I believe there were a dozen or so other drivers to be updated and to unistall the AntiVirus and replace it with MSE among other suggestions.

TY for the kind words and rep.
As far as the drivers. They should always be kept up to date.
Use the computer to see how it goes. Set updater to update drivers, too.

This is for Vista, too
Windows Update Settings - Change - Windows 7 Forums

Set it to accept everything
Set it to inform and not install. You install a few at a time when there are many.

Comlete all the steps that you can and then give me BSOD report. It will save both of us time and help us to diagnose quicker.

You are very welcome
For your own knowledge, those reports just give tiny clues as to the cause. I have given you suggestions based upon the clues. Once you performed all of the necessary steps and you still get BSODs, then time to look for other clues.

ok so turned pc on this morning, no blue screen during loading , but..about 30 seconds after vista started i got a blue screen, this time bccode 23...the pc restarted and self ran a dskchk on my usb stick i'd been using for a "ready boost drive".
it then started into windows fine..i have since disabled the usb stick as
ready boost drive, is it possible that this could have been the issue the whole time? i had been using that stick as a ready boost drive constantly for about a year or more

have attached the dmp file for the BSOD

STOP 0x00000023: FAT_FILE_SYSTEM Usual causes: Disk corruption, insufficient physical memory, Device driver, Indexing, Resident antivirus, backup, defrag programs, Disk/Drive failing/failure

Per this report all of the above could be the cause.
When there are so many drivers given as a cause, it can be memory. An unlikely driver was given as the cause in this report.
Update the drivers that I mentioned to you and perform a memory test. There is nothing else that I can do until you follow the suggestions given.
Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Run for 8 passes
If passes try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
If fails do the same for 8 passes.

If you did not already remove the anti virus. I would feel that was the cause.
I think that you had AVG, if so use this uninstall tool
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
If you did not have AVG, go to google put the name of the Anti Virus Company eg AVG and uninstall tool and use the appropriate tool to remove totally.

Yes, the USB could be the cause, but time will tell.

I'm waiting with my breath held!

Just found this forum/thread after a BSOD. Really quickly, but I don't want to compromise the thread: I built the machine 2 months ago and it has been running flawlessly. Then BSOD and now file corruption. Dang. After a disk scan (not easy in Win7) which seemed to finish overnight without leaving a message, I started replacing corrupted programs. (It *seems* to be all relatively newly installed applications.) Then, after a day, Win 7 hangs at the login screen.

Changes lately include
* Allowed Win 7 SP1 what seems about a week ago.
* AVG updated itself even though I told it to ask first (I guess this becuase it suddenly decided the game BioShock had a virus, which I doubt. Why now? But I often see that AVG has new virus defs without me downloading them.)
* And a couple of weeks ago I started to get AMD Raid errors. The tool says nothing much, and they seem to happen when the computer goes to sleep, so I assumed it may just be a false positive.

Anyway, I'm interested to see if AVG is the culprit in your case.
