SP2 RC for Vista and Server 2008 goes public

Microsoft today released the Release Candidate build of Service Pack 2 (6002.16670.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to the public. You can grab the standalone installer package from the Microsoft Download Center for 32-bit five languages and 32-bit all languages, 64-bit five languages and 64-bit all languages, as well as Itanium five languages and Itanium all languages. If you have Vista in English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, download the five languages package, otherwise get the larger "all language" version. There is also a five language and an all language.iso image available, as well as a patch that will allow you to get it via Windows Update. While this is a public release, it is still a Release Candidate, and Microsoft is recommending that the average customer "wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack" and reminding testers that "a Service Pack is not a feature release—we are not looking for new feature suggestions, only SP2 regressions, crashes, and confirmation of fixes we've made will be considered for this milestone."

To remove SP2 RC you must go to 'Installed Updates'. You can do this in a variety of ways but the most straightforward is to go to the 'Add/Remove Programs' Control Panel Applet and select 'View Installed Updates' from the left hand pane.

You can then identify 'Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465)' and de-install it.

Agreed - the SP2 RC is on a par with Windows 7 in terms of speed and the beneficial effect on processor operation.

It isn't quite as good, but that is probably more to do with the larger number of background apps I have running on what is my production partition, as opposed to the Windows 7 partition which is a pure beta trial and so has fewer applications installed.

i tried that route. On vista I disabled all startup's, uninstalled windowblinds, antivirus/firewall (bitdefender).
the idle load after startup and waiting for a few min's for everything to settle down vista sp2 rc ran as next to 0% load as possible. The incidental spikes gives it an average of 3% idle load and a coretemp of 32C.
This is exactly what i get on a virgin win7 7048.

The same with sp1 it ran idle at 10% average with spikes to 40%
Under sp1 i sometimes had it running idle and all 4 cores jumped to 35%

I have run across a problem with SP2 RC, it doesn't awaken the video from hibernation.

Mine doesn't come out of hibernation at all even if i put it to sleep with nothing running. It just sits there at the logon screen.

do you know if this will fix the problems with nvlddmkm.sys file? :D i hope so, had huge problems with that since im using nVidia geforce 8800 ultra ;)

That's a good question but I don't think the problem was ever related to Windows but more with Nvidia. They seemed to manage a solution with the newer 200 series models because I haven't received this bsod error once yet.

Actaully no one quite knows who this issue belongs to, although I'm beginning to lean towards both video card companies. Also this issue affects ATI users as well. http://www.vistax64.com/graphic-cards/195706-display-driver-has-stopped-working-saga.html#post901985

Hopefully I'm wrong and Microsoft has found a fix, but I doubt it as I now think this has something to do with drivers or heating issues with both company's graphic cards.

Just my two cents.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the only solution that works, replace the video card. I too had to do the same when I had the problem about a year ago. This is also why I say it's a heating issue as well. You will see quite a few people have "replaced" their video card and have gotten rid of the problem.
