Whats the Best Antivirus/ Security Suite??

Hi all.

Just to add my experience. I used to have Mcafee installed on all 3 my PC's but about 2 years ago I got the dreaded VUndo virus. Mcafee didn't even detect it. I uninstalled it and loaded Avast and Malwarebytes (both free), they not only cleaned my PC but the PC ran a lot faster.

I have used these two apps for 2 years now and have had a few warnings but no infections.

I did install Kaspersky (Came free with my ASUS MB) but I had a lot of Vista stability problems and so have returned to AVAST. Having said that the free Kaspersky online scanner is a very good backup to check your system occasionally.

yes AVG was the best anti-virus/security in 2000 i think
but nowdays turns out on an internet poll 56% of freeware security and anti-virus are better than $300 shop software.

Thanks for the input peoples.. I actually looked and found that BitDefender ranked in top 3 in a few reviews, and 1st in 2 reviews so I got BitDefender AV 2008. and to be honest I didn't like it, seems cheaply made, is really simple, but not in a good way, more plain than simple. so I wouldn't say it's that easy to use, I just overall am not liking it, it's not for me. I'm going to just go with NOD32, I'm going to try the trial and probably buy it after the 3 months is up. I had kaspersky AV for a little while and i actually really liked it. BUT, it had some compatibility issues with Vista and was causing internet connection to fail, always.. someone in this forum site mentioned that kaspersky could be my problem, (thats when I didn't kno) and after I uninstalled booya, I had internet. so ya I would like to use Kasper, but I'm going to give nod32 a try, everyone seems to give it great great reviews.. so thank you all for your help, and whats a good firewall. should I buy one or get the free ones, or is that a bad idea just like it's a bad idea to use avast or a free AV. I need a firewall and don't kno much about that area... thanks again everyone..

I don't use any sort of actively scanning AV. I use Malwarebytes Antimalware to scan my computer for viruses if I suspect anything but as of today I haven't had a virus in a couple of years. I also use SpyBot S&D and SpywareBlaster's browser immunization functions. I have a hardware firewall in my router. I also use OpenDNS to protect against Phishing sites and such.

But for those who need an active scanning AV here's my list of good ones I've come across.

1. NOD32 - Overall this probably the best AV on the market. Small footprint, superb protection and very easy to use.
2. Kaspersky - Another great one probably just as good as NOD32, my only quarrel with KAV is that it seems to be constantly downloading updates. Which is good to get the latest definitions every few minutes but personally I'd be perfectly happy with once a day updates instead of it using bandwidth constantly.
3. Norton 2009 - Now I know everyone's going to say that Norton sucks and I'm inclined to agree with you. I've hated Norton for closer to a decade for being the slowest piece of bloatware AV on the market but NAV 2009 to me seems to be a huge exception. Norton 09 is FAST and leaves a tiny memory footprint and is great protection to boot which is pretty much the complete opposite of any other Norton product EVER.
4. Live OneCare - This one is also very good. Good Protection, enhances Windows Firewall and many utilities that helps Windows run better like system backups, junk file cleaners, etc. Also I like this one because it integrates itself with Vista very well. Almost becomes part of the OS itself. I thought that was kind of cool.

For free AV's I'd recommend Avast or AntiVir. AVG just doesn't seem to be as good as it once was and to me it just seems like a big piece of advertising with minimal AV protection.

The one's you should stay away from IMO would McAfee and SpySweeper AV. McAfee because its just biggest piece of junk. That company really needs to rethink the entire program. SS because it leaves a huge memory footprint and it just constantly pops up with completely unnecessary notifications.

I like Kaspersky IS 2009 which is the best I've tried in years. Slows my XP laptop down when it updates. No issues with it on my Vista computers.

MS Live One Care v2 & Norton IS 2009 are both solid performing antivirus suites. Used them all the time when I worked as a PC tech at Circuit City.

Webroot Spysweeper as also a good tool for removing malware.

Help!!!!!! Norton issues

Hi folks,

I have just instaled Norton 2008 in my laptop.

Got Vista (32Bit)

Having problems removing w32.spybot.worm. No option for removal. only REVIEW shows. Found many option online but since I am not that techie, I wasnt able to remove the virus.

Another issue I have wit Norton is that when I open my laptop, everything shows OK then suddenly, a pop-up will show that my firewall is turned off. I check the control panel and it shows ON.

I tried to turn it ON and OFF assuming that my laptop might be just acting weird but still, I am getting the same problem.

Please HELP!

Hi melvicgcano, Norton 2009 is a far better choice from ground up. You are using Norton firewall there for it turns off window firewall.

Sometime it is ok if you can't remove certain virus as long as you have it isolated.

However, about the massage you are getting, if it keep poping up tell you that you have to install this and that and click this and that, then, you have a very bad axx virus.

Another thing, if your window update has failed, it is more likely you either you still have the virus or the virus has massed up something. Then you are looking at likely a Vista reinstallation.

Hope this helps.

Bruce

Thanks Bruce,

Since I cannot remove the virus using the Norton 2008, what I did was I tried to look for the file infected and manually delete it and delte it as well from the recycle Bin.

Thanks for the advice

One of the best ways to simply avoid spyware is logging on to our system as a non admin user. Then spyware attacks don't have the permission needed to infect.

Hi

I recommend that you disable Norton and run The Kaspersky free on line scan

Free Virus Scan - Kaspersky Lab

When it finishes, let it remove all infections.

Although some people in this thread have had success with Norton, I find Avast and Malwarebytes (both free) to be much better at protection and less of a performance overhead.
