... Supermium v. 122.0.6261.85 64bit
Of possible interest to @wither 3 and anyone else using Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1: MSFN moderator Dave-H reported a conflict between this product and Supermium 122 in an April 12 post on this page. He had to switch off protection of Chrome to get this browser version working properly. The issue either did not exist or was much less severe with Supermium 121 on XP x86. This browser is still being developed, so if you are going to tell everyone who posts here that you are using Supermium, then you should include your version number!

...HitmanPro has found 3 malware in the core of Thorium. After their move to the quarantine, the internet connection was "fell" ... even a restart did not help. So I gave the system recovery, he recovered, and Thorium "flew" from the PC!
Thank you for that report. Perhaps the MSFN member with multiple accounts had good reasons to be suspicious of that developer? Your extremely old MSE client did not detect anything? It might be a good idea to upload that installer to VirusTotal for further analysis.

Greetings. I also tried Malwarebytes on Vista, but since last year, during the system scan, it started automatically upgrading to a higher version without the option to stop and ended up with an error. So before checking MSE I use RKill 2.9.1.0_Portable, HitmanPro_x64, Adwcleaner_7.4.2 and Trellix GetSusp 5.0.0.27. Before installing the third-party SW, I turn off MSE, because it gives false alarms.
After installing such SW, I will check the system with the above mentioned applications and finally MSE.
Otherwise, I have extended protection enabled in Supermium 122 64bit (the same applies to Windows XP SP3 IE, where it is more difficult to start, but then it runs OK).
MSE version 4.4. although it is old from 2013, but newer 4.9 are updated to 4.10 with subsequent termination of MSE with a notice of termination of extended support. Only MSE 4.4 runs normally. Microsoft releases daily security definitions for Defender and MSE, in addition to Windows 10-11, also for Windows 6.0 to 6.3. I always manually download and install them approximately every 5 days. So today I have MSE on Vista with current Engine 1.1.24030.4 with AV and Antispyware definitions 1.409.602.0. After a quick check, the entire OS is clean, which makes me especially happy for an eighteen-year-old system...

It doesn’t look like anyone at MSFN has tried Thorium on Vista yet. I regret to say that MSFN’s most active Vista x64 user is still committed to win32’s extended kernel.
I've had REALLY good luck with Supermium. Good that there is a Thorium choice now. Before, Windows 7 and earlier users were stuck with an older build of Blink. Maybe I'll try it (even on Windows 8)

@Jody Thornton I would edit the passage you just quoted if current forum software permitted, but we have “turned the page” on it now. Those who are actually using Supermium on Vista seem pretty happy with it (but those who have tried it on XP, not so much).

@19jmsr56 A little too much discussion of security software for a browser thread! Someone should really start a new thread in the System Security forum section before long. I think Norton intends to dump @wither 3 on May 22, so maybe he would be interested in different ideas.

Recent discussion at MSFN makes it clear that Supermium requires a processor with two or more cores and should not be tried on a single-core system. On the other hand, appropriate versions of Thorium are slow but usable on the single-core systems that some XP enthusiasts are still running.

I tried installing 122. It extracts and then brings up a screen in Chinese. If I close that box, it says it can't "open the output box." If I click on a empty box on that screen and then a box in the lower right hand corner which says something in Chinese with a 26 and checkmark, I get the same thing as before.

@wither 3: Hello. If you have Supermium 119 installed, it needs to be uninstalled by deleting it - it doesn't show up as a normal program!
It is in 2 files: C:\ProgramFile\Supermium, then C:\User\AppData\Local\Supermium.
Then restart, clean the registers with a suitable program, restart again.
Then an attempt to install supermium_122_64_setup, or 32_setup. I don't see any "Chinese", a classic firefox-type pop-up dialog, then a window for entering a link to the desktop will appear, confirm, Supermium will be installed. The first start takes longer, but then it opens normally (like chrome)...

I have Supermium v119......................... 64 bit. Can't find a setting in Supermium for updating...

Hi wither 3:

I don't use the Supermium browser but you might be interested in reading the feature request on the Gitub Supermium project page at Auto updates support #273. That issue was closed on 18-Mar-2024, but I did not read all the release notes at Releases · win32ss/supermium to see if auto-updating for Win 8.1 and older OSs has actually been added to a recent version of Supermium.

I tried installing 122. It extracts and then brings up a screen in Chinese...

If the 64-bit .exe installer at Supermium Web Browser didn't run correctly did you try using the link under the "Release" section on the main GitHub project page at GitHub - win32ss/supermium: Chromium fork for Windows XP/2003 and up to download the latest available installer? If you click that link it should currently re-direct to the Supermium v122.0.6261.152 (R4) download page where you can scroll down to "Assets" to find the 32-bit and 64-bit .exe installers for v122.0.6261.152 (R4).

Hi Imacri- I used the R4 download at the link provided by 19jmsr56. I haven't tried the uninstall/reinstall procedure he provided. Funny, the Chinese box that comes up after extraction came up again this morning and I'm not trying to do an install.

Hi wither 3:

Do you still have the 360 Chrome browser (or 360 Secure Browser or whatever it's called these days) that was developed by the Chinese company Qihoo installed on your Vista machine? If so I'd suggest you remove it ASAP.

Yes, it's still installed and I had been thinking of uninstalling it. I did disable it in all parts of msconfig. I was waiting to see if I really wanted to keep supermium. Think I'll uninstall it right now.

Well, there's two programs related to 360 in Programs and Features. When I try uninstall either, I get dialogue boxes with Chinese writing. Looks like I have to do a registry edit to remove them and then remove the related files from the disk.

I understand that but it shouldn't make any difference. Also, the link you provided is for win32.

I have managed to delete 360Chrome by editing the registry. However, there is a companion program 360Safe which I can't uninstall because I don't have permission. When I click on the properties of the uninstall file, every option has full control, etc. My girl is in the hospital so I haven't been diligently following up on the problems.

Hi wither 3:

win32ss is the username that Supermium developer Shane Fournier uses on the GitHub repository - see their biography at win32ss - Overview. I believe Shane posts in the MSFN Vista board as user win32.

It's likely too late now if you've already started editing your 360 Chrome registry entries, but you still might be interested in reading the answer that smallpotato000 posted in Wonderful_Artichoke8's May 2022 topic How do i uninstall this? i was looking for a browser that still supports vista, now i cant uninstall this. please help? anyone who could understand chinese or is chinese? in the reddit r/WindowsVista community.

Supermium 122 has just been updated for security (imagine that!). This link definitely leads to GitHub, where the actual developer definitely posts:

Release Supermium 122.0.6261.152 (R5) - SECURITY PATCH · win32ss/supermium

I wouldn’t know how to remove Chinesium 360, but a guru like wither 3 should be able to figure it out. It might have been easier if he had used a version from MSFN with all the Chinese language and telemetry removed, but as I recall he courageously downloaded the browser directly from China after someone posted a link, and even disregarded detections by Malwarebytes.

Imacri- Thanks for the clarification. Wish I had seen that reference earlier. Found a few places that describe how to uninstall 360Safe. Haven't pursued them yet.
