CHKDSK damages Partition Table

If you ever find yourself in the same situation having to chill a drive to access it, you might consider buying one of those $15 USA/PATA/SATA adapters. That way you can remove the drive from the machine, attach it to the adapter, and slip it into a ziplock bag that you can place into an ice/water bath. You can boot your machine from a live CD/DVD/USB to gain access to it. Never tried this myself, though. I've got a couple of those adapters and I've always thought I'd give that a shot if I thought there was a need.

I thought of that but didn't want to chance putting water anywhere near the computer or the drive. Especially since I was using my girlfriend's computer to copy the files.

Yeah, it would be a delicate operation. Don't want the kids playing around when trying this!

Maybe you could try accessing them offline, via a bootable CD/DVD/USB. That'll get you around any problems your installed OS might be having with the drive (including NTFS security).

I remember your post about using XP to try and delete. Did you also try a chkdsk?

Might be worth a shot using a Linux CD/DVD to see what you might be able to do with it. You might try this:

As you're determined to get this thing going again (in order to move a working copy of it), it might be worthwhile to work on a clone of it. That'll give you the opportunity to start over if you need to.

By the way, connecting that drive to the XP machine should have nothing to do with the aftereffects stated here:

I realize that. It's the title of the thread (kind of hard to miss that), and the reason I read it in the first place. I meant running chkdsk while connected to the XP machine. Thought I read that while connected to the XP machine all you tried to do was to delete the files in question.

It probably wouldn't have made a difference. But you never know, it's worth a shot. Really think you should try a non-Windows OS. Clone it first so you can go back if need be.

Hello NoelDP!!!

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window
run the following three commands, and then leave the window open

TAKEOWN /F C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\dlmanifests /R /A
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\dmanifests /grant:r Administrators:(F) /T
MD C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\dlmanifests\TEMP03

Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\migwiz folder
order the file list in date order by clicking on the column header
highlight all files with the date of 5th Jan 2008
right-click on the highlight and select Cut
right-click on the TEMP03 folder and select Paste

Close all windows apart from the Command Prompt
run the following Command

CHKDSK C: /F

answer Y to the request to run on reboot.
close the window, and reboot.

CHKDSK should run, and will probably reboot again.
once Windows is up, open a Command Prompt window, and run the following commands

DIR C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\dlmanifests /od >>%userprofile%\desktop\noeldir.txt
DIR C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\dlmanifests\TEMP03 >>%userprofile%\desktop\noeldir.txt

This will create a new file on your desktop 'noeldir.txt' - attach the file, together with a new copy of the latest WININIT event (for the CHKDSK results) to a response and await my feedback before doing ANYTHING else!

I am at this point now. I managed to use the Ultimate Boot CD to boot up and then used Parted Magic to go in and delete the files. Then I booted up using a Windows Vista Start-up Disk because I didn't know if the missing files would screw up the boot process. Windows had to repair the partition (again) but I requested the CHKDSK before rebooting, then had to repeat the process.

Anyway, attached are the files you requested. As I was saying, not all of the files were from the same date, so CHKDSK still found those 5 files.

It doesn't look like the files I deleted got replaced.

I'll upload a file to run (if necessary) to delete any found 'repaired' files
run that if necessary, and the next job is to run another CHKDSK, and see if the files are rebuilt again
run the CHKDSK C: /F and afterward, run

DIR C:\Windows\System32\migwiz /od >>%userprofile%\desktop\noeldir2.txt

This will create a second file - attach that to a reply and wait.
In theory, the second one should be clear, and we can then reset the permissions and ownership on the remaining files, run the SFC to replace the missing files, and check that all files are present and correct, and the system functions properly


Again - please ask questions before committing, if I've not been clear!

...if we do find that we missed any files, and this process works, we can repeat it later with new parameters

I await your feedback. I think we are now so much closer now that I found a way to delete those files.

We took care of the SFC thing but I'll run another one. The WININIT log is attached to the last post per your instructions. I had to make myself familiar with what you said too. I've been trying to find a way to delete those files and finally got it.

With that many repairs, Windows almost certainly will need further massaging to get it right.

Please run a CheckSUR scan and post the log, then run another SFC scan and post the new CBS log, and we'll see where we are then.

It looks like TrustedInstaller crashed before completing the SFC repairs properly - and the current CBS log is huge, despite having no SFC data in it.
Please try running an offline SFC - it may be able to complete what the online one can't




Reboot thecomputer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - oneoption should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.



Log into yournormal account.

You'll get a setof options - pick the Command Prompt one.

At the commandprompt, type DIR C:\

- if we're luckythis will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including theProgram Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.

If not, try D:\or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)

then type thefollowing command



sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\/OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows



where<drive> is the letter you found above.



Wait for thecommand to complete. (make a note of the response!).



Once it has,type EXIT and the pick the option toreboot.


then run another online SFC, and post the new logs

My Advanced Boot Menu does not contain an option to Repair My Computer. I tried booting to the starter disk, but then it didn't find a partition on the boot drive again. I did a start-up repair and then went to a command prompt before the reboot, but it wouldn't run the offline command until I rebooted.

Oddly, if I hit escape at the Advanced Boot Menu, I get to a menu to choose my operating system of which there is only one - Windows Vista (recovered).

Just for kicks, I ran the SFC online again and it ended with this:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

I've attached the log, but edited out any text prior to this run. I've also attached completed CheckSUR and CheckSUR.persist log files.

While the SFC was running, I also checked the files in the DLMANIFESTS folder and all the files I deleted have returned.

I was just letting you know this while I try to get back to that command prompt and run the offline SFC for you. I'm also going to run a chkdsk /f to see what files are still giving me a problem.

Okay, so with all the rebooting taking place, I got a little impatient. I could not run an SFC offline. There is no repair option in my advanced boot menu, and the repair startup command prompt wouldn't let the program run. It kept giving me this message:

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run SFC again."

There were no repairs pending that I knew of but I always got that message. Since the last CHKDSK had produced the same problem with the 5 files we hadn't removed before, I went ahead and copied them to the TEMP03 folder and deleted them from the DLMANIFESTS folder. Then I deleted the full CBS.log file.

I rebooted the computer and ran a normal SFC /scannow, than re-ran the CheckSUR again. All three of those logs are attached. The CBS.log file was 6 MB so I zipped it. Then I ran a CHKDSK on next reboot and rebooted. I've attached the WININIT text from the event viewer.

CHKDSK did not find those 5 files again. All 70 of the files that were removed from the DLMANIFESTS folder are now back on their own.

Do the log files reveal anything? Is there something else you need to see to determine if everything is fixed?

SFC claims to have fixed all of them - at least for now!

CheckSUR is clear - which I think should check the .man files at least.
What are the dates on the recovered files?

The recovered files are the same dates as the files that were originally there. All of them appear to have been returned. CHKDSK no longer reports those index files being removed and the orphans being recovered. I've attached a manfiles.txt file to show you the TEMP03 folder with all the files I removed from the DLMANIFESTS folder and a list of the current DLMANIFESTS folder.

I also ran SFC and included a CBS.log file followed by another CheckSUR set and another WININIT.log. Then after another couple of reboots, I re-ran the SFC. All files are attached. It appears the SFC is now repairing files we've never seen referenced previously. It keeps repairing the same 2 files, 6 times each.

We seem to be so very close to being done. And to top it off, we found a very nice fix to the problem of the MFT double-pointing (as it were) to files.
