Whats the Best Antivirus/ Security Suite??

Thats not fast. The 2min quick scan is fast. Norton knows what to skip and cache anyway. Malwarebytes takes around the same - 40min. There's a lot to be said for watching what you install on your pc/laptop. And yes, choice is excellent if you know what you are looking for.

Absolutely.

No. Its not that its Microsoft, which many people would find a great excuse, but that is you pay for a product you get everything - features, support if you need it, faster update times, etc. Although I will be switching to Kaspersky. Time for a breath of fresh air, so to speak, without Norton.

OK so you make the switch to paid Kaspersky, do you take out a one year licence?
- or for a longer term?

no because the AV isnt up to scratch , too many missed samples and not consistent enough month to month on detection rates (AV Comparitives)

this argument will go on and ON :zip: bottom line is , Eset , Norton etc are much better but Microsoft is free :) it all depends on what you want really.

Not sure about Vista but on 7 it installs, updates, scans, detects and removes efficiently. What i dont like about it that is uses around 40-50 MB RAM even when idle.

the title of the thread asks for the 'best' antivirus security suite - well, i'm afraid i don;t know what the best one is because i haven't tried them all long wenough to really have a definitive answer.

all i can say is that i use kis 2010, and i feel very safe and secure with it running in the background. i've been using kaspersky's products for about four years, and have had no problems and no infections in that time.

(luckily, i get it free through my online bank account with barclays in the uk.)

Hi Cory,

I just change over to Vista x64 and couldn't help responding to your comment and query.

"I had Norton when I got my PC new and I totally didn't like it.. not at all. it was slow, sluggish. I just wasn't a fan.."

I have the same feeling for Norton. I dislike any software or program that dictates to me what I can or cant do on my own computer. [Norton came pre-installed with 2 of my PCs]

With the help of this forum I had just disabled my Windows Defender.

I have tried most if not all the Antivirus mentioned in this forum
and I found "Trend Micro Internet Security or Pro" allowable for 3 installations the most affordable and works well for me on my XP and X64Vista and my Cellphone.

With the above installed I had been running the same program for a few years with the Windows Firewall on "Off" mode without any problem.

I found this great free tool -- Advanced SystemCare -- at IObit - Free Computer Scan, Security, Clean, Repair, Optimization, and Protection.

To do additional cleanup for Malware, Spyware, Defrag and Registry cleaner.

What is most important is that both are compatible with XP and Vista.

Trend Micro has a 30 day free version for you to try out.

The best antivirus?

I currently am using a version of Symantec Antivirus on my PC, and it seems to be causing some problems for me. I was looking to change, butt i have no idea what to switch to theres so many diffetrent ones. I was looking at something from possibly McaFee or AVG ?

Anyone know of anything where i would not need a subscription? and price is not an issue at the time. I just want "The Best Protection Possible" :)

I use the free version of AVG and find it the least intrusive to CPU usage of any A/V I have ever used and it does an outstanding job.

Ewwwwww Norton get rid of it!! , not only is it a resource hog, but the antivirus is as useless as tits on a bull!! :D

Up until I moved into Vista, I had been a devout Trendmicro (PC-Cillin) user, onver the past 15 odd years on the internet viruses came knocking at my door but PC-Cillin always sent them packing.

However I no longer use PC-Cillin because (and this is the only reason), the user interface, had become impossible to use. By that I mean PC-Cillin had more control over my PC than I did :(.

Personally I do not support the free versions because IN MY OPINION if it is free it cannot be that good, AVG I would steer clear of, I have heard of many problems with the programme itself, not to mention the fact I have also heard it lets the nasties in.

Avast (free antivirus) while I have not used it, has had better reports.

At the moment I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed and paid for 12 months.

While I like the user interface, I am not sure at this time whether or not I will keep on using it. It seems to be a little bit of a resource hog.

The next antivirus I will be trying out will be Bitdefender, however I cannot comment on this product yet, as I still have 10 months paid subs with Kaspersky.

I think choosing an Anti Virus is a bit like choosing what operating system and type of PC you like, some people swear by Linux, and others swear by MACS.

Naturally whatever you decide to do after you have uninstalled Norton, install something to tide you over until you decide which one suits you best.

Good luck!

I am not very experienced with computers and have a question or two about Vista and my AV software.
I have One Care and it is not going to be available in a month or so. I am thinking about getting Nod32. I also use Super Anti Spyware. What would be a good firewall since the one I currently use is One care. It has been very good for me. Also, another novice question, how do I figure out which version of Vista I have, 32 or 64?

Thanks.

To find out the version click on START and type in Welcome Center this will bring up the program, just click on it and the Welcome Center screen will appear. In the upper right hand corner click on Show more details. This will give you your systems operating information. With reference to a firewall I would use the one that come with the Vista program. I used it for a while untill I purchased the AVG Internet Security. Hope this helps you. see attachments.

Hi Gimpy, Nod32 is excellent; it is my favorite. It has been on all 6 computers in my house. However, lately the one on my gaming computer has expired and now using only window defender that came with Vista; I really can't tell there is any different.:D

Hope this helps.
