O.K., so he didn't pay for it....but his friend told him he did the 30 day trial thing and it just never expired.

Ours was put on May 29, so it's still within the 30 days. Should I get rid of it, or is it o.k.?

O.K., thanks. Another question. I talked with his friend's Mom again and she said she had done some looking on his computer account. She didn't find anything bad, but didn't find Torrent, either. I find that odd. Because I know he told my son about it...that's not to say he had it, I guess....just that he knew about it. But if you have Torrent....is it possible to name it something else? I know you can rename files, but isn't this a program? You can't rename programs, can you? Is there any way for her to find torrent if he had it in the past or if he's hidden it--if that's even possible.

Thanks, Dee

My Computer

A Torrent is a way to download files they could be .avi or .wmv (usually) The program he would need to download them would be something like u-torrent. They would look like any other video file.
You could go to any folder and tools, folder options, view and uncheck don't show hidden files. Then go to computer local disc c:/program files
Look here for U-Torrent or similar

BUT, you can get portable versions of the torrent software, such as utorrent which is easily downloadable from:

PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives

So if you go into my computer, and in the search box type torrent, see what comes up. If he has renamed the file then it is unlikely that you will find it, try looking for files that you know he hasn't got. Remember it is legal to make backups of your own DVDs, so if you know he hasn't got that DVD, then you can be quite sure that it is illegal (unless he has bought a download from online services such as itunes).

Yeah, that's one way I found my son's torrent files. But she couldn't find any doing a "torrent" search. I didn't know if it was even possible to re-name a whole program (not just the files downloaded for it).

Oh, you could certainly change the name of the folder in program files and the executable (.exe file) itself, but I don't know about the software dependencies as they may have to rely on the fact that it is in for example the utorrent folder. If he hasn't got many programs installed, then you could look through the folders in search for an icon similar to these:

images

I don't know what the top right image is, but the top left is uTorrent, the bottom left is Bittorrent and the bottom right is Vuze.

These are some of the most popular torrent clients, and unless your son has changed the icon of the program, then it should have one of these icons.

If the program isn't listed as being installed on the control panel list, then perhaps he has a portable version like I said earlier. Portable software doesn't have to be installed (and won't show up on the installed programs list). There is a possibility that he has downloaded a portable version and is hiding it somewhere in his computer.

Tom

EDIT: The icon of the lever is of a piece of software called Transmission

For your information the top right icon is for Transmission.

Transmission, as far as I am aware, is a Mac only Torrent app so if that appears on your PC I would get very suspicious.

Do I need to edit the host file if I uncheck UTorrent at the firewall? When I went to uncheck it at the firewall, it wasn't checked....which I thought was odd. Shouldn't you not be able to use utorrent if it's not checked?

I guess I'm not sure exactly what editing the host file means.......

My Computer

Stopping uTorrent from accessing the internet is a good start, but this wont stop him using alternative torrent clients (software). Sorry, let me explain

The hosts file is what a computer uses as a reference when trying to connect to a website. If you tell it that a website is located somewhere else, then it will try to go there instead. What I have made for you, is a host file with all (well a lot of them) of the torrent sites in it, and now when he tries to access a torrent site, he will be displayed a screen saying:

Internet explorer cannot display this page

This is because I have set the computer to find the website on the his computer. Basically the request to the website is coming back to his computer, and not to the actual website.

My hosts file post is here:

http://www.vistax64.com/system-security/279660-teens-parental-controls-safe-mode-6.html

Its the first post. If you need any more explanation, then let me know and I would be happy to help :)

Good luck!

O.K., Tom....I get it now. Thanks so much. I'll do that.

Now...theoretically...I'm not saying I'd trust it to....but theoretically.....shouldn't parental controls (Vista's or Net Nanny or similar) block torrent sites? The list that you made....is that sites like "KickAss torrents" and such? Shouldn't they be blocked?

Theoretically? :sarc:
