Try to boot from that drive using a bootable cd such as windows vista, using which you can drill the issue down to a hardware or a software. If it boots then drive is fine, if not then the drive is gone.

You can also try this file. You have to save it to the desktop & then right click & merge.

Cool thnx for the info.

Here is the link to install the Drive firmware.

Make sure you remove any CD or DVD from the drive before installing this firmware update.

After extracting all the files to Desktop, run the file SFDNWIN3.27.11.exe

And then click on the left most button at the top of smaill firmware window and after selecting the firmware file that is: DE04.BIN
click on the second button from left to update the firmware.
Restart the computer after that update and issue should be fixed.

I get an error of "This firmware is not compatible with the selected drive". I have already deleted the filters and triple checked the drive model info. I have also deleted the drive through Device Manager and re-booted. I have also used the cdgone.reg to no joy. Any ideas?

I just joined the thread and had the same results as this user. I didn't see a fix for this problem--firmware not compatible.

Any ideas?

Have the same device and it plays audio Cd's fine but seemed to struggle to playback any DVD's - made a few crunching noises as though it was reading the disk but no joy. Having read the forums, I deleted the reg entries as directed and ( not sure if it had anything to do with that) but now some DVD's do play but others don't. Nothing to do with regions or anything like that - all original DVD's as well. Bit of a weird one - any help/advice appreciated. I'm on a Toshiba laptop

Hi, I think I have a similar problem to other people... i have a dell inspiron 6400 with vista home basic and when i try to play DVD's, the drive doesnt seem to recognise them at all, although CD's are fine. The drive is TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632D ATA Device. i tried downloading a diagnostic tool from dell, but it wouldnt download. Does anyone know what might be wrong/what i can do??

I had this problem. The filter workaround corrects the CD drive install issue. It will work fine after that in Windows. iTunes however does not. For iTunes cd burning you must add "GEARAspiWDM" for the UpperFilters. Correction, iTunes cd burning did work until I rebooted then Windows device manager went right back to "Device cannot start error code 10 etc.", so of course that breaks iTunes cd burning again. Anybody have any information/fixes for this?

I've tried iTunes repair/reinstall, update GEAR drivers, sfc /scannow, malware scan (ok), found no other conflicting burning software. Thanks

Oh I meant to add for those of you having other issues, if your drive will read but not burn cds or will read cds but not dvds, it's most likely just a faulty/bad CD/DVD drive.

Found it, windows\system32\drivers\afs.sys rename it to afs-.sys.

okay, here goes... I have the problem that everyone else is having with this cd rom. I have Toshiba Satellite A135 - yes it's old!! Running vista home basic sp2 32bit. I have recently installed iTunes. Now this cd rom is not working. I downloaded the cdgone.download, but have no idea how to merge it in the registry. Please share some wisdom!?!? :eek:
