Re: The best antivirus?

yes, any norton or mcafee product you will waste your money on. not only are they inferior to many cheaper alternatives, they are processor and memory hogs as well.

and yes, i agree that avira and avast are very good as far as free software. the full version of avira is modestly priced as well.

one that i do not hear mentioned much is 'malware bytes anti-malware'. it's core program is also free, but to use it's active protection you can purchase their full version. it has outperformed other antivirus programs i've used for cleaning computers that were so badly infected they were at the point of format. It is relatively light weight, and can be installed with little hassle and carries no running processes when not in use. i would highly recommend it for spot cleaning.

For my active protection i use ESet Nod32. It is relatively cheap ($39.99/yr) and offers very good protection with extremely low processor/memory usage (about 3000kb)

just my opinions on av :)

Re: The best antivirus?

Personally I do not support the free versions because IN MY OPINION if it is free it cannot be that good, AVG I would steer clear of, I have heard of many problems with the programme itself, not to mention the fact I have also heard it lets the nasties in.

I agree with your thoughts on AVG, but Avira or Avast offer better protection for free than many other programs, they don't deserve to be thrown out only because they don't cost any money. :p

Re: The best antivirus?

Hello Rickick,
You will get as many answers as there are programs out there.
It depends on the personal experience of the user.
If they had a bad experience they will coat it off, a good experience and it will be recommended.
If you want a free one, then AVG or Avast are as good as any.
If you want to pay for one, then Kaspersky is as good as any.
There you go, i use kaspersky with no issues, so i am recommending that one.
Hope this in some way helps.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: The best antivirus?

The P-40 is the most beautiful bird of WW2 IMHO. The AVG guys had some guts to do what they did and were the precursor to developing tactics with fighter aircraft.

Oh well, let's give the OP his thread back!

Re: The best antivirus?

The Avast beta is very light on resources. Vipre AV is also one lightweight AV.

Avast mem usage when idle: 8 mb.
Capture.PNG

Vipre mem usage when idle: 7 mb.
VipreMemUsage.PNG

IMO, any AV that uses less than 10 mb is ideal to use.

Re: The best antivirus?

Nothing is wrong with McAfee except bias against it.It preforms well and does not slow your system down.Of course you have to pay for it.I wouldn't use a free program on my computer if I wanted the computer to last a few years and remain as free as possible of "bugs".

Re: The best antivirus?

IMO, the best Anti-Virus is the one that is easiest for you to use.

Every scanner has a different User Interface. Some you may find difficult to navigate and find important information, others may seem like a piece of cake. It's really trial and error until you find the one that you like. No such thing as 'best', maybe user preferred or community preferred but they all perform the same basic tasks.

Someone here mentioned this,

I found this great free tool -- Advanced SystemCare -- at IObit - Free Computer Scan, Security, Clean, Repair, Optimization, and Protection.

I used two of those, but was told by someone at Avast forum about it. I then uninstalled them. Here are the links,
