Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD

How to Create a Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD

information   Information
This will show you how to create a Vista installation DVD with the Vista SP1 slipstreamed into it for any 32 and 64 bit version of Vista you want. This DVD will allow you to do a clean install of Vista with the SP1 all at once instead of installing Vista first then the SP1.
Note   Note
This Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD will also allow you to run a Repair install on Vista with SP1 installed now. Before, you could not use a normal Vista installation DVD ro run a Repair install on Vista with SP1 installed since Vista with SP1 was a new version than what was on the Vista DVD.
Tip   Tip
If you have a Dell OEM computer, then see this link to help you possibly create a sliptream installation DVD from your Dell installation disc.
warning   Warning
You can only make a 64-bit Vista DVD in a installed 64-bit Vista, and only a 32-bit Vista DVD in a installed 32-bit Vista.

REQUIREMENTS:
Microsoft has issued a note to users, of “v-Lited” Windows Vista SP1 installs, having issues upgrading to SP2. Their advice? Reinstall Windows with genuine media. For more on this, see: Short: vLite screws up Windows Vista SP1 upgrade path - Within Windows

Here's How:
Note   Note
You will need to temporarily disable your antivirus program before you start this to prevent possible interference to the vLite program below. This program is safe, but could be mistaken as not by some antivirus programs and prevent you from creating the SP1 slipstream DVD.

1. Copy the Vista Installation DVD Contents to the Desktop
A) Place the retail or OEM (not Recovery) Vista installation DVD into the DVD drive.
NOTE: If AutoPlay or the Vista install window pops-up, just close it.
B) Open the Start Menu and click on Computer.
C) Right click on the DVD drive in Computer with the Vista installation DVD and click on Copy. (See screenshot below)
Step1.jpg

D) Right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on Paste.
NOTE: This may take a few minutes to finish copying all of the Vista installation DVD contents to the folder on the desktop.

2. Download the SP1 Standalone Installer to the Desktop
NOTE: See Requirements at the top of the tutorial for the download links. You will need to select the same 32 bit or 64 bit version of the SP1 as the Vista installation DVD from step 1.
A) Download and save the SP1 standalone installer to the desktop.

3. Download and Install the vLite Program
NOTE: See Requirements at the top of the tutorial for the download link.
A) Right click on the vLite program shortcut and click Run as Administrator.
B) Click on Allow.
C) If this window pops-up, then click on the Install button(s) for the missing features needed by vLite. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If you see the WAIK Download link, then you will need to click on the Install button to download the 1.34GB ISO WAIK file first. Next, follow the instructions at the download link:
  • Click the Download button on this page to start the download.
  • Click on Save, and save the .iso file to your desktop.
  • Burn the saved .iso file to a DVD. You can use ISO Recorder to do this. This link will show you how to use ISO Recorder.
  • Run the DVD to install WAIK.
WARNING: There is a glitch in the vLite 1.2 version where you may receive an error about WAIK when trying to run vLite. WAIK is not always properly recognized in Vista 32 bit. You may need to manually copy and paste the wimgapi.dll file from WAIK into the root vLite folder (main folder) in C:\Programs for it to work properly.
Step2.jpg

4. Click on the Browse button. (See screenshot below)
Step3.jpg

5. Click on the Vista folder (created from step 1) on the desktop and click on the LRMCFRE_EN_DVD folder, then click OK. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You may have a different name than LRMCFRE_EN_DVD based on your type of Vista installation DVD, but it will be the one right under Vista.
Step4.jpg

6. Click on the Vista edition that you want to use for the Vista SP1 slipstream DVD to highlight it and click OK. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You can only have one Vista edition per slipstream DVD. If you want to have more than one Vista edition, then you must repeat this tutorial for each individual Vista edition for their own DVD.
Step5.jpg

7. Click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)
Step6.jpg

8. Check both the Service Pack Slipstream and Bootable ISO boxes and click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)
Step7.jpg

9. Click on the Select button. (See screenshot below)
Step8.jpg

10. Select the SP1 standalone program (from step 2) on the desktop and click on the Open button. (See screenshot below)
Step9.jpg

11. Click on Run when this window pops-up in a few seconds. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This runs the SP1 installer program for the vLite program only. It will not install the SP1 on your computer.
Step10.jpg

12. This will take around 60 to 120 minutes or so to complete this part. Some older slower systems may take a bit longer. (See screenshot below)
Enjoy your break. ;)
NOTE: In the Status box, you will see Preparing first, Extracting second, Integrating third, then this below until it is finished with this part. It will seem like it is stuck about 60% of the way, but it is not.
Step11.jpg

13. When Finished, click on Next. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If this fails, then verify that you are using the same 32 bit or 64 bit versions of the Vista SP1 and Vista Installation DVD files. If they are not the same, it will fail.
Step12.jpg

14. Under the General section, make sure that Create Image is selected and click on the Make ISO button. (See screenshot below)
Step13.jpg

15. If the Created Image is over 4 GB
A) If this window pops-up on you with a similar message after you click on the Make ISO button (from step 14), then click on No and continue to step 16. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If you do not get the option to make the ISO image smaller, then see:
B) If not, then go to step 19 and skip steps 16, 17, and 18.
Step14.jpg

16. Dot Rebuild one (Vista edition from step 5) and click OK. (See screenshot below)
Step15.jpg

17. When finished, click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This will take a little bit to finish.
Step16.jpg

18. Under the General section, make sure that Create Image is selected and click on the Make ISO button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: After the Vista and SP1 image file has been rebuilt to make it smaller, you will return to the same screen in step 14.
Step13.jpg

19. Select the Desktop and click on the Save button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This is where the ISO file will be saved when it is finished being created.
Step17.jpg

20. When it is finished creating the ISO file, place a blank unformated DVD into the DVD drive.
NOTE: If AutoPlay pops-up asking you to format the DVD, just close it.
21. Under the General section, make sure that Burn Image is selected and that you have your DVD drive selected under Device. Click on the Burn button. (See screenshot below)
Step18.jpg

22. When it is finished making the Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD it will say Write Successful, then click on the Finish or Exit button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: It will take a few minutes to finish this. When you click Finish, it will close vLite.
Step19.jpg

23. Remove your new Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD from the DVD drive.
NOTE: You will use this DVD the same way you did the retail Vista installation DVD.
24. Do not forget to enable your antivirus program again.
That's it, your done. Finally. LOL ;)

OK,

Sorry forgot to say that every time I have used vLite I have run as administrator. Also click the options tab on vLite and uncheck "Load Last Session at Browse" - make sure the Temp files and in fact the whole operation has plenty of disc space . I always allow 20gb - probably overkill, but better than having to do it again.

Your welcome Dadudedadude. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted out.

Unfortunately IE cannot be uninstalled from Vista. It is to integrated into Vista. I have not tried it, but you might be able to integrate Firefox to the slipstream DVD from the Firefox installation file.

Hope it works for you,
Shawn

;)Hi Da...,

Not sure reccomend is the right word - everyone has different requirements. I can tell you some things I have removed at various times if that's any help.

You can remove I.E. with vLite but I wouldn't as it saves very little space and Windows Updates come thru. it. As Shawn says you really need it it is integral to the running of Vista ( only 57mb - don't worry you'll save 741mb and 602mb simply by removing tablet pc and speech support ).

Here's a list of things I have removed without any ill-effects :

Welcome Center, Accessibility, Media Center and TV Tuners, Sidebar and gadgets, Parental Controls, Speech Support, Tablet P.C. ( you won't be able to use the snipping tool so I removed that too and use FastStone Capture 53 instead. FastStone Capture 5.3 winAddons.com ). Inbox Games and Premium Games - i would keep games explorer as some third party games like to use it.

The two Telnet features, Music &Video Samples, Sample Pictures, Screensavers, DFS Replication, Indexing Service, RIP Listener, Paint, Calendar, ( You could remove Photo Gallery and Mail if you want to replace them with the Live versions - make sure you're happy with the Live ones first ). Foreign Languages ( reduces size of image on install disc ).

Delete wallpapers you don't want after installation - they're in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper . You can also reduce the number of fonts that load - C:\Windows\Fonts - just right click Fonts, highlight them all and delete one by one - it's ok, Vista won't let you delete the ones she needs. (You can copy the Wallpaper and Fonts folders to a cd beforehand if you like).

I don't advise using the Tweaks section, much less remove anything from the Services section unless you really know what you are doing.

Hi SIW2'and Thanks for that infro-
Great program faststone-capture-53/ I've put the dvd sp1 though vlite again and removed features such as -Welcome Center, Accessibility, Media Center and TV Tuners, Sidebar and gadgets, Parental Controls, Speech Support, Tablet etc....- WHICH IS spot_on..
Now i was wondering:huh::huh: :zip: that could you? if you hav any info about pre-installing programs like CCleaner' nero' vista' codec pack 1.52' using Vlite and so on.
do you know of any sites with guides and Tutorial s

:D Hi Da...,

Glad to be of help - great fun isn't it . You could try MFSN site as Shawn suggested, but there are no straightforward tutorials - it's more of a blog and I didn't find it very clear. Here are a couple of links - just the basics, which you know already as you've already done it - you just need to experiment, as I did.

Creating a vLite SP1 Install in 32,767 Easy Steps

Fit a Vista install on a single CD! - Team Tutorials

Sorry , don't think you can pre-install non Windows apps - Dino ( the developer ) used parts of WAIK so Windows stuff can be installed like SP1. Many people get bluescreens trying to integrate Windows Update cab files in the integrate section - I suggest letting Vista get the post SP1 updates after you've installed her - there's a lot of them so it takes a while. When SP2 comes out should be able to slipstream that too.

There is a free app. that lets you add files to a bootable disc - Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008 from :

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008 - Computeractive

ignore the date , it still downloads ( when you run it check get full version key it takes you to the site and they give you a free key).

Wonder if I could add post SP1 updates using that and see if Vista incorporates them at the updating part she does automatically during installation - maybe I'll try this next time.

Have fun - you might get thru a few blank dvd's

Hi mpc...,

I have used vLite a lot and three things that can cause this are :

1) Integrating updates in the "integrate" section - I get a bluescreen every time.

2) Not enough HDD space - look under the options tab and make sure the temp files will be located where there's plenty of space also uncheck "Load last session on browse ".

3) Corrupt SP1 download - not uncommon - you may have the right version but it could have been corrupted during download.

Don't forget to disconnect from the net while your antivirus is disabled - if you have separate antispyware, turn that off too.

Hope you get it going

Hi Brink
Thanks for your help in making the slipstream installation as simple as possible.
I followed your directions, but when I try to use the finished update disc, it won't let me.
It says I have a newer version than the one I'm trying to install.
Any Ideas??? Thanks Again

Hi RayJay, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm assuming that you mean you are trying to use it for a Repair (upgrade) install. When you made the slipstream DVD, did you include the correct 32 bit SP1 version and 32 bit Vista Home Premium Edition for your currently installed Vista?

What type of Vista installation DVD are you using to make the slipstream DVD with? (ex: Retail, OEM, Express, etc...)

Hi rayjay,

It looks like you are doing an upgrade installation rather than a clean install.

You need to boot from your newly created vLite disc then the upgrade option is greyed out and you will do a clean install - see Shawns excellent tutorial :

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html?ltr=C

Save any important documents etc. and make sure you have any drivers you need so you can format i.e. clean the partition you are going to install on.

If you haven't already made a second partition, you will just see a C: drive. I suggest making a second partition beforehand, name it D, and copy anything you want to keep onto it before reinstalling so you only need to format and then install on drive C:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95398-disk-management-shrink-partition.html

Hey Thanks guys,
I,am using Vista Home Primium 32 Bit, Asus P5W-Delux, The intel E6600 dual core 2.4, 4G Ram, Nvidia 8600GTs OC, and 3-500g satas. I used the 5 Lanugage stand alone Sp1 one. I Have The Home premium I got @circuit city.
I notice this on the Stand alone site:

Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs: I Have The Home premium I got @circuit city
  • The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
I have the sp1 through the windows update. Could this be causing the Issue?
I have used the repair before sp1 and it worked well for me. Would like to still be able to do this. Thanks for the help.

Rayjay,

I would use the SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center instead of the one from Windows Update for the slipstream DVD to see how it works for you instead.

Hi,

I have not tried this myself, but as it is possible to do a clean install with an upgrade disc, it must contain all the files.

Almost certainly it can be done.

When you have done the slipstream, your new dvd will still be an upgrade disc, though it contains SP1.

To use it to do a clean install, follow the steps in this tutorial

Hope it works out

Following the instructions, the Windows version increments to 6.0.6001.18000, but when I try to repair/"upgrade", the upgrade option is disabled (message states installation source is not newer than my current version of Windows). I did it twice and same results both times -- following steps exactly. It's Vista Business, 32-bit, if that matters.

Any thoughts on this? I'd uninstall SP1, but one of the reasons I'm trying to repair is that my Programs and Features control panel app stubbornly refuses to come up -- it flashes on the screen and then off, so I can't access the list of updates in order to uninstall... I'm REALLY trying to avoid a clean install.

I suspect this is because your existing install has been getting Windows Updates regularly i.e. post SP1, therefore it is more up to date e.g. with Windows Defender updates than the one you are trying to upgrade to.

Of course this wouldn't happen if you were doing a clean install.

Seems the only way would be to uninstall the updates from your existing installation first.

Since you can't do that, I think you will have to do a clean install - unless Shawn has any other ideas .

Although vLite has a function for integrating updates , I have never been able to make this work.

Seems like it would be quicker and less painful to do the clean install.

Severtki,

From what I gather from your post, you are trying to do a repair install using a SP1 slipstreamed disk onto same edition (i.e business ) that hasn't got SP1 - when you check in the system window what does it say?

This is different from b52bomer who I think wanted to do a clean install tho. he only had the upgrade disk.

He was not trying to repair the same Vista edition.

I do have SP1 plus all current Windows updates on Vista Business 32, and I'm trying to do a repair install using a slipstreamed SP1 disk of the same edition. My current Windows version is reported as 6.0.6001 (incremented for SP1), and I believe that's what the installer uses to check whether upgrade is available or not. I'd be a little surprised if other critical updates or hotfixes would by themselves cause upgrade to be disabled, but... who knows.

Since it takes me two or three weeks to install everything on a new build and customize to the way I like, a clean install would be very painful... What about a second, parallel installation to a different drive -- so I could use the old as I plug away at getting up and running on the new?
