rollup for the MS .NET Framework and the KB3183431 that was also listed on Dalai's webpage at Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (http://wu.krelay.de/en/).

WU October 2016 Patch Tuesday Updates 12 Oct 2016.jpg

My initial "Checking for updates..." phase was much slower this month - about 45 min instead of the typical 20 min I'm used to seeing on Patch Tuesdays when I use Dalai's workaround. I don't know if "Checking for updates..." might have completed faster if I had pre-installed both KB3183431 and KB3191203, but it appears that Vista SP2 users will have to be patient and give Windows Update a bit of extra time to run this month if they try this workaround.

I downloaded the KB3101203 and then clicked on it but then got a pop-up saying "Searching for Updates," and it just stays there. The KB3101203 doesn't install. Is there something else I should be doing to install it?
Every month I seem to be having the same problem trying to download the Critical Updates for my Vista 32bit.
Thank you for any help you might be able to supply.

(I unchecked the notify me when updates available...)

ADD ON
I restarted the Vista and it did install!!!!! Let me see now if I can download any other updates.
2nd ADD ON
Nope, still sayings "Checking for Updates when I go to the Critical Update page and click on check for updates.
How do I now get any additional critical updates to download?
3rd ADD
I turned notify me when updates available back ON and restarted Vista and then went back to the check updates page and saw there were 8 critical updates ready to be downloaded. I will download them now and report back if any problems continue.
4th ADD ON
Have been trying to download/install the 8 updates, but keep getting a pop-up with red writing saying "Failed, try again." I keep trying but keep getting same pop-up.
Does anyone know what is going on? For the past several months it has been almost to get a 'clean' download/install of Vista Critical Updates.
