What is a GSCE? Is it like the SAT's in America (tests used to determine your skills and used heavily to determine which college if any will accept you - but never asked for in terms of jobs) or more like the GED's (sort of replacements for a High School Diploma for people who drop out early and need proof they "completed high school" - but there you either have one or don't - you just keep trying until you pass and then you have it and nobody knows how many times you tried or what your scores were)? What does failing them REALLY mean? Can you take them again (and show only the passing ones) or do the fails stick with you forever even if you can and do retake and pass them? Does failing them really set you back as much as Shadow suggests (which seems pretty severe to me and I suppose i'd be worried if those were the consequences)?

A GCSE Stands for - General Certificate of Secondary Education,

It is the same as what you call as SATs Yes you can retake them but you have to pay (First Time is Free) Also it does stay with you but can be "Erased" If you take it again and get a better Grade

They are essential for Getting a Job at certain Places but you can work around them to get the Same Job it will Just cost you a lot of time

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Depending on my results I leave school with, depends on what college course I can get into, I'm predicted for all C's.
So, yeah, lol..

Oh Yeah forgot to add you can't really Fail them the Term "Fail" Means Getting below your Target

For Example Daniels Target is all C's meaning he must get at Least a C in his GCSE's To pass

The Grades:

  • A*
  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
  • U

U Is classes as "Ungraded" This would mean that the Student did not take the TEST Resulting in an automatic fail

Hope This Helps,

I feel slightly more worried! My school pressurises us so much! It is one of those high power school. If we get a single grade below an A, they expel us so that we do not damage their A Level Results. They came very first in the league table last year (last set of results) and plan to keep it! A B and we are expelled! A C and we are expelled with a very bad report (didn't do enough work, lazy, they actually threaten that sometimes)

If someone was very clever, they could look up the UK league tables, and from that work out my school's city, the two directions the trains go in, percentage chance of my other station, radiating outwards, get a student list, look for Richards and almost work out who I am!

Eeessh, that sounds too stressful for me, but on the other hand, you'd get the grades!
Apparently my Maths target has hit an A/B, so that's cool. ;)

Although in High School (I didn't go to a fancy prep school or anything like that) I did get all A's (I found it quite less than challenging), we certainly wouldn't be expelled if we didn't - far from it. Luckily, I had other activities to occupy my time and offer challenges (work at the hospital lab - for pay and volunteer both, martial arts - multi-level black belts in two separate disciplines (ninjutsu and aiki-jutsu), target shooting - expert marksman with several handguns (especially my customized Beretta), and some lesser interests). Remember, I'm 54 so no internet and no personal computers.

College (Johns Hopkins University) was quite different and a challenge all on its own. I did NOT get all A's there - much to my dismay. Luckily, even such a highly honored and famous university didn't go anywhere near that far - I KNOW everyone didn't get A's (though I believe some actually did) and I KNOW some who got D's or even F's and still they were allowed to stay and graduate (though for some even the school's reputation wasn't enough to get them into graduate school, law school, medical school or whatever - and even finding a decent job was tough going). I couldn't afford to continue education past college, but my grades did land me a good job with decent compensation and a reasonably good chance for advancement - which kept me occupied and quite successful until my mid-life crisis total change of careers (where I also did quite well though being self-employed and the owner makes it harder to measure success in the same way).

I guess my point is that while grades and advancement came relatively easy to me (as I'm sure grades do for you at the moment), I never was under the pressure you just described (except on my wedding day - LOL!). I don't know if that's the correct way to do things, but there is something to be said for the record of success of places like that (there aren't many here in the States, but of course there are some and while I could have "made the grades" I most certainly could not have afforded such a place nor would I have enjoyed the atmosphere and probably been unable to pursue the interests I did pursue in High School). Still, in the end, I'm sure you'll make it (unless you allow too many side-interests distract you to the point where even you can't keep up with the school work even if you do find it reasonably easy to the point where these other interests have grown to their present point). Just keep your priorities clear - completing your current education there at your age MUST take precedence over just about everything else except family and if they're good family, they'll agree.

You're right, it should be quite possible to "track you down" if someone wanted to do so (especially with a personal web-site which is easy enough to check) - though I'm not sure I see the point - you're Richard or Niemiro and that's all we really need to know (certainly all I need to know). VERY few of you know my real first name and AFAIK none my last name (except maybe - well, actually almost certainly - the Mods and Admins). I suppose one could now check university records knowing my date of birth and that I'm probably male (I am - though some think Lorien is female-sounding, it comes from the character in the TV series Babylon-5 which was my favorite show of all time) and from that and my current location and owning a computer-repair business here for about 20 years come pretty close to identifying me as well. Frankly, I don't really care if it does happen (well, perhaps a little) - but I do prefer to simply "hide" under my Lorien alias despite how much personal information I tend to disclose as I think of many of you as friends and it seems only natural as I tend to be honest and forthcoming with my friends.

EGAD! Another long post. LOL! Anyway, don't worry about it - just do what you need to do to stay there and graduate (and you know what that is and can easily do it if you keep your extra-curricular activities reasonable). I have faith you'll do the right thing and all will be fine.

My school look for straight A*s. Each individual subject has posters up declaring how many A*s they had in the last three years, declaring that they had the best AS level grades in 2009, proclaiming how many people took the subject etc. etc. Only VF member osholt knows who I really am, but then again he is in the same classes as I and at the same school.

Good for you, Richard. You know, despite the pressure that your school puts on its students, I am actually very glad to hear there are still schools like this in the US. As a country, we have, scholastically, fallen behind so many other countries, and most of our teenagers are so preoccupied with cultural trends, that I'm afraid we're headed for a real disaster. People don't realize how competitive and crucially important a good education is now --- yet most of them really could not care less about it. So long as they can wear the trendiest clothes, have the coolest things, get their current music/videos, and hang out with their friends, (not to mention drugs, sex, and all the edgy stuff) -- the rest is just so unimportant that it isn't worth much effort to pursue. Sadly, I think we've become very spoiled and complacent about being the number one country in the world --- which, if things don't start to change very soon, the US won't be number one for much longer.

When we think about it, we actually have a lot more online than we realise!

I say a lot about myself, my history, interests, things I've done, my feelings, and stuff like that - things you'd share with a friend. But I try to stay away from information like names, addresses, phone numbers, specific contact information, computer info that might be used to ID me or hack into my network, and the like - though all that info is out there maybe not on forums but somewhere (and likely a whole lot of places) but hopefully reasonably secure. I've never been the victim of identity theft of any sort. And may God have mercy on anyone who obtains and tries to use such information to harm me or my family - because they'll get none from me.

Of course, I do almost everything online - banking, financial info, credit card accounts, purchases, insurance details, taxes, - heck probably more I'm not thinking about right now - just about everything. I don't call my wife at work (except in a very serious emergency and at the moment I don't even remember when the last time was or what it was about but it's been well over a year and maybe two or more) - we email each other. I can't remember the last time I mailed a letter or anything (I don't even know how much a stamp is these days - LOL!). I throw out 90% of my mail without even opening it. I only answer the phone once voicemail confirms I know the person AND want to speak with him/her at that time. I don't personally store anything online - I'm not quite ready to trust that process yet. And while I do all financial transactions online, I keep records in Quicken and totally offline.

I don't know if it's entirely safe and secure and suspect I could be hacked by someone very good who wanted to personally target me (though why, I surely can't imagine - it's not like there's any reason at all someone like that would waste their efforts on people like us). But I do the best I can to defend against it and leave the rest to fate and luck and good fortune.

. . .

I did all of that too until just a couple of weeks ago when I got hacked in PAYPAL of all places. For those who aren't familiar with PayPal, it's an international service set up to be uber-super-secure and is a major payment paying + receiving vehicle for such e-vendors as eBay and many others!

Well, apparently it isn't so secure because unbeknownst to me, someone hacked into PayPal and conducted a $780 transaction using my bank account. Good news - bad news. The good news was that PayPal notified me that "something was wrong" with my account and that I needed to look into it, but the bad news was that although PayPal claimed it had reversed the payment, it actually didn't do anything. Fortunately, I took the additional step of contacting my bank and doing a "stop-payment" --- otherwise I'd be out the $780 (with no recourse)!

Needless to say, I deleted all my banking information and cancelled my PayPal account --- but really, people are SO SOPHISTICATED nowadays, this could happen with pretty much any site, no matter how secure the designers think it is!

PS This wasn't the first time I had been the victim of identity theft either. My credit card has been hacked twice in the last couple of years. Wow!

Richard, I didn't even realize that! Well good for the UK to have such high quality schools, and I hope that you don't have the same kinds of problems there with the 'kids' that we do in the US. The UK has always been very interested in higher learning, so hopefully the younger generations are, as well!

Only Because UK Is In Debt because of our old Prime Minister they are trying to make us smarter than the Current adult generation so we can get Jobs
