REMEMBER THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS SO WE SHOULD TRUST AND BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY!!!
If they told you spysheriff was the number one package would you belive them...!!

But I am curious on how they get the results, do they mention if they test the apps under stringent condition or are they simply taken on sales figures.
I note I stole your post. My apologies, but us penguins got to stick together

Feel free, its in the public domain to share... :D

I can not imagine how Norton got anywhere near the top.

However ESET (NOD32) is the clear winner between those 2 hands down.
But you can go to 10 sites and get 10 different "opinions" about what are the top 10 anti virus available.

I think the site listed above the "Av-comparatives" is about as close as you will get to non bias.

Testing AV or any other type of security suite is based on how YOU do it. Every test coud show different results because ever type of tester uses different viruses.
It all depends on how you use your computer, and what you do with your internet.

ALL true.

Myself I use FireFox as my browser which is WAY less apt to be attacked or pick up a virus. Once you tweak it a little it is also FAR faster of a browser than Explorer.
Vista 64 bit I believe is less apt to be infected than any windows 32 bit OS. The first known threat to a 64Bit system was just 3 1/2 years ago and they remain far fewer in number.
I also have a nice router with a good hard firewall.
THEN is when NOD32 & SpyBot take over to pick up what might scurry through.

Yep I agree 100% on that. Everyone has different meothods. What I was asking was do you know what methods were used for the test for the results you posted. Testing of AV's is usualy done under certain stringent conditions. For instance the methods used to conduct the test over at av comparatives are available here - http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse/methodology.pdf

It would be good to see how different people conduct the test and under what conditions.

Why going for the free ones?
Use NAV 09 or NIS 09 of Mcafee 10 and then.
These latest Anti virus softwares consumes less resources than the free ones and works best.I recommend NIS 09...works best.

Well, it looks like none of the free firewalls are good. Comodo Firewall worked fine with NOD32 on my Vista Home Premium for a time. Then, Comodo started downloading updates, and it slowed down my computer. I uninstalled Comodo and tried PCTools firewall. PCTools uses very little memory (about 5 MB) but it would not let me install any new programs. I had to turn off the firewall to install anything. Now, I have many programs downloaded from www.giveawayoftheday.com that are given away without updates; if allowed to connect to the internet, these programs convert themselves into trial versions. So I had to do any new installations offline. Sphinx Vista Firewall Control has a very small RAM footprint, but for some reason, it wouldn't let me shut down my laptop, especially right after running Windows Updates :(. Finally, I purchased Outpost Security Suite and uninstalled NOD32. You get a lifetime license for Outpost Security Suite and Outpost Firewall Pro for the price of a 1-year license. If you're looking for a security suite, I suggest you check this out. The offer is on till Jan 31, 2009.

Unless they made huge changes to the core parts of zone alarm, I strongly recommend not using it. Each and every time I've installed it I've gotten all sorts of software conflicts.
