SP2 RC for Vista and Server 2008 goes public

Microsoft today released the Release Candidate build of Service Pack 2 (6002.16670.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to the public. You can grab the standalone installer package from the Microsoft Download Center for 32-bit five languages and 32-bit all languages, 64-bit five languages and 64-bit all languages, as well as Itanium five languages and Itanium all languages. If you have Vista in English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, download the five languages package, otherwise get the larger "all language" version. There is also a five language and an all language.iso image available, as well as a patch that will allow you to get it via Windows Update. While this is a public release, it is still a Release Candidate, and Microsoft is recommending that the average customer "wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack" and reminding testers that "a Service Pack is not a feature release—we are not looking for new feature suggestions, only SP2 regressions, crashes, and confirmation of fixes we've made will be considered for this milestone."

Your SP2 is not special. You simply forgot ie8 was already installed, or someone else put it on the computer.

Speaking for myself yes. Never installed ie8 on vista. Came with sp2.

IE8 does not come with SP2.

I don't see how, Windows 7 installs IE8 but it is still in beta and SP2 service pack for Vista hasn't gone final yet so is only installed if you install the beta. I doubt very much if you can buy a new machine yet that comes with Vista SP2 already installed.

well its not officially out so no chance will they include it in any pack sold...

same with windows 7 the os isent even officially out so yes it has the ie 8. its not going to come with ie 7 no way..

Thanks for clearing that up. Since I hadn't installed SP2, I wasn't sure if IE8 came with it or not. Now I know.

Nonetheless, I have read where some have had performance issues with Internet Explorer after upgrading to SP2. - Windows Vista Service Pack 2: Microsoft TechNet Forums.

As for Windows 7, IE8 is installed with it.

Nop ....IE8 is a browser ...Nothing to do with Vista Sp2 ...(Do not come with Sp2)
Only new Wds 7 .... and MS gives you the option to remove it.
I installed Sp2 and still use IE 7 ...works great ......

Here are some improvment that I see....:

1/ Start up ...... much faster
2/ log on internet .......super fast ..
3/ wake up and log back in wireless ........ almost instantly .
4/ files pull up and open .......super fast..
5/ Office 2007 ....works really good now ...super fast...

So far so good .....will post back if anything comes up.....

The problem is...you presume that I'm "stuck" with IE when In fact I'd rather use IE over other existing browsers.

I've got Opera, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari all loaded but still prefer IE. My choice.

Currently, only the SP2 Release Candidate is available, and it is for all editions of Vista. When the final is released, it will also be for all editiosn of Vista. I will let you know when the final is released.

sorry, i'll amend: the torrent i got included the IE8.
But final or not, SP2 RC performs on my box on par with win 7 in dualboot.
Whilst SP2 v275 almost needed liquid nitro to run.

Agreed - the SP2 RC is on a par with Windows 7 in terms of speed and the beneficial effect on processor operation.

It isn't quite as good, but that is probably more to do with the larger number of background apps I have running on what is my production partition, as opposed to the Windows 7 partition which is a pure beta trial and so has fewer applications installed.

Am I being stupid, or has Computer Management disappeared from the 'Accessories / System Tools' start menu? The only way I can find it now is is by typing 'compmgmt.msc' in the Run menu.
