I tried to help "Sunni", but she posted once from the Vista general group and then none appeared over there. I thought I read and have seen that posts here are mirrored there, but apparently Sunni's disappeared after her first one. It's a little like Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Lost after someone turns that wheel in the hatch.
So from what I've read, and now my head is throbbing a bit, Sunni
1) Elected not to call a neighbor and borrow their DVD writer to burn a .iso from the link I gave her from Neosmart. In doing so, she eclipsed her chances of recovering everything.
2) Sunni then tried to (and I learned this from SIW2 because I didn't see it in her posts, use a recovery DVD or partition but recovery might or might not have happened.
3) Sunni has been looking for her saved material in a Windows.old folder which might have been renamed.
4) Sunni apparently got a .iso of Office Pro (my first guess is from a torrent) but didn't realize she would have to burn the .iso to a DVD, so she abandoned that venture because she didn't have a burner handy.
5) Because she needed Office Sunni then elected to go to http://office.microsoft.com and download a 60 day free trial of Office 2007 Pro (always a good move if you need Office in a hurry).
6) Now Sunni is turning to her school work with her download Office 2007.
There seems to be some question as to whether Sunni can use the recovery apps that S1W2 has found for her to recover what she might have formatted. That will be interesting. My experience with "undelete" type apps hasn't been a great one, but maybe they'll show up. I read S1W2s comments that these had been pretty impressive for free apps.
If in fact, Windows.old or her old files are around, one useful way to find them (and I hope you see this Sunni since your posts never showed up in Vista General (I guess you opted for them to only show up here after the first one) is to simply type C:\ in any IE address bar and when the folder opens click size. If Sunni's old files are around, they should be pretty hefty in size and show up at the top.
When Sunni tries to show all folders, I hope after she types control folders in the run box>view>she 1) puts a radio button in "show hidden files, folders and drives" and 2) removes the checkmark from 2) hide protected operating systems and files and then she has a much better chance of finding a folder that she hasn't been able to find.
Good luck Sunni--your posts have been hard to find after the first one showed on Vista general, and I don't know why if this forum is supposedly mirrored there. I hope it works out and you ace your finals this weekend.
I'd take a swing at any more problems if I saw 'em.
Best,
CH
I had one other thought. If Sunni tries SIW2's free apps to recover material on her HD after it might have been formatted, and it shows up, and she can use a friend's burner, she might be able to burn the Startup Repair Disk from Neosmart and fix her system recovering everything--all her files and her original OEM Office installation.
