Arty, sorry, but I think you're screwed.

All I can suggest is a clean install of Vista, which, of course, means reinstalling all of your other programs as well.

It's going to be difficult, I know, but try to backup up any data/files that are important to you.

If you have any problems/questions, let us know.

This is not what I really wanted to hear. I have so many work related files on the laptop. I am an architect and there are thousands of drawing files on it. What do you reckon happened here?

If you really, really want, I will re-read this thread and we will try to go back to the basics, but realistically the only easy way to solve this problem would be a Clean Install, as Ed has said. We do not really have any leads except for networking, and I would suggest backing up everything in Safe Mode, even though it is all dumped into C:\Windows.OLD. Your current situation is dire, and I don't know that fixing would be possible, and certainly it would be beyond difficult.

It could be a dead hard disk, so run some Hard Disk checking tools after you are back online (or now) Seatools for Windows is my favourite. You can back up all your files in Safe Mode (DO THIS!) even though it should be dumped into Windows.OLD. If you format your hard Disk, this will not happen, and often it goes wrong, so put no faith in this. I will need to quitely re-read this thread, as it has moved so fast that none of us have kept up. Booting into Safe mode is a good sign, and from this point we often fix, but your Safe Mode with Networking is not good and things do not look good here. Even if you don't reinstall now, do backup now, as your situation may deteriorate drastically, and we don't want to have to do post-mortem data recovery.

If you have your data files on a separate partition, then reinstalling won't affect them

If they're on the same partition as Vista, then make sure you don't format the drive as part of the install; again, your data files shouldn't be affected.

But you're always safest if you can back them up beforehand, just in case...

Thanks guys for your assistance in this problem. I have given up and got a man in to sort it out. £40.00 to back up data and reinstall vista then reinstall data.

Geez, I would've done it for 30 pounds if you'd covered the airfare... :geek:

Good luck,

Hmm. But would you have got here if you had to fly through volcanic ash?????!!!!!!!!!

Well I would not have had to fly, I already live in England. I don't know if you even live in England, but my family and I drive hundreds (often over one to two thousand) miles every year, all across Europe to wherever we have booked our holiday, just for one holiday. We take it in 5 1/2 hour shifts and every 24 hours take a break. Pricing: £20 + Fuel :)
