Hello everyone,
I had to replace the HDD of my old PC where Vista Home Premium (32bit Italy) was installed.
Not having to restore disks, I retrieved a CD and reinstalled it, however as we all know the Updates are disabled. Is it possible to reinstall all the updates and where can I find them?

I think this ISO has your version on it although it implies it's 64 bit-

3.56 GB file on MEGA

Best I can say is download it and burn to disc. Then run the disc from boot.

If wither 3 can't provide a 32-bit .iso file for re-installing an Italian language version of Vista that is already slipstreamed with Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 plus all ~220 updates released before the end of Vista support (11-Apr-2017) then you might still be able to use the Dism++ utility to patch your Vista OS. SIW2's 02-Dec-2021 instructions <here> show how to patch a 64-bit Vista SP2 OS using Dism++ but the steps are essentially identical for 32-bit Vista.

If wither 3 can't provide the correct .iso file then see my 26-Sep-2022 post in VUser's Windows6.0-kb936330-x64.exe crashes mid install (0x8007000D error) for downloads links to Vista Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 and instructions on how to use the slui.exe 4 method to re-activate your Vista license. If you have not installed Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330, released March 2008) and/or Service Pack 2 (KB948465, released May 2009) apply those standalone .exe installers first before trying to patch with Dism++.

If you have a 32-bit Italian version of Vista then be sure to download the "All Languages" .exe installers for Service Pack 1 and/or Service Pack 2.

As I understood it (I didn't open the disc at boot again), that ISO was supposed to have all versions except Enterprise. If that's not correct, I'll need to talk with SIW2.

You have a 64-bit Vista SP2 machine and your link in post # 2 is for one of SIW2's 64-bit iso files. I assume that the OP James81 needs the 32-bit iso file.

I used to have download links to both of SIW2's .iso files created in August 2020 (Vx862020.iso and Vx642020.iso) that were hosted on their MEGA.nz repository but neither of the links I have has worked since SIW2 removed those .iso files from their repository in 2021. If you plan on contacting SIW2 and asking for their 32-bit .iso I'd just check with them first and make sure it's suitable for "All Languages" / Italian.

Are you referring to the links that SIW2 provided on 30-Nov-2021 for Torsten Wittrock's 32-bit and 64-bit Vista .iso files on the German CHIP.de in post # 3184 of Vista ISO Download?

I believe SIW2 posted those links to CHIP.de for users after he removed his own slipstreamed .iso files from his MEGA.nz repository. Just note that Torsten's .iso files were last updated on 15-Mar-2017 so I have no idea if they include the final April 2017 Patch Tuesday Updates. Assuming Torsten's .iso files can still be downloaded from CHIP.de and install correctly (which doesn't sound likely - SIW2 added in post # 3185 of Vista ISO Dowload that "I have just tested the Chip update packs. I abandoned that as it appears to get stuck on searching for update ids.") then the 32-bit version might still be useful for James81 - if required, any missing patches from April / May / June 2017 (including the out-of-band emergency updates discussed in the MS Answers thread More Shadow Brokers Exploits Patched June 2017 for Win XP and Vista) are still available as .msu standalone installers in the Microsoft Update Catalog.

The Chip updates are the ones I was talking about in my last post. As said in the Vista ISO Download section and in my last post, SIW2 abandoned the use of them because of issues during installation. One can still download those if desired. Like I said, I asked him about the availability of a good ISO and mentioned the language issue to him.

Hi all, I have read the various guides and links you have recommended.
I proceeded to activate my copy of Windows via phone and make some updates.
I then tried to install an old game (I mainly use the PC to play my old games) but I encountered problems I presume due to the various updates that are still missing or that I performed incorrectly.

At this point, I was thinking that maybe it would be easier to look for a version (Iso) of Vista that is as complete as possible and has down all the updates present, even if in English it is not a problem, and reinstall everything from scratch.

What do you think?

Could you be more specific? What updates did you install and how did you install them?

For example, did you install Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 and then try to patch to end of support (11-Apr-2017) using the Dism++ utility as suggested in my 26-Sep-2022 post in VUser's Windows6.0-kb936330-x64.exe crashes mid install (0x8007000D error)?

Do you know if any of your games require the Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5 or higher?

I don't have a copy of SIW1's 32-bit Vista ISO that is already slipstreamed with Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 plus all ~220 updates released before the end of Vista SP2 support, but if you are willing to install a non-Italian 32-bit Vista OS then wither 3 will have to tell you if they have a copy of SIW2's 32-bit Vista ISO or if they only saved a copy of the 64-bit Vista ISO.

Forgive me I was actually inaccurate.
I had no problem installing SP1 and SP2 and the Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5.

The problem with the game occurs during the installation and concerns not accessing the firewall rule setting and I think it is probably due to the fact that I do not have all the updates installed.

At the moment I have not yet installed other updates as I am still reading the guides and posts and I think perhaps, it is more likely to find the Updates and files for the English version than the Italian version.

And maybe at this point, since I am still in the beginning it is better to redo everything with an English version.

What antivirus and default browser are you currently using on this computer? Please include the full product name and version numbers.

Have you updated your hardware drivers since your Vista SP2 reinstall? For example, what is the make and model number of your graphics card (or graphics GPU on your motherboard if you do not have a discrete graphics card like NVIDIA, AMD Radeon, etc.) and the version number of your graphics driver?

It might be helpful if you published a Speccy diagnostic so we can see some basic information about your system configuration. To use Speccy:

1. Download the portable version of Piriform's free Speccy v1.32 utility (spsetup132.zip) available <here>, save the file to any location, and unzip.**
2. Double-click the appropriate .exe file to launch the program (Speccy.exe for your 32-bit OS; Speccy64.exe for a 64-bit OS) and allow it to populate the interface with information about your system software and hardware.
3. Go to File | Publish Snapshot and copy and paste the URL this generates (e.g., http: // speccy.piriform.com/results/xxx... as shown in the image below) in your next reply.

** You can run Speccy Portable from any location, including a removable USB thumb drive. If you can't download and unzip the spsetup132.zip file on your problem Vista SP2 computer then plug a USB thumb drive into another working computer, save and unzip the spsetup132.zip file on that USB thumb drive, and then remove that USB thumb drive and plug it into your problem Vista SP2 machine.



If you haven't used Speccy before, I published a snapshot of my (now retired) HP Pavilion dv6835ca / 32-bit Vista SP2 machine at http://speccy.piriform.com/results/z2qoNAESuxQeYKCK2QGx3or. This 12-Jul-2019 snapshot is the last snapshot I published for this Vista SP2 laptop before I uninstalled my Norton Security Deluxe v22.15.2.22 antivirus and it shows some basic details about my NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card (e.g., driver version 9.18.13.783 / 307.83 released 26-Feb-2013).

If you cannot patch your Vista SP2 OS to end of support (11-Apr-2023) with Dism++ as instructed in SIW2's 02-Oct-2021 post <here> and if wither 3 cannot provide you with a copy of SIW2's 32-bit Vista ISO (i.e., already slipstreamed with Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 plus all ~220 updates released before the end of Vista SP2 support), then at a very minimum I would manually install the nine standalone .msu installers listed in Dalai's Final Update List for Windows Vista that were released prior to end of support.***

*** For KB3124275 (Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 7/8/9: January 12, 2016 ) and KB4014661 (Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 9: April 11, 2017) choose the appropriate .msu installer for the IE version currently installed on your system; KB4014661 is not required for Internet Explorer 9 if you install the KB4018271 out-of-band emergaeny update listed below.
*** Note that Internet Explorer 7 is included with Vista System Pack 2 (rel. May 25, 2009).

Once Dalai's suggested updates are installed then install the following five out-of-band emergency security updates described in the Microsoft Answers forum topic More Shadow Brokers Exploits Patched June 2017 for Win XP and Vista that were released after the "official" end of support.

• KB4018271 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9: May 9, 2017) ***
• KB4018466 (Security Update for the Windows SMB Information Disclosure Vulnerability: May 9, 2017)
• KB4021903 (LNK Remote Code Execution Vulnerability: June 13, 2017)
• KB4024402 (Windows Search Vulnerabilities: June 13, 2017)
• KB4019204 (Security Update for the Windows Win32k Information Disclosure Vulnerability: May 9, 2017)

*** Only install KB4018271 if Internet Explorer 9 (the last version of IE released for Vista SP2) is installed

To install these .msu security updates:

1. Disable automatic Windows Updates [Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended)] and re-boot to terminate any Windows Update session currently running in the background. ***
2. Download the offline .msu installers from the Microsoft Update Catalog and save them to your Windows desktop. Use the Vista x86 installer if you have a 32-bit OS; use the Vista x64 installer if you have a 64-bit OS (see image below).
3. Double-click each .msu file on your desktop to start the installation. You do not need to restart your computer after each installer is finished unless you are prompted to do so.
4. Restart your computer.

*** IMPORTANT: Leave your automatic Windows Updates disabled. Microsoft deactivated the Windows Update servers on August 3, 2020 for computers with unsupported Windows operating systems like Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 that do not support SHA-2 code signing - see the Microsoft support article Windows Update SHA-1 Based Endpoints Discontinued for Older Windows Devices for more information. Running Windows Update on a Win XP or Vista machine after August 3, 2020 will now throw an error message, and running automatic background checks for Windows updates will only waste system resources and may cause other problems like slow system performance or system freezes.

As I have pointed pointed out several times before, Vista cannot be made secure in the present decade by installing security updates from previous decades. That’s why I have virtually no interest in these “How to update Vista without Windows Update” threads. Even if you “update” Vista, it’s not “updated” in any meaningful sense.

If your aim was to provide a short list of updates that could make Vista somewhat more useful, then where’s Platform Update? I’m sure I have posted a list of Platform Update KBs at this forum before, but I have no time to search today.

There was also one update pertaining to SHA-2 that might have some enduring value. I just mentioned it in August. Have we forgotten already?

James81 will have to confirm, but my understanding is that their main goal is to use their Acer Aspire M5641 to play some Vista-compatible games. I agree that patching the re-installed Vista SP2 OS on this computer to end of extended support does not mean that it could be used to safely browse the internet, but it might allow Jame81 to run some of their old games on this machine again.

Please post back with the KB number of your recommended Platform Update if you feel this an essential update that was not included in Dalai's list Final Update List for Windows Vista.
