windows update just seems to hang while checking.

Just a warning to users following this thread that the WSUS Offline Update tool v10.9.2 was the last version to support Vista SP2. ...

Good news. I just noticed that a special extended support release (ESR) v9.2.2 of the WSUS Offline Update tool was released today (03-Jul-2017) for older platforms like Win XP and Vista. According to the change log at http://download.wsusoffline.net/ this ESR v9.2.2 of the tool should also install the new June 2017 updates listed the Microsoft Security Advisory 4025685: Guidance for older platforms: June 13, 2017 for protection against the NSA-leaked exploits EnglishmanDentist, EsteemAudit, and ExplodingCan.

I'll revise Note 6 of my instructions in m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours to alert users about this new ESR v9.2.2 of the tool later today.

I just did a clean install this weekend and was looking for a way to update. Thank you for this post and the link to your guide.

I read in Webuser that there was a June emergency patch for Vista....

Hi Autobahn:

There were five new updates released for Vista SP2 in June 2017 that were not delivered via Windows Update and must be installed manually. The links in post #588 should redirect you to the correct download pages on the Microsoft Update Catalog, but if that doesn't work then many of the download links the original the Microsoft Security Advisory 4025685: Guidance for Older Platforms: June 13, 2017 will redirect you to .msu installers posted on the Microsoft Download Center.

Thanks for your help as always.

So I should be as up to date as I can be now.

The last installs I did were the very last Windows updates before they stopped, apart from these emergency June 2017 ones.

Hi Autobahn:

If Windows Update was able to able to install your April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates (i.e., the last batch of security updates released before the end of extended support for Vista SP2) and you manually installed the five out-of-band updates released for Vista SP2 in June 2017 (see the MS Answers thread More Shadow Brokers Exploits Patched June 2017 for Win XP and Vista) then you should have all available Vista SP2 updates.

The simplest way to check is to run Windows Update and see if it finds any available updates, but your post # 592 from 25-Jun-2017 indicates you're having problems with Windows Update and aren't really sure if you received your April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates. You didn't respond to my questions in post # 593 so here's a screenshot of the April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates installed my own 32-bit Vista SP2 computer from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates that should help you figure out if you received your April 2017 updates.

Hi BorisKV:

Can you confirm that Windows Update delivered your April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates on or around 11-Apr-2017 when extended support for this operating system ended (see the image of my Windows Update history for April 2017 in in post # 606)? When you open your IE9 browser and go to Help | About Internet Explorer, what is the Update Version? If Windows Update delivered your April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates it should be v9.0.60 (KB4014661) or higher.

IE9 Version KB4014661 April 2017.png

Do you have the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 installed in addition to MS Office 2007? Even if you were fully patched as of 11-Apr-2017, there are new Office-related speed-up patches for MS Office 2010, MS Office 2007 and/or the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 that must be pre-installed every Patch Tuesdays (the second Tuesday of the month) to get Windows Update working again if these products are installed on your system. See Volume Z's current list of required speed up patches for the July 2017 Patch Tuesday updates on page 1 of peggybeggs' thread why has vista stopped automatic updates?.

Please note that the MS Answers forum just underwent a major software update last week (see Cristal Reg's announcement New Site Design for Microsoft Community) and many of the links I posted earlier in this thread are now broken and will throw a "We are sorry...The page you requested is not available at this time" error.

The step-by-step instructions for fixing the "Checking for updates..." hang and speeding up Windows Update can now be found on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-update/updates-not-working-it-has-been-searching-for/92cd6922-17f6-4730-b46b-91a480b95dd3. These instructions should patch Vista SP2 and IE9 up to the end of extended support on 11-Apr-2017.

If you have MS Office 2010, MS Office 2007 and/or the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 installed then see Volume Z's post on page 1 of peggybeggs' thread why has vista stopped automatic updates? at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-update/why-has-vista-stopped-automatic-updates/42c98c78-157b-44b7-858a-3ba92933cb90 for a list of additional Office updates that must be pre-installed to speed up Windows Update. Note that 08-Aug-2017 is the August 2017 Patch Tuesday so Volume Z will likely be revising that post tomorrow with download links for any new Office speed up patches released with this month's Patch Tuesday updates.

Once Windows Update has run successfully and patched Vista SP2 and IE9 with the last batch of April 2017 security updates (i.e., to the end of extended support) see if you need to manually install any of the five special out-of-band security updates released in June 2017. Hi everybody,

I just updated office 2007 again using the information by Volume Z here:

why has vista stopped automatic updates? - Microsoft Community

Now I encountered a problem. I posted my request for help on that forum also, but maybe you guys have a solution:

I have Vista home premium and office 2007 (dutch) installed.

Today I installed the 2 given 'new' updates:

KB4011064 (Compatibility Pack SP3) new
KB4011062 (Excel 2007) new

After that I ran windows update and it foud 7 additional office 2007 updates which I installed. When I check the installed updates under 'installed programs' it has installed 44 updates in total today. So far so good.

However, when I open Outlook now it has somehow altered the language for the user interface. Not completely but half.... The task bar is shown in dutch but all options are now in I guess swedish or norwegian. I tried to alter the language in Outlook or in the Office language application, but nothing helps... As far as I can see Word and Excel are fully displayed in dutch as should be. I do not have any language interface packages installed. My guess is one of the updates is corrupt an alters the interface language partially..... 44 is quite a bunch to check manually, any suggestions which one it could be?

Thanks for having a peak an please check my updates/edits below.

Greetz, Master

EDIT 1:
I did a system restore to yesterday and the language setting is back to normal. So my conclusion is that one of the updates is truly corrupt.
However I don't know which so it doesn't resolve the problem...

EDIT 2:
After the system restore I ran windows update the normal way. It took about 3,5 hours to complete. I installed the 9 found updates resulting in the same 44 updates which are now shown again in 'installed programs/updates'. Outlook experiences the same problem now. Menu's (
especially options/preferences) are half dutch and half swedish or norwegian....

Hi Burn Master:

Please see Kis Imre'spost today in the MS TechNet forum Latest Outlook 2007 Security patch kb4011086 is wrong. Patch is change app language to Swedish!. Many users in that thread are reporting the same issue and uninstalling KB4011086 (Security Update for Outlook 2007: September 12, 2017) from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates should also solve the problem for users affected by this bug who have already installed the Office 2007 security updates for September 2017.

Be sure your automatic updates are disabled [Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended) and re-boot] until you've confirmed that Microsoft has released a bug fix.

Thank you Imacri for pointing me in the right direction!

A couple of weird things which I noticed still:

There were two kb4011086 listed as installed in the add/remove programs list. So I ran uninstall of the top one first, no result. After that I ran the uninstall of the second one and noticed it asked me to shut down some GUI first. During the removal of the first one that wasn't asked, so apparently it were two different updates with the same kb no.?

After I uninstalled both I was prompted to restart the pc and after that the issue had gone. My Outlook (menu) is now shown in the dutch language as it should be.

However if I check the add/remove programs list it shows 44 installed updates still.... the kb4011086 have both gone, but the amount of installed updates today haven't dropped. Apparently it has been replaced by another or...? Maybe it has something to to with kb4011086 being a replacement for kb3213643 which was installed today also. Weird stuff all together....

I'll wait for a patch as you said.

Thanks again and greetz,

Master

Hi Everyone:

Got a bit of a surprise today. I was under the impression that extended support for MS Office 2007 and the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 ended on 10-Oct-2017 (see the MS support article Office 2007 Has Reached End of Extended Support) but the November 2017 Updates for Microsoft Office show that several security updates were released for those products today with the November 2017 Patch Tuesday updates.

I assumed I wouldn't need to install any speed up patches for my MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 this month but realized something was amiss after my manual Windows Update got stuck on "Checking for updates..." for over 2 hours. I aborted and re-booted, pre-installed the two new security patches KB4011205 and KB4011265 released this month for the Compatibility Pack (see VolumeZ's download links for all MS Office speed up patches in peggybeggs' thread why has vista stopped automatic updates?), and Windows Update ran to completion in about 2 minutes.

Have I gotten my dates confused, or is there another reason why security updates were released this November 2017 Patch Tuesday for MS Office 2007 and the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3?

If there are any Vista SP2 users following this thread who use the built-in Windows Defender anti-spyware scanner, please note that there was a patch released yesterday for a critical security vulnerability in all Microsoft security products, including MSE and Windows Defender - see the 06-Dec-2017 security advisory CVE-2017-11937 | Microsoft Malware Protection Engine Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.

Vista SP2 is not mentioned in that security advisory but when I started Windows Defender today and clicked Check for Updates it installed the new v1.1.14405.2 scan engine that patches this vulnerability (go to Help | About Windows Defender to see your version). I tried running a manual Windows Update first, but for some reason Windows Update reported there were no available updates for my system.

Windows Defender Engine 1_1_14405_2 07 Dec 2017.png

Kudos to Woody Leonhard for alerting his readers to this vulnerability in his AskWoody.com article Microsoft’s Malware Protection Engine Vulnerable.

When I was notified the end of support for Microsoft Security Essentials I uninstalled MSE and looked around for another anti-virus freeware and chose Panda, which I've been running ever since. However I think uninstalling Windows Security Essentials must have enabled Windows Defender as after checking, that too is running.

Apparently both have been running and I wasn't aware of Defender running in the background.

Should I just leave it alone? Once in a while there's a pop message from Panda that it has quarantine something. I haven't ever received any pop up messages from Defender, however after checking the option settings I found a couple of the notification setting weren't enabled.

Software that hasn't been classified for risks
Changes made by software that's permitted

Or should I uninstall one of them? How good is Defender compared to other freeware anti-virus apps?

Perhaps running both may be slowing down the pc & os ? There haven't been any conflicts. I don't see any processes that relate to Windows Defender. There is a WinDefend service running.

WD on Vista is just anti-spam and anti-spyware and shouldn't cause any conflicts with anti-virus software.

Error - Windows Update Cannot Currently Check for Updates

Wondering if anyone using Vista expirenced the following error this week:

maxresdefault.jpg

Aparently there was a AuthCab time stamp error causing WU to stop working on Windows 7 and Vista, too.

The Easiest fix that worked for me was this:

From Windows Update....

 • In Change Settings select "Never Check for Updates".
 • Click OK.
 • Manually "Check for Updates".
 • If update fails here, reboot and check again.
 • Go back to Change Settings and select your method for WU checking/installation.
 • Verify other setting are all as required, including Microsoft Update.
 • Click OK.
 • Manually "Check for Updates" again.

The fix I used with success was found on page 13:

Error Code 80248015 - Microsoft Community

Mods...sorry if this info goes somewhere else...thought it might help someone avoid trashing their WU software distribution folder like I did several days ago!

...I tried running a manual Windows Update first, but for some reason Windows Update reported there were no available updates for my system.

Hi Vista1972:

I didn't experience this Windows Update error 80248015 but I know of one other Vista SP2 user that did. See Phil 1953's thread Windows Vista Update in the MS Answers forum - I'm posting there as user Great White North.

I read Woody Leonhard's ComputerWorld article Windows Update for Win7 broken, throwing error 80248015 and saw KarenS's comment "When I clicked on the Windows Update icon today to start the updates it said that my computer was up to date and that there were no updates available which I know was not the truth because I hadn’t installed any of the [recent ones]". I'm beginning to wonder now if this expiry date of December 3, 2017 in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabs\authcab.cab file (which Microsoft fixed for Win 7 users) is the same reason that my Windows Update told me yesterday that there were no available updates for Windows Defender on my Vista SP2 machine when I knew the virus definitions were more than a week out of date.

Windows Update is still telling me that no updates are available this morning but it's possible that a new definition set hasn't been released for the anti-spyware version of Windows Defender for Vista SP2 since my definitions were updated to v1.259.37.0 yesterday . Checking from inside Windows Defender at Help | Check for updates didn't find any new definitions either, so I'll post back after I've done some more testing.
