So much cruft on my 32-bit desktop (there are 274 programs installed according to Ccleaner's uninstall listing). Startups are hit and miss, mostly miss (monitor not recognized). Time for a clean rebuild, in which case more RAM than 3GB would be a great boon.

I assume your machine is 64-bit ready. 274 programs..??!! Sounds to me like you could do with a run through using MalwareBytes Free: https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

Thanks, downloading now. But the more important help was your questioning. Why I just assumed cruft was the problem and a rebuild is the solution, I don't know. Your questioning made me do some searches, and there are other, more likely culprits (like graphics card seating or problems, or the monitor needs to be rediscovered by unplugging/plugging, etc.). So especial thanks for taking the time to respond with your doubts.

I also searched for 64-bit ready, and will have to check that too (I'm doing an image restore now that has 1 day, 22 hours to go--I had to restore because of another dumb assumption, that maybe a factory restore would ask me if I want to install 32-bit or 64-bit. Dumb dumb dumb.

Thanks so much, you probably saved me days of dead-end "solutions" (and their subsequent undo) that I had intended to implement.

No, it's not needed, but thank you. Very kind of you to help me like this, to say nothing of all the others you've helped (from post counts, it looks like it might be 1,000!).

If I decide to do a 32-bit rebuild, I'd probably use the original 32-bit recovery partition, which I'm presuming would offer a slight head start on drivers (but take more time on Windows updates).

My path forward to fix my sometimes-black-screen startup is to
1) continue to try internet suggestions to fix the monitor startup problem (I'd hate to rebuild from scratch and still have the problem).
2) if no solution, do a rebuild, most probably using the 64-bit copy that you gave me, due to the option to install more RAM.
