Richard, I didn't even realize that! Well good for the UK to have such high quality schools, and I hope that you don't have the same kinds of problems there with the 'kids' that we do in the US. The UK has always been very interested in higher learning, so hopefully the younger generations are, as well!

Only Because UK Is In Debt because of our old Prime Minister they are trying to make us smarter than the Current adult generation so we can get Jobs :huh:

Whatever the reason, it's still soooo important! Wish more folks realized it here.

I wish I had realized the importance of education a lot earlier than I have.

I absolutely love my school. Everyone here is reasonably clever (high entry standards) and everyone works hard, and so it is much easier to work hard. If someone saw me doing homework over lunch break, they are far more likely to join me rather than make a fuss. Revising earlier for exams is also much easer. I was always one to work hard, revise early, etc, and it got me into a good school where drugs and the other life are further away, and hard work much closer. Joy of joys, my brother has started to follow in my footsteps. Hopefully he will also get into my school. He is clever enough, he works hard enough, but some of these exams are how much tutoring one has. We never got tutoring, and I just scraped in, although now in top set for everything and excelling. I have even surprised many people who initially thought I was the scholar, when no body knew each other! Anyway, fingers crossed for my bother getting in!

Just got home, went to a fireworks display with some mates, was fun

I've been playing with the rep system, previously it was the same as SF but I'm tweaking it to reflect the fewer active members over here.

It may not be quite right yet but I'll keep an eye on it and tweak as necessary.

Minor rail disaster in our area! It is sort of close to me. Sort of. In the same county, but I have never been along that line, and am in the opposite direction to it. Basically a cement mixer crashed off a railway bridge, and was unfortunate enough to actually land on top of a train travelling underneath. Fortunately it looks as though no one has been too seriously injured: BBC News - Several injured as lorry falls on to a train

I saw that on the news! I hope everyone was okay. What surprised me is how can do you manage to drive off a bridge that high?

I don't know! One train fewer for us! They have now brought back the others now at least (during that really heavy snow, a tree fell across the train storage area overnight, and damaged four train units. We had to put up with old, mismatched, or tired (buses) trains for the next MONTH why they repaired windows and got more bodywork. Fortunately, that is an ancient red train. Losing one of the modern white or blue trains ruins travel experiences!

In 54 years, I have NEVER been on either a bus or a train. I've been in taxies maybe a half dozen times or so (though I can recall only two times and am only assuming there must have been others I've forgotten). I've been on many planes (but always used rental cars or my own after the flights). I imagine it's hard to believe, but it's the truth. I can't get around planes from time-to-time, but otherwise intensely dislike public transportation (even if considered safer than cars). I'd rather be in control of my own destiny and have the option to change my mind or stop or divert or whatever.

P.S. I HATE my ISP. I keep getting a very slow connection every day or so (or sometimes even a few times a day). Rebooting the modem sometimes helps, but someimes doesn't matter a whit. I know it's not me but them. I'm just about ready to change.

Interesting. I have been on a train Monday-Friday getting to school for ages!

I agree about being in control of your own destiny, Lorien, but putting that aside for a moment, trains are a lot of fun. Everything from the amazement of the power of a locomotive as it's approaching the station, to the fun of boarding and traveling, it's great. I have three little 3, 5 and 6 year old grandsons who LOVE riding on trains with me --- especially short rides that take just an hour or two.

Buses are a different story --- they can be pretty bumpy and tedious. I hadn't been on a bus since I was about 13 years old, in Manhattan (where I lived for a number of years). But I just took a bus this week, as a matter of fact, and it was actually kind of fun too. And I could not believe how crowded it was with very normal looking people. I guess I thought that only school kids, or very old people or very poor people took the bus (please, no disparagement meant!!!!) -- but not so at all. The bus was filled with all kinds of interesting people of all ages, and many were extremely well dressed and looked very savvy. Perhaps it's because we're finally starting to realize that driving one's car isn't always the best option. . .

But taxis --- Whew! Now you're really putting your life in somebody elses' hands, and it could really be someone in whose hands you don't want your life to be put, if you know what I mean! And if you really want to be scared, try taking a taxi in a country where there basically aren't any rules of the road! Some of those drivers are C R A Z Y, and if there are any driving rules, they sure weren't followed by some of the taxi drivers that I've been victim to over the years!
