I can't gain permission to access a hard drive that has back data on it.
Tried to upgrade BIOS success!
Killed my OS?
Reinstalled my OS success!
Now I can't access my 2nd HDD?
I am willing to format and start with a clean HDD but I need to get some files off of it first:eek:
I have tried several things but none see to work.
Please help:cry:
I have never posted before so if you need more info please ask:)

Did you check under manage to see if it has a drive letter assigned?
Sometimes I have problems on my wife's desktop where when I try to install programs to find out " that the admin has set policies to prevent...", and I am denied permission- This is easily resolved by disabling UAC, installing the program, and then re-enabling UAC.

Or try this to gain control:
  1. In Windows Explorer window, locate the files or folders that you want to take ownership and grant access permissions.
  2. Right click on the file or directory.
  3. Click on “Properties” on the right click menu.
  4. Click on “Security” tab.
  5. Click on “Advanced” button at the bottom.
  6. In Advanced Security Settings dialog window, click on “Owner” tab.
  7. Here you will be able to see current owner (i.e. TrustedInstaller).
  8. To take ownership of the object, click on the Edit button. Give permission to UAC. Then highlight the user name in the “Change owner to” box that you want to assign as the owner for the object. Click “OK” to finish the process.
  9. Back in Advanced Security Settings window, you will see the current owner has changed to the user you just selected.
  10. Click “OK” button to exit this window.
  11. Click “OK” again to exit completely from the Properties window.
  12. Repeat step 1 to 4 to open the object’s Properties window again.
  13. Back in object’s Properties window, click on Edit button, and confirm the UAC elevation request.
  14. Highlight the Administrators in the “Group or user names” box. If the user ID or group that you want to manage the permissions for the object doesn’t exist, click on “Add” button, and type in the user name or group name desired into the “Enter object names to select” box, and finish off by clicking on “OK”.
  15. In the Permissions for Administrators box below (or any other user name or group name you chose), click on “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.
  16. Click “OK” twice when done.

Never realised how much UAC stopped.
Disabled UAC success!
Rebooted
Open My Computer and had access to my files. So if this is a vista thingy
then if I turn UAC back on won't I lose access again?

hit the ie refresh (F5).

The problem with the UAC is the ownership issue. See the steps above to gain ownership.

Hello Jame,

You shouldn't have to turn off UAC to gain access to your hard drive. Something else may be going on. I not sure what but somethings going on.

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and have never had to turn UAC off the read my other drives.

Is a 160GB WD Sata internal.
Was originally the installed main drive (C:\).
In order to keep from losing any data, when I re-installed OS I used a different drive.
I never removed this drive from computer. It was on the Sata1 port and I moved it to Sata5 port thinking it was just a Sata issue, that did not help.
