Key points here for PCs:
Run the vast majority of software available today.
Will run on vast majority of hardware available today.
Upgrades can be difficult and problems often arise (that's why this forum exists).
Most popular OS in the world.
More suseptable to viruses etc ( because there are more for windows than Mac)
Most configurable OS.
Arguabley less stable than Mac.
Cheaper and more variety in hardware.

Personally I'm a Mac but I run 'Best of Both Worlds' known to most as Boot Camp. :p

Hope this is of some help and I'm not just stating the obvious. :)

- A virus is a virus - equally difficult to remove. Mac gets less malware attacks because it is a less interesting target - only 10% of PC in terms of users.

- PC has about 10 times more applications than Mac.

- But the main point is price. PC costs half of a Mac for about the same thing.

- And who cares whether a Mac lasts for 10 years - in 3 years it is old iron too.

Again, there is no difference. A virus is a virus. There can be tough ones on either system or just "teasers".

PC Gaming > Mac Gaming

Mac's are way over priced, you can get PC with compairable performance for 1/2 the price. literally

As mentioned before, 90% of the worlds computer users use PC.

I would argue the PC is less stable then Mac

And as for user friendly, in my opinion its all down to the users tech level. Any half way computer savy person can work with a PC just fine.

lol and one i cant forget, why would you buy a product from a company thats entire marketing strategy is based off down playing its competition and not stressing the strenths of its own product.

fire away mac fans

Justification of cost is a totally valid reason

However upgrading in terms of operating systems is a doddle compared to Windows (I've been there, done that).

Upgrading in terms of hardware may be limited to RAM and Hard Drive (which I would like to point out is the same as most NoteBooks) in most models but if you buy the Mac Pro it is easy to upgrade almost everything (far easier to remove than in most PCs due to more intuitive design); I admit that what you can upgrade it to is slightly limited by drivers etc. but a lot of the new major GPUs etc. are supported by Mac now a days.

True....my main issue is the cost. It just doesn't seem sensible to me. Building my own pc, for far less (like 1/3rd the cost) is enough to keep me away from a mac. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with them, I could just never get myself to pay that much for something like that.

Put it this way:~

You want to buy a Phone...

You have a choice:~

1. Windows phone. (does everything you want and more has the latest tech and not very problematic. Cheap and not the greatest looks but is fully functional. Goes out of date within 2 years so you can buy a new one again at a reasonable price on a regular basis).

2. Ipod phone. (does mostly everything and has a lot of great apps. The latest tech and easy to use. Expensive to buy, and looks great. Is out of date after 1 year and you have to buy a new one as soon as you can afford a new one. So you can't buy a new one on a regular basis. [Unless your well off]).

So, its pretty much the same for computers. The Ipod fad infatuation will deplete over time as people come to terms with the reality that it's just a glorified phone for them personally. And, the elite will only require one.
Reality is that the economical one, will be for people like myself (The masses) on a budget. The iPhone and the iMac are just expensive models of the ordinary phone and the ordinary PC. We all buy what we can afford and some people just like to stretch them selves to afford that 1 personal thing that is a bit more expensive than the norm.
I love the iPhone but I can only afford the PC. (Think about it!)

What is your teachers preference?

If they are an Apple fan, you'll have your work cut out for you, regardless of how well presented your argument is. (sub-conscious bias)

Highlight every negative weakness, quietly acknowledge the PC's flaws - but back up the PC flaws with a negative counterpoint example of the MAC counterpart.

Break the argument down into main categories and sub-categories: (for example)

Main Category:

Components / actual hardware.

The exact same components found in Macs are used in PC's as well. Aside from the aesthetics (looks), all the internals are the same. Mac hardware is just as prone to failure as PC hardware.

Sub-Category

Differentiate between Desktop models and laptop models.

The only real difference is you are paying a premium price for the brand name and image.

There are also less configurable / upgrade options in the desktop range.

Acknowledge the cost of pre-built PC's like Dells etc, but highlight the wider available options at a lot more varying price points. Also, talk up the 'build / configure it yourself' cost angle.

PC laptops have a wider range of cost vs performance options than Mac's do as well.

Main Category

The Operating system/s.

Acknowledge the overall ease of use of a Mac, but also acknowledge the equal ease of use of a Windows based PC as well.

When it comes to cost, A counterpoint argument to the higher cost of a Windows disk vs an OSX disc is that you have basically already paid a high price for OSX when purchasing the hardware.

Feel free to mention Linux distributions as even cheaper option for an OS - much easier to install linux on a PC than it is on a Mac.

Sub-Category

Applications.

Proprietary and freeware.

Mac's have built in features, so too does windows.

But there is also a much wider choice in Proprietary software (paid for) and freeware (free / open source) available for Windows than there is for Mac. The same goes for Linux

Main Category

Viruses / malware.

Mac's aren't immune to viruses / malware. The main reason Windows based PC's have a lot more targeted infections is because it has a much higher marketshare / user base than Macs.

Which is why no-one can really be bothered with widespread Mac infections.

Exactly!
THAT is a perfect example of what I hear all the time about Mac vs PC, and people don't grasp the facts.
It's the same reason IE gets very bad press when it comes to vulnerabilities and issues. It's because it is more widely used than other browsers, so of course it's going to be exploited more. ( I know a Mac fanboy, and he insists his Mac is king.)

not great compared to other people..
Viruses / malware.

Mac's aren't immune to viruses / malware. The main reason Windows based PC's have a lot more targeted infections is because it has a much higher marketshare / user base than Macs.

Which is why no-one can really be bothered with widespread Mac infections.

When is this debate?

I'm a Mac about 50% of the time but because I'm super paranoyed if I'm download a Windows installer package off the web I always, where possible, download it on Mac run it through my Mac's antivirus which detects both Mac and Windows viruses; so I neutralise any problems before they can even be called a threat.

The paranoyed one; aka Oli.
