SP2 RC for Vista and Server 2008 goes public

Microsoft today released the Release Candidate build of Service Pack 2 (6002.16670.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to the public. You can grab the standalone installer package from the Microsoft Download Center for 32-bit five languages and 32-bit all languages, 64-bit five languages and 64-bit all languages, as well as Itanium five languages and Itanium all languages. If you have Vista in English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, download the five languages package, otherwise get the larger "all language" version. There is also a five language and an all language.iso image available, as well as a patch that will allow you to get it via Windows Update. While this is a public release, it is still a Release Candidate, and Microsoft is recommending that the average customer "wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack" and reminding testers that "a Service Pack is not a feature release—we are not looking for new feature suggestions, only SP2 regressions, crashes, and confirmation of fixes we've made will be considered for this milestone."

No, that's the only place it says evaluation. I'm not having any issues of any kind; but I spend a lot of my time in Windows 7 "evaluating" that.

I'm also about to uninstall the SP2 RC as I found out what I was after already, but I will install the final SP2 when it's made available.

Later  Ted

Yeah, I think I'll hold of installing SP2 till final.

As to Windows 7, I installed back in Jan 09? and haven't messed with it since. I guess I should see what all the hoopla is about.

When I get the urge, I'll play with it. Hmmm...the one I have was released in early Jan. Don't think its the one you list though. This one..

But back on the subject of SP2 - I'm still debating on whether to try it or not. On the one hand, I've got Vista working just fine as is, on the other hand, I'm curious to see what SP2 has to offer in terms of performance and fixing those little nagging bugs that pop up every once in a while - like forgetting folder settings, programs suddenly stop working, Power Management issues. Does SP2 beta fix these??? Will it create more issues?

That's my dilemma.

having installed sp2 RC i found that processor idle load dropped significantly. Also idle core temp dropped by about 3 to 5 C

Running exactly the same configuration before SP2 with SP1 my average load was around 15% just sitting there.
After SP2 RC this dropped to around 9%, whit a drop of coretemp obviously.

I have a dualboot with win 7 x64 build 7048, vista sp2 RC runs on par with windows 7. I'd hazard a guess windows 7 optimizations got branched into SP2

IE8 is a disasterarea, but for the rest SP2 seems a solid improvement.

IE8 crashes all over the place. I dont even use it normally, only to check my livemail box. Frequently i sat there staring at a frozen loginscreen.
Made me install Live Mail next ot my normal emailclient.

As the processor works harder by the demand it generates more heat. In idle there are always background threads active. So when the temperature drops its because there's less demand on the processor.

Which implies that the core background threads have been optimized if the the temperature drops after installing a SP.

Hope that clears it up

IE8 crashes all over the place.

That's the one constant complaint I hear about installing SP2...IE performance problems.

I've also I added IE8 (Beta) to XP, and even there IE8 crashes.

And for the record, I'm an exclusive IE user. With that said, I do hope and pray Microsoft sorts IE8's problems before final release.
