I am SO glad I found this thread! I can't begin to express how much I need that, Ex_Brit. About two years ago I had to format due to an MBR infection that I couldn't get rid of. It was nasty piece of work and I lost almost all my data because my backups were infected too. After that I had no choice but to switch to Linux, because while the laptop came with a Vista key, it never came with the installation or ghost image DVD. So odd.

SP2 is preferable, right? I know I need Vista Home and that it has to be the 32 bit version (x86?), but I don't know if I need Home or Home Premium. I just don't remember. The product sticker has eroded a bit over the years, but thankfully the key itself was made from tougher ink.

Your product key decides what version you get. The DVD covers all Vista versions. I will email you shortly with Vista SP2 x86 (32-bit) download link.

You're most welcome. I did this because Microsoft's official public downloads are usually only for Vista SP1, why I'm not quite sure considering SP1 is no longer supported. Let us know if it works OK

I owe you so much. It worked out, I'm so happy! After two years of mucking about with Wine and Linux, FINALLY I have proper directx again. And office. And decent drivers for everything. 100mb network limit instead of 10. GPU drivers that WORK. Haha, I LOVE Windows! I've been feeling giddy all afternoon.

Just finished three and a half hours worth of windows updates, so I'm finally allowing myself a break. Next up is program installations and then a dive in the Windows Registry to optimize things a bit. It's a busy day today.

I just want to say that I am extremely grateful to you and the very existence of these forums. I think I'll stick around for awhile, maybe there are still some things for me to learn about Vista.

Yes and I assume you are proving they are genuine? I assure you they are, but as I'm, not handing our keys I don't think I'm breaking any rules.

No, just curious. I have updated my installation media. It adds a bit to the size, It also adds about 10 mins to the installation time, it sits for a while as it installs the included updates. Saves bloody hours overall.
