Go into safe mode and delete those folders, then reboot. :)

You mean delete them from the Program Data folder? I just ran Advanced Disc Cleaner and at the end of the scan there was a list of files . I selected all and deleted all but 10, which ADC said were beiing used by another program. the name of the file was:
mcssubdb.bak C:/Program Data/McAfee?mcs/cache

While looking in the Program data folder there were also folder of the following programs that I've uninstalled in addition to the McAfee: Norton, NortonInstaller, PC Doctor (have no idea where that one came from), and PKWARE. Are all of these safe to delete?
Also what's the purpose of using safe mode? Will safe mode not allow me to delete a necessary file?

Safe mode doesn't usually allow all drivers to load up ... so deleting is made easier.
See if you can take ownership ... then boot into safemode, (right click, run as Administrator) rename the folder to something like mac.old and delete the folder. Reboot.

Not sure what you mean by "take ownership". Then after I boot into safe mode, right click on what? Can I delete all of the folders I named? Thanks.

Hello Fred,

Booting into Safe Mode does not run most programs, and so the programs that are locking the files you are trying to delete, probably will not be running, and so you can probably delete them fine in Safe Mode without these programs locking them.

If you have uninstalled a program via Add/Remove Programs, then yes you can remove the program's folder in Program Data.

To take ownership of a file or folder, right click on the file or folder you want to delete, and follow these instructions. You will have to do this individually for each file/folder you want to delete:

  • Navigate to the file/folder and right click on it and select Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.
Once you are in Safe Mode, and have taken ownership of the file or folder you want to delete, you should be able to now delete the file/folder.

Richard

Is it ok to just go to folder options then open the program data folder and delete these folders if allowed, without going into safe mode etc. Also, are these folders affecting the performance of my computer. IOW, what's the consequence of just leaving them alone?

If the folders delete without Safe Mode, then fine. These folders should have a very negligible impact on performance (no impact at all), and could I believe be left without any problems, though you should check with Jacee, as she is more of an expert than I.

If they delete in regular mode, fine. Why would you want to leave something that takes up space on your computer with no function? ;)
