How to Create a Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD​

   Information

This will show you how to create a Vista installation DVD with the Vista SP1 slipstreamed into it for any 32 and 64 bit version of Vista you want. This DVD will allow you to do a clean install of Vista with the SP1 all at once instead of installing Vista first then the SP1.

   Note

This Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD will also allow you to run a Repair install on Vista with SP1 installed now. Before, you could not use a normal Vista installation DVD ro run a Repair install on Vista with SP1 installed since Vista with SP1 was a new version than what was on the Vista DVD.

   Tip

If you have a Dell OEM computer, then see this link to help you possibly create a sliptream installation DVD from your Dell installation disc.

   Warning

You can only make a 64-bit Vista DVD in a installed 64-bit Vista, and only a 32-bit Vista DVD in a installed 32-bit Vista.


REQUIREMENTS:

• 32 bit or 64 bit Retail or OEM (not Recovery) Vista Installation DVDNOTE: If you would like to use that same bit version you have of Vista, then open the Control Panel (Classic View) and click the System icon, or right click Computer in the Start Menu and click Properties. You will see the bit version under the System type section.
• vLiteNOTE: You can download vLite from here: http://www.vlite.net/download.html . Please post questions about specific errors with the vLite program at their forum here: http://www.msfn.org/board/vLite-f153.html
  WARNING: I would recommend to Download and install the latest 1.2 Final version.
• SP1 Standalone Installer
  NOTE: Use the SP1 standalone installer for you 32 bit or 64 bit version and language of Vista. The smaller the file, the better. To see what version you have, press the Windows Key + Pause/Break key and look under System type.
  • Download details: Windows 32 bit Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330) 434.5 MB
    NOTE: For English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional) only.
  • Download details: Windows 32 bit Vista Service Pack 1 All Language Standalone (KB936330) 544.3 MB
  • Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for 64 bit based Systems (KB936330) 726.5 MB
    NOTE: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional) only.
  • Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 All Language Standalone for 64 bit Systems (KB936330) 873.0 MB
• A blank unformated DVD at least 4 GB in size
• Around 3.5 hours or so of your time and patience.

Microsoft has issued a note to users, of “v-Lited” Windows Vista SP1 installs, having issues upgrading to SP2. Their advice? Reinstall Windows with genuine media. For more on this, see: Short: vLite screws up Windows Vista SP1 upgrade path - Within Windows

Here's How:

   Note

You will need to temporarily disable your antivirus program before you start this to prevent possible interference to the vLite program below. This program is safe, but could be mistaken as not by some antivirus programs and prevent you from creating the SP1 slipstream DVD.

1. Copy the Vista Installation DVD Contents to the Desktop​

A) Place the retail or OEM (not Recovery) Vista installation DVD into the DVD drive.​

NOTE: If AutoPlay or the Vista install window pops-up, just close it.​

​

B) Open the Start Menu and click on Computer.​

​

C) Right click on the DVD drive in Computer with the Vista installation DVD and click on Copy. (See screenshot below)​

D) Right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on Paste.​

NOTE: This may take a few minutes to finish copying all of the Vista installation DVD contents to the folder on the desktop.​

​

2. Download the SP1 Standalone Installer to the Desktop​

NOTE: See Requirements at the top of the tutorial for the download links. You will need to select the same 32 bit or 64 bit version of the SP1 as the Vista installation DVD from step 1.​

A) Download and save the SP1 standalone installer to the desktop.​

​

3. Download and Install the vLite Program​

NOTE: See Requirements at the top of the tutorial for the download link.​

A) Right click on the vLite program shortcut and click Run as Administrator.​

​

B) Click on Allow.​

​

C) If this window pops-up, then click on the Install button(s) for the missing features needed by vLite. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: If you see the WAIK Download link, then you will need to click on the Install button to download the 1.34GB ISO WAIK file first. Next, follow the instructions at the download link:​

• Click the Download button on this page to start the download.
• Click on Save, and save the .iso file to your desktop.
• Burn the saved .iso file to a DVD. You can use ISO Recorder to do this. This link will show you how to use ISO Recorder.
• Run the DVD to install WAIK.

WARNING: There is a glitch in the vLite 1.2 version where you may receive an error about WAIK when trying to run vLite. WAIK is not always properly recognized in Vista 32 bit. You may need to manually copy and paste the wimgapi.dll file from WAIK into the root vLite folder (main folder) in C:\Programs for it to work properly.​

4. Click on the Browse button. (See screenshot below)​

5. Click on the Vista folder (created from step 1) on the desktop and click on the LRMCFRE_EN_DVD folder, then click OK. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: You may have a different name than LRMCFRE_EN_DVD based on your type of Vista installation DVD, but it will be the one right under Vista.​

6. Click on the Vista edition that you want to use for the Vista SP1 slipstream DVD to highlight it and click OK. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: You can only have one Vista edition per slipstream DVD. If you want to have more than one Vista edition, then you must repeat this tutorial for each individual Vista edition for their own DVD.​

7. Click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)​

​

8. Check both the Service Pack Slipstream and Bootable ISO boxes and click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)​

9. Click on the Select button. (See screenshot below)​

​

​

10. Select the SP1 standalone program (from step 2) on the desktop and click on the Open button. (See screenshot below)​

​

11. Click on Run when this window pops-up in a few seconds. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: This runs the SP1 installer program for the vLite program only. It will not install the SP1 on your computer.​

12. This will take around 60 to 120 minutes or so to complete this part. Some older slower systems may take a bit longer. (See screenshot below)​

Enjoy your break. ​

NOTE: In the Status box, you will see Preparing first, Extracting second, Integrating third, then this below until it is finished with this part. It will seem like it is stuck about 60% of the way, but it is not.​

13. When Finished, click on Next. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: If this fails, then verify that you are using the same 32 bit or 64 bit versions of the Vista SP1 and Vista Installation DVD files. If they are not the same, it will fail.​

14. Under the General section, make sure that Create Image is selected and click on the Make ISO button. (See screenshot below)​

​

15. If the Created Image is over 4 GB​

A) If this window pops-up on you with a similar message after you click on the Make ISO button (from step 14), then click on No and continue to step 16. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: If you do not get the option to make the ISO image smaller, then see: ​

B) If not, then go to step 19 and skip steps 16, 17, and 18.​

​

16. Dot Rebuild one (Vista edition from step 5) and click OK. (See screenshot below)​

17. When finished, click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: This will take a little bit to finish.​

​

18. Under the General section, make sure that Create Image is selected and click on the Make ISO button. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: After the Vista and SP1 image file has been rebuilt to make it smaller, you will return to the same screen in step 14.​

19. Select the Desktop and click on the Save button. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: This is where the ISO file will be saved when it is finished being created.​

​

​

20. When it is finished creating the ISO file, place a blank unformated DVD into the DVD drive.​

NOTE: If AutoPlay pops-up asking you to format the DVD, just close it.​

​

21. Under the General section, make sure that Burn Image is selected and that you have your DVD drive selected under Device. Click on the Burn button. (See screenshot below)​

22. When it is finished making the Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD it will say Write Successful, then click on the Finish or Exit button. (See screenshot below)​

NOTE: It will take a few minutes to finish this. When you click Finish, it will close vLite.​

23. Remove your new Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD from the DVD drive.​

NOTE: You will use this DVD the same way you did the retail Vista installation DVD.​

​

24. Do not forget to enable your antivirus program again.​

​

Hi Sev,

It does seem odd - just trying to interpret the error message, but as you have some problems already e.g. your control panel uninstall, who knows.

Have been told by microsoft mvp not to run two versions of Vista on same machine - so I can't recommend it.

However, if you are using two separate drives as opposed to two partitions , means two sets of boot files.

Should install as the product key will recognise the motherboard, you will only be booting into one at a time.

Don't see why it wouldn't work - in fact I recall coming across sites where people have done just that.

Shawn. Great and detailed tutorial (as always), BUT at step 15, with an image over 4 Gb, it is not clear how to get to the next step, where you ..dot... and reduce the image? I am at 4.53 Gb, so I tried burning it with Nero onto a double layer DVD, but that seemed OK until the end when it failed to do a close disk (or some such error). So I have my nicely prepared .iso file, now I want to get it under 4 Gb. Do I have to start again, or can I reduce this file at your step 16, if only I could get there!

You should still be able to use the ISO it created. Just run vLite again, but only check Bootable ISO in step 8 instead. Select the ISO when prompted (steps 9 & 10), then burn the DVD. It should condense it for you the second time through.

Umm, I must be doing something wrong. When you fire up Vlite, the only option at the start is to select the Copy of the Vista Original disk files (they one I have copied to the desktop). I can't select the 4.5 Gb .iso file I created yesterday. If I go to the next steps in Vlite and at step 8 as you describe above, this makes a bootable ISO file but only of the original Vista files, without the SP1 upgrade.

I don't mind starting again, but what step(s) do I take from the start to make sure I have the smallest final .iso?

The downloaded SP1 file (Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0) is a 5 language version and is 750 Mb in size, is there a single language one I can use that is smaller?

Hi Kotuku,

Normally I wouldn't recommend removing components at the same time as slipstreaming SP1. If you are having trouble with the .iso size, you might like to try removing the foreign languages which, if it works, reduces the size of the install dvd by over 1gb.

To do this , first click the options tab, top left of vLite and uncheck the options , then OK.


Follow the tutorial but also check Components in step 8



When you click Next at step 13 ( I think it's at this step - anyway, you'll see it )

This box pops - just click OK



Then you see this Window - tick only the Languages box ( you can click the + sign to expand languages and tick individual ones to remove - but I always remove them all )



Then click Apply and continue on - you will recognise the steps from the tutorial, so continue as before.


Hope it works for you. I have used vLite a lot , but have not tried this particular combination of steps.

Many thanks. The trick seems to be that while it is building the image (I love that 90 minute wait <smile>, it tells you to hit the APPLY button at the end to make any changes and smaller. That button is greyed out at the end and you have to click Back and then the Components button to make the APPLY button clickable. Just rebuilding the image now, fingers crossed!

Thank you for posting back your results so far Kotuku. I have added this as a NOTE under step 15A. Please let me know if it needs any correction based on how it worked for you. This can help others avoid the same problems you are having.

NOTE: Sometimes you may not get this window when you have a ISO image that is over the size your DVD can hold. The screenshot from step 13 tells you to hit the Apply button at the end to make any changes or it smaller. That button is grayed out at the end and you have to click on the Back button (step 14) instead, then on the Components button to make the Apply button clickable (not grayed out) to reduce the ISO image.

I would have tried it myself, but since I have SP1 on my dvd already, I was hoping you were up for being the guinea pig. All I could do was give the best general idea that I could and let you figure out precisely when to click the back, next, and Apply buttons. Not clear from your post as to whether you tried removing the languages.

You seem to have sorted it out - let us know that it has (hopefully ) worked out.

Umm, well it seems to have finished and I have a bootable Vista DVD, BUT, on booting the new disk up, it doesn't at the load page say Vista SP1, should it?
The key here with VLite program seems to be that you make your ISO and not close this program down until you have sorted out the ability to make the image smaller.
I suspect SIW2's post above where you get the option to remove the language components is the easiest way, right from the start.

Having made my vlite.iso, I right clicked and was given 2 options to open it with, either Nero or ISO recorder v3. Is the latter part of Vista Ultimate? I never knew I had it!

Hi Kotuku,

I haven't done the slipstream thing, but am not surprised it doesn't change the load page dialog - microsoft weren't expecting Dino to have made such a brilliant program. ( I assume you got the v1.1.6 to avoid the Waik download - suggest you make a copy of the 1.1.6 installer.exe onto a cd as this is now very hard to get ).

When you have installed it, you should be able to see SP1 listed in the System window - hit the windows and break keys together and the system window pops up.

Once you have the made the .iso , you can use any program that burns a bootable iso to dvd - I use vLite as it's right there.

I don't have the Ultimate, but I'd be surprised if it included a 3rd party app. like iso recorder - you probably downloaded it some other way?

How many gb is the install dvd you just created ?

Well this is fun <smile> I have now managed to do this slipstream thing 3 times to make sure it has gone correctly.

It is VERY easy to get lost in the myriad of things to do and the reality is, I suspect going to a double layer DVD to burn is the best and easiest way. If you don't, then the following sequence should see you through to a smaller (under 4 Gb ISO file).

Open Vlite and take out any ticks under the Options Page and close it down.

Put the Original Vista copy image on your desktop as per Brinks instructions

Open Vlite and select the Image from the desktop. Wiat a few seconds and both COMPONENTS and APPLY buttons become available.

Click APPLY and select (dot the radio button) for Rebuild One (this makes only your version of Vista available in the Desktop image, in my case Ultimate)

Let it build the desktop image and click FINISH and exit Vlite. Your Desktop image of the original Vista disk has now shrunk from about 3.6 Gb to 2.9 Gb

Open Vlite and put the tick back in the OPTIONS box to LOAD LAST SESSION. Close Vlite and open it again

Start following Brink's tutorial, select the desktop image and at the next (Image at item 8 in Brink's tutorial) take OUT the tick under COMPONENTS and have the two ticks, one in SERVICE PACK SLIPSTREAM and the Other BOOTABLE ISO.

You are now following Brink's Tutorial, BUT after selecting the SP1 file to integrate it, it takes over 20 mins before you get the DO YOU WANT TO RUN THIS FILE, so don't panic.

Yes, that makes sense.

Use vLite to rebuild the files you copied from the dvd onto your hd - so they now only contain your edition.

Then when you pick them up and slipstream the SP1, the iso will be smaller.

My pleasure to be a small help. Note, I suspect NO-ONE will be below 4 Gb if they follow the tutorial and the point is, they need to do the step 15A, right at the start.

My final ISO size was 3.88 Gb.

Small problem here - downloaded WAIK from MS and installed as program.

When I start vLite and hit the install button it wants me to download it again.

Am I missing something here?

See if restarting the computer, then clicking on the Install button helps. If it asks to install WAIK again, then go ahead and click on the Install button again to see if that helps.

No didn't help - also tried uninstalling vLite and reinstalling after installing WAIK, no go - seems vLite can't find WAIK on starting.
