Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version

Hi,
Would I ensure getting the correct driver update if I used the facility for updating drivers in device manager ?

Control Panel > Device Manager > Sound ,video and game controllers > Realtek High Definition Audio > Driver tab > Update Driver

I currently have Version 6.0.1.5548 dated 1/15/2008

Or, should I practice "If it ain't broke don't fix it". My sound seems OK to me.

Hello Frank,

I've never had that get the correct or latest driver for me. Personally, I'd download and install the 2.71 version. If for some reason it causes issues, then you could just roll back to your 6.0.1.5548 version.

I did the install successfully. I did have one heart skipping moment- during the second phase, install, I got a message that I needed to buy a sound card!. The install did finish and I do have sound. The version is 6.0.1.6873.

Would this driver apply to a AC97 sound system? Note that I have downloaded drivers from Realtek and Vista wouldn't install them because they are unsigned.

No, that is for HD audio only. For the latest (cough, cough) AC'97 driver, see Realtek. Note that this driver is very old (at 2009/9/7), and it doesn't appear that Realtek are planning on any further updates to it.

I have Windows 8.1 and an Asus Sabertooth Z77 MotherBoard with the Realtek ALC892 chip. I upgraded to the latest Asus posted Windows 8.1 drivers as soon as they released them. They are version 6017032 and dated October and they seem ok. Since then Realtek has released 2 driver updates on their official site so I tried them.


I had to revert back to the Asus drivers because when I used the new Realtek drivers all my settings such as 5.1, 7.1, quad etc.. get changed around and sound comes out of any speaker it seems it shouldn't and stops coming out of those it should and the control panel shows the wrong configuration for each setting. It's as if the output mapping got scrambled somehow.

Am I destined to use only the drivers Asus provides now even though the Realtek drivers are supposed to be universal for my audio chip and they are newer?

That's what I thought but as mentioned in the post I can't.

I think more detail is needed in order for us to better help you. Do you receive any error messages? What does device manager show?

Well the foremost issue that comes to mind is, when I install the latest driver from the Realtek site and I go to set my speakers to 5.1 instead of showing 2 fronts and 2 rears it shows 2 fronts and 2 sides and of course I have no sides so in the test all I get is the 2 fronts, center and sub woofer. If I set it to 7.1 I see all 7 and get sound from the rears when I do the surround test but nothing from the rears when I turn on speaker fill. As I said it seems like all the speaker mapping is screwed up. I don't know how else to describe it. I can always re-install them and write down everything I see.

According to Realtek it's not a bug but something they may fix in the next revision. Apparently with 5.1 they do not call them rear or side speakers but satellites and all I needed to do was plug the "rear" speaker plug into the "side" speaker jack and the current drivers will work exactly as the old 5.1 setting did and in fact it does. It's just the pictures and speaker output mapping that I am used to that is backwards. They said it's to add more compatibility to analog 7.1 speakers.

Actually I think there is a problem beyond my issue with these drivers. Something was severely bogging down my PC and according to ProcMon is was the resident manager and the Realtek service. I did 3 clean swaps of both the current Asus drivers and the newest Realtek drivers and sure enough it's the new Realtek drivers. I messaged Realtek again about this. In the mean time Ulrich, one of the techs of the Asus VIP forums, said they are aware of some issues with Realtek's new driver release and said to use the Asus one for now and check with Realtek and if I have no problems just keep using the Asus one if it works. I think I am going to do one last clean install of the Asus drivers and see what Realtek says.

If it's a known issue with the driver then I don't think we can do much to help other than suggest one that works ... Either way I am sure Shawn will post the new driver as it is released
