Hello William!

You did both logs absolutely perfectly! Well done!

That file is indeed corrupt. It needs fixing.

There are multiple ways of replacing a corrupt file, all with their advantages and disadvantages. The safest way is from a CD. Do you have your Vista Install Disk? If you don't, just tell me, and I shall use a method from within Windows.

In the mean time, please download the file attached, and place it directly on your Desktop. Please actually place it directly on your Desktop, as all scripts will use C:\Users\William\Desktop\dfsrprov.mof, so please don't confuse me!

Thanks!

Richard

P.S. Please confirm that the file is in position.

Richard, Thank You so very much. I do not have a Vista install disk as my computer came pre loaded. I do have the HP Recover Disks that I purchased from them, but we don't want to go there I'm sure.
The file is on my DESKTOP.

Hello William!

So sorry for the delay. Please do the following:

Create a folder on your Desktop called BackedUpFiles. You can use another name or location if you want, as long as I know where it is. Copy C:\Windows\system32\wbem\dfsrprov.mof into it. Always have a backup!

Now create a System Restore point: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html

Take Ownership of file

Use the above tutorial on C:\Windows\system32\wbem\dfsrprov.mof and the folder C:\Windows\system32\wbem\

Use it to add your own User Name. We can revert this all later.

Copy the file from your Desktop into C:\Windows\system32\wbem and overwrite the damaged dfsrprov.mof.The two files in the store are corrupt because they are hard linked to the wbem copy. With any luck, this will automatically resolve.

Next:

OTLI.gif
OTL - Download or alternative link here and here

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
/md5start
dfsrprov.mof
/md5stop
  • Click the None button, followed by Run Scan button. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it here.
2) Re-run SFC. Note! You only need to upload CBS.log if corruptions are found!

To upload your CBS.log: Please navigate to, and copy to your Desktop C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Now right click on the CBS.log on your Desktop > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload that zip file as an attachment here.

Thanks!

Richard

Richard, just a note to let you know that I got the Blue Screen again this morning while I was working on over writeing the file C:\Windows\system32\wbem but not having any luck. I got the Administration rights, or at least it said success when I ran the elvated cmd but when I try to copy the file it tells me I don't have permission. I hate to ask but do you have a step by step that I can follow. I have the file as a .zip on my desktop and went back and downloaded it to my downloads and tried it from both places but no luck. I will try to figure it out.
I made the System Restore point so if I goof I can go back and start over.

< End of report >
This is the OTL Report. I am going to run the SFC scan and will see what that does.
I have a problem in that I have two files named dfsrprov.mof. The old one and the new. I tried to delete the old one but can not so far, only the Truster Installer has full control. I clicked on the properties and Security tag and was goin to change it but I did not want to mess up anything.
I an looking to see if I can find a Vista Install CD if this doesn't work.
Remember I have made a Restore Point and if need be will that take me back to ground zero?
Also is this the cause of my Blue Screen crashes?
Thank You...

This is the CBS file and it's still is there. I talked to a friend and they are going to look to see if the Vista Install CD they have is for a 32 or 64 bit. I need the 32 bit I guess because that is what I have. Again Thank You and I will keep it up to see if I can replace the file in C:Windows\system32\wbem\dfsrproc.mof.

This is a screen shot of the two files named dfsrprov.mof. The one that has the (2)
is the new one that I moved into the folder from my desktop. Can I delete the old one and will the new file take it's place.

Hello!

Did you not get the option to overwrite when you copied in that new file? If you did, can you please re-try it, and allow it to replace the corrupt file?

Thanks!

Richard, I was able to delete the the orginal file and replaced it with the one you sent me, which I named dfsrprov (2). I ran the SFC and it did not correct the error. I am enclosing the CBS file. Would this file be the reason for the Blue Screen's? I sure want to thank you for the time and effort you are putting into this. I read the take ownership tutorials and was able to do that part but could not get it to grant me permission. Said invalid prim. so I followed the instruction on properties and somehow I got the file to delete and left the new one in it's place, ( I Think) anyway it's there. You can let me know and if all else fails I can do a System Recovery. My computer is for home use only and I don't use it for any business transactions, just photos the web etc. Again Thank You.

Hello!

Believe it or not, this is good news, and we are making progress!

The one in wbem is now fixed! However, the hard link is broken, and the store copy is still corrupt. So, one corruption fixed, one to go :)

Please take ownership of C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-dfsr-core-clientonly_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_b86505b69725e0c7\

and the dfsrprov.mof file inside it.

Now use the copy from your Desktop once again, and make sure to overwrite the one in this folder.

After that, SFC should come back clean :) Please can you run SFC after replacing the file to confirm?

Also, have you had any BSoD duing my part of the operation? If you have, can you please run this tool again: http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

to provide Richc46 with any additional details.

Thanks!

Richard

Hello William!

What exactly does the folder C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-dfsr-core-clientonly_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_b86505b69725e0c7\ look like?

Allow me to just extract a phrase from your CBS.log:

file is missing
It is now missing, rather than corrupt! Can you please confirm that that folder has a good copy of the file, with the correct name?

Thanks!

Richard

P.S. Thank you very much for your +rep. Greatly appreciated.
